Peabody's Improbable History: The Pony Express 

I remember as a little girl in history class learning about the Pony Express. They fell out of favor when Samuel Morse invented the telegraph (the direct forerunner of the telephone and, later, email) and telegraph wires crossed the nation. As someone stated, "The pony was fast, but it couldn't compete with the lightning".

Why would Mr. Wells tried to prevent Peabody and Sherman from completing the message?
