Jessie, those of us who followed your AT hike know that you are a strong young lady and you have nothing to prove. Hike your own hike for as long and as far as you want.

It’s tough to see you being so sad. Loneliness depression is very real, and I hope you can break out of it soon. Best of luck on the trail.

You got this. Hang in there. Kinda surprised you didn't start with your Garmin. Seems like essential gear out there.

Oh man I drove 14 hours to the Timberline Trail to have to turn back because of snow and falling ice, hugs, I get it and we do stuff because we want adventure, sometimes we get spit out but it's still courageous and admirable to live your life how you want ❤

You had this on the AT, too. You still made it to Katahdin. You'll be fine. I live in Gallia County, Ohio, and my family is very good friends with the Gatewoods (Grandma Gatewood is from here). I follow AT, PCT, and CDT thru hikers and provide obnoxiously supportive comments.

Jessie, this is my first time following you. You are very young and hiking in snow is extremely hard. It will get better. There are others that are 1 day ahead of you and they, too, have had snow issues. They also said that hiking in the snow has made them a stronger hiker. You will miss your loved ones. You will continue to compare the AT to the PCT. However, you are going to survive and be very proud of yourself. Best of luck to you. You are strong…..you just don’t believe in yourself yet! Your followers do believe in you!

Do you think that (honey?) bee was a sign for you to keep on going? Anyway, do what you need to do regardless of what armchair viewers like me have to say. Thanks for sharing the raw emotions you're experiencing. It's so much more real than how most people portray their lives on social media. If it's any consolation, there are a lot of RU-vid viewers who wish you well and are rooting for you. Fly on, Honey Bee!

I started out at Harts Pass and went south to Stehekin; I actually bumped into you there on the bus and hanging out at the picnic tables at the lodge in Stehekin! You looked familiar, I thought maybe me or my hiking buddies knew you from the AT in 2022, as we hiked that year as well, but I just realized I recognized you from on here. I ended up getting off trail due to missing home and not having a great experience in the 4 days that I was out there (camped alone all 3 nights I was on trail) so I can totally relate to those early trail day blues. Looking forward to following your journey considering we would've been on similar timelines out there. Good Luck out there!

It's pretty nice when the snow and bugs are gone. There are usually more hikers to hang with the further south you go.

When you’re feeling better you will enjoy the trail more. Sore throat is classic altitude symptom. Go slow. Enjoy the moments. The west is really wonderful. Don’t fear those weather predictions. It’s different out here. The fronts pass quickly. Maybe as quick as 15-30 minutes bûtes. Don’t plan your whole day around them.

SOBO class of '16 here. Just be patient. The trail is the ultimate equalizer. It humbles everyone. The advantage of going SOBO is you will become much stronger and quicker than the NOBOs on the PCT. By the end of Washington, you're gonna be flying. I was just as emotional as you are in the beginning. I even had mice eat through my shirt pocket to get to a Justin's peanut butter wrapper. A dumb trail moment on my part. Additionally, I found that eating a hot meal for lunch helped be a lot. I was too tired to cook at night before bed for the first month. Anyway, be sure to fuel-up at the all-you-can eat buffet at the Timberline Lodge. You won't regret it.

@@phonemeunit1973 It does not humble everyone. Plenty of people use the trail to boost their ego, and it works.

I hope that you have found a solution since this was posted, but aquaphor makes your lips burn even more! It's like putting Vaseline on instead of sunscreen. Get you some good SPF Chapstick! That should help a ton!

You're doing great Jessie! Hang in there. The down days will pass, and the good days will increase, it's just all so new right now and you're trying to adapt to trail life in a totally different environment than you hiked in before. It will all come together, give it a chance. You might feel down but in the last two days, you've kicked everyone's ass who's sitting on the couch! I have faith in you, you got this! Your soul is telling you that you need this Jessie. The grief that you are feeling needs to come out of you. This grief has been in you since you were little, this hike is just helping to bring it out. The grief that you are feeling doesn’t really have to do with the people/pets that you miss, it has to do with what these people/pets help you do which is to suppress these grief based emotions. When you remove these people from your life temporarily through this hike you now don’t have them to help you to suppress these emotions anymore and therefore the grief will naturally come up and out if you let it. I assure you that you only have a finite amount of grief to feel so please don’t think it will be endless, it will not. Once you release all of the grief, it won’t matter where you are in the world or whether or not these people/pets are with you, you won’t feel sad about it because you will have released all the grief all ready. That won’t mean that you won’t still love and care for these people/pets but you will no longer have a “need” to be with them but rather a “desire” to be with them, which are two very different states. One is an addiction that helps you suppress your emotions and the other is a state of love, a desire to love them without getting anything in return, unconditional love in other words. So be brave and courageous my sister and allow yourself to feel these emotions, once felt, you will never have to feel them again. God bless you and keep you.
