Thank you! The reason I came here is to see if it used inside of a house and you answered that in the first sentence. I watched the city use the fusion method with their gas distribution. That requires some interesting, and good-size equipment but then they are working with larger pipes except where the branch to the houses. I learned they monitor leakage and they actually have quite a bit. When several areas within and area show too much leakage, they replace the entire neighborhood. In our case it was ~ 1 mile x 1/2 mile. We noticed that the grass in front of the corner house that was a yellow-green instead of green as a result of a fair amount of leakage of the main running in front of her house.

Great video! Full of useful info, and you have shown the ease of installation. Everyone needs to look at the different connections and installation methods available. I only install on my own houses and chose the permasert 2.0. The lyco is probably the best bet and I would use for a professional or commercial install, but it requires additional tools that cost. I would misplace them before my next install. If needed I would use any of the products you have shown. You should always check with the local inspector, some of them have their own preferences.

Enjoyed the video! I am going to extend the propane line from my water heater to my propane tank. Previous owner had built an enclosure (attached to my house) which house three 100 lb tanks. I’m not comfortable with those tanks being basically attached to my house. No code out where I live. Anyhow, I plan to relocate the tanks 100’ away. I like the idea of the polypropylene versus copper lines. I had a suggestion to run the line from where my water heater is located, through a raised floor in my house, and then the remainder buried to the new tank location. Can you tell me if this sounds feasible, and are there fittings that connection the PE directly to the water heater? Thanks for the help!

The fitting with the stiffener is home depot sold mostly. The stiffener doesn't fit all PE pipes, only the thick walled pipe which is the one sold by home depot. standard IPS wall thickness is not thick enough and the stiffener doesn't fit, it is too small and flops around. Because of this it is hard to get a tight seal and pass the gas pressure test.

@snoopdogie187
@snoopdogie187 2 года назад
You can't run PE under a house, and gas piping needs to enter the house above grade. Also you can't run metal pipe underground (at least shouldn't) This leaves you with entering above the slab, and running piping into the house, probably staying inside the walls to hide it, unless the laundry room is on an exterior wall. The one exception might be if you use copper pipe, but the cost!

Just an FYI, you have just taken on a lot of liability. Galvanized pipe is not allowed in the ground per the National Fuel Gas Code. States and municipalities can enhance National codes ,but no way are they allowed to reduce or limit the national code. I have worked in the gas industry for over 35 years an have submitted depositions when incidents occur; believe me this is something you do not want to continue to do.

@@wheelinndealin that would be me, I’ve been installing gas since 99 and I now run my own company. I’ve done side jobs ever since I was out on my own and never have I once had a call back for any type of gas line problem. I have never had an accident or anything even come close to one. I take pride in every single job that I do and wouldn’t do any work any way other then I would at my own house. Now I don’t know if you sir have personally used the home flex underground system or not , by your disapproval I’m willing to bet you haven’t because you would see what I’m talking about and the way the fittings seal to the pipe. Now I’m only talking about home flex, once you slide your pipe inside it the way it seals it is it has a seal that goes around the outside of your pipe when you take it down and smashes that seal to the outside of the pipe. So it doesn’t matter what kind of material you put in that fitting if it’s IPS size it has the same or diameter it’s going to seal it. I would much rather trust a piece of steel over a piece of plastic myself. The other style with the compression and the Stab fittings Are a whole Nother ball game.Those other types are good for small jobs they are quick but stab fittings are priced ridiculous. I had a 2 inch T A few months back and it was damn near $500 The PE fusion tee in 2” was only 10 dollars. I shelled out and bought a fusion iron and that’s all I use now. I still do not buy the risers tho. They are way over priced. I just use a fusion 90 and a transition piece Which is perfectly legal.
@boby115
@boby115 5 лет назад
There is actually three types of fittings for the PE gas pipe ( compression, constab and lyco fittings). Having worked for the gas utility in Saint Louis Missouri for 35 years I can tell you I have seen PE couplings come and go over the years. In my opinion you will find a no better fitting than the lyco coupling. The particular coupling you show in the video has something called a stiffeners one of the most important things to install with these type of couplings. Being that the stiffener is one of the most important parts, I'am not sure why this manufacturer would not have it permanently sealed inside the compression coupling like all the other a manufacturers of compression type couplings. I have seen a house blown up and leveled to the ground because someone forgot to install the stiffener. I was not aware of any manufacturer that still had separate stiffeners( just surprised they don't know better). If you goggle lyco fittings you will understand why I feel it is the best PE coupling in the business no one else comes close. PS, thank you for your videos, a very good source of information and education.

Bob. Looking to run NG in the ground. Have 3/4 PE for the run, but need to transition from threaded black pipe to the PE. Used Swagelok years ago for a similar run but they are so darned expensive. Would the Lyall #341051050800 do the same thing?
@boby115
@boby115 4 года назад
@@davidb8596 , just need 2 risers to transition you from polyethylene to threaded pipe and two couplings. At the gas meter you will probably need a shut off valve ,tee for pressure test & insulated Union for cathodic protection of the riser. Don't use this junk ,call Lyall or Continental (2 of the better brands,lyco fit being the better one but you will need a special tool). Don't forget to call the gas company about the added load and they may need to upgrade the gas meter (?) If so ask them to leave you a drop for your riser. There is usually no cost for this depending on your gas company.

@davidb8596
@davidb8596 4 года назад
@@boby115 This is a simple connection. Replacing back patio and planning for a NG firepit the will sit (not built in) on the patio. Around the corner from the patio, there is capped black pipe protruding from the brick exterior wall that the original owners (who had built) had included in their customizing the construction. My guess is they had it run should they want a hot tub. Nonetheless, the NG source is the house system. As a result, I am looking at a 12 foot run (not including depth to bury) and dont have to mess with the meter. My plan is to uncap, add valve, 90 down, nipple, 90 to horizontal, nipple, compression/transition coupling, PE for the run, another coupling, then black pipe out of the ground where the fire pit will sit so its concealed. My issue is finding an appropriate compression connect to transition from pipe to PE and reverse at the run end. I dont want these "shark bite" or plastic couplings. The other couplings I have found are ones that are part of a "system". Item details often say that their coupling only works with their fittings and PE so I want to avoid that. Just looking for an ole fashion transition coupling that will accommodate black pipe (threaded or compression) in and PE compression out.
@boby115
@boby115 4 года назад
@@davidb8596 , you don't want to put black Iron in the ground. I would use a 5/8" L Soft copper , connect underground from a 5/8 to 3/4 polyethylene Continental coupling ( copper to plastic). Come within about eight feet of the fire pit and go back to Copper. So in the end it should look like black nipple coming out of your brick wall, elbow facing down, shut off valve, Tee for pressure tap, flare adapter, flare nut on copper, copper pigtail running into your Trench, copper to PE coupling, PE pipe installed in 18" deep Trench, convert back to copper about eight feet away from the pit & make all needed flare connections. If it's less than 50 feet I would run it in all 3/4" L soft copper & no connections would be below ground. Disclaimer, this is approved in my area. This should always be done by a licensed professional and you still want to contact the gas company about load and their requirement for this type of installation. The gas company should be there to help and consult you on the proper method of installation they require ( in most cases there is no charge for this). Also note : some states and municipalities do not allow copper in the ground. Uncoated black iron pipe is prohibited nationally from being installed in the ground. Do your due diligence and good luck.
