At Peachtree Hearing we offer a video-otoscopic examination of your ear. We use an otoscope with a tiny video camera that transmits a bright light into the ear canal and relays the image to a monitor for you to see. This technology allows both you and your audiologist to clearly visualize the inside of your ear canal to properly diagnose issues affecting comfort and hearing. Dr. Wikoff is an expert in techniques used to comfortably remove foreign bodies or alleviate the buildup of excessive cerumen (earwax) or other foreign bodies.
Ear wax is a normal and healthy thing for our ears. Most people have a normal amount of ear wax, and the ear wax drains out of the ears by itself. Some people have too much ear wax and/or their ear wax does not drain properly, which means they can often end up with ear wax buildup deep down in the ear canal. Audiologists have different ways of removing wax based on the size of your ear canal and the location, size, and consistency the wax or other foreign bodies needing to be removed. Often times Dr. Wikoff will use what's called a currette first. A currette is a small device with a scoop at the end that is used to gently scoop the ear wax out of the ear canal. It is used in conjunction with a microscope to help us clearly see inside the ear. Other times Dr. Wikoff may use suction if necessary or even flush or irrigate the ear with water. Remember that you should never try to stick anything inside of your ear canal at home. You could force something further into the ear canal or worse damage your ear drum.
