Aww Stacey, that's not burnt. We call that 'caramellised' in our house, lol. I bought bacon bones yesterday and I put in grated carrot, swede, turnip and potato and chopped onion. No pressure cooker here, just a pot on the stove. Yummo. A reminder to never salt your dried pea mixture until it's cooked. Otherwise they never soften.

Stacey, I made a much better job than you did in burning soup!! 😀 Instead of brown stuck on the base, mine was black! The burnt taste had gone right through, so it was dumped. I was so looking forward to it! When my boys were all at home, when bacon hocks were so cheap, compared to now, that was a favorite for us all. I owned the same crockpot from 1988 till 3 yrs ago. The cord was getting dangerously frayed, so I retired it. Had loved walking in from work each day, knowing that dinner was ready. Hope the onions do well Stacy. 👩‍🌾 👩‍💻Yes, this cold snap is a doozy. Friends down near Oxford/Cusp, got heavy snow 3 days ago. So looking forward to spring. Driving about yesterday and seeing the poor wee newborn lambs snuggling up to their Mums trying to get warm nearly had me teary. Dear wee mites.🐑🐑 Thank you for all of your hard work each video Stacey. Much appreciated here. 🤗 💌

Anyone who’s ever cooked long-term short term new to the craft whatever, has done this exact same thing. What I appreciate with you is that you didn’t hide it. We’re all gonna do it probably more than once and be mad and frustrated, but you just have to salvage what you can and move on. I appreciate you showing that. Split peas and ham are the best.

Stacey I felt your pain re the soup. You can still return it as under the CGA a product should be fit for purpose and you’ve had issues with slow cooking and pressure cooking. Cooking the soup for a second time wouldn’t make a difference. And nobody can call you an inexperienced cook. It hasn’t met your expectations and you’re entitled to a refund. It wasn’t a cheap Kmart multi cooker. Good luck. xx

Pea and ham is my favourite soup. I love it with a bit of texture - chunky carrots and bits of ham. We usually freeze our Christmas ham bone with a good bit of the meat left on, just for an autumn batch of soup. Other times I buy smoked ham hocks which give a great flavour. We are about to have pasta bake and salad for dinner - now I wish we were having pea and ham soup with crusty bread 😊

Hi Stacey, love love love split pea soup. When I make it in the instant pot, other than onions celery and carrots, it calls for 2 cups split peas and 6 to 8 cups chicken broth with a high pressure cook 18 minutes with a natural release. What I have been doing play the last few years is pressure canning it using the recipe in the Ball book of canning. Hang in there, don't get frustrated.

Sadly here in Australia 🇦🇺 ham hocks and/ or bones have shot up in price. My all time favourite soup is yellow split pea and ham soup, yummy. I grate my carrots and onion. My secret ingredient is one grated potato 😂 a few of my friends could never replicate the texture of my soup and all loved it, I never used measurements or garlic, just chucked in pot by eye and always turned out great. Isn't it strange that lots of men don't consider soup as a meal? Soup and crusty bread or tosst yum, I could eat it most nights👍🇦🇺💜

People who say "x is not a meal", just means that its not a complete meal. With some good hearty bread a nice thick soup can be just the ticket, particularly on a cold day. I can understand that a thin watery soup might not be enough for most people. But a nice, thick, hearty soup with bread? Delish!

Stacey, I also enjoy soup and hubby is not keen on split pea. I pressure can it for instant meals. Split pea would not be the best choice for the instant pot as you made it. I would have put the bacon bones in with water to make stock for about an hour, pulled out the bones and added peas, onion etc and preassure cook on low 10 min. Let pressure come down on its' own and then simmered or slow cooked it, if any additional cooking was needed. Simmer gets quite hot and will require stirring often. Starch on the bottom will burn easy. When I put a roast in, iI put onion on bottom, browned roast carrots arount roast and taters on top. Hope this helps, there is a learning curve with them! I do love my electric pressure cookers.

Stacey, your soup looks very tasty, I only made Pea and Ham soup yesterday. I cook mine on the top of the stove in a large stock pot, I had a large Ham hock in the freezer which I used along with yellow split peas.I also add lots of carrot, parsnip, turnip, onion celery, potato and green peas, just the thing on these cold winter days. It is so good seeing how someone makes theirs, thank you for sharing.

I have a Baccarat Multi cooker The only time I burnt anything was when I didn’t follow the recommendation You have to have liquids without the thickeners I think yours burnt because you added more peas , the extra half n hour meant the first lot of peas were cooked and thick as they do and settle on the bottom When cooking, just do all peas at once with veg and celery and ham hock My multi cook on pressure would only be 30 minutes I turn off power and let it sit, then after ten minutes open valve , no awkward amount of steam comes out , and then take off lid If it needs more, then ten minutes on Vegetable pressure and done like a dogs dinner 😅 Hope that helps , you will Love 💗 your pressure cooker if you know not to let things that congeal sit on the bottom 😊🇦🇺🌸

I make bacon hock soup, pretty much the same as your good self, 'cept, along with the meat, onion, garlic and soup mixes, "I throw in" 2 - 3 thickly sliced potatoes, (right from the offset), add 4 beef oxo cubes, a generous splash of Lee and Perrins, then, after slow cooking for 6 hours, place freshly made dumplins, (like my Ol' Mum used to make, back in the late 50s and 60s. Bless 'er) on the surface, replace the lid, then cook for another 30 minutes. Thickens more, and tastes even better, the following day. Enjoying your content.
