@fakestreetspirit

Since starting painting again, the biggest lesson I have learned is to ask "Am I happy?"; supportive online communities, podcasts (very much yours), socials, also help exercise my critical thinking skills with regards to ability, result or potential. I am making slow progress - perhaps most importantly in terms of self-analysis/worth and knowing that I don't need to be put off by amazing painters online. Incremental gains ...

was enjoying peachy on the painting phase, since he left it's not really got the same appeal though I hope Pat and Geoff do well! my only concern is now peachy isnt doing the podcast interviews anymore which were really enjoyable. understandably if peach doesnt like it then thats his choice but he carried the show for painting phase imo

Much respect. I get pissed at the "single model" painters a lot because its not that applicable to "army" painting which is what more of us are really doing. The skills need to be transferable. Paint the army and yes paint "heroes" to a higher level -if- you want to but they are very different things.

I am with James on using a power tool for drilling barrels. The lower RPM setting is very helpful as is the trigger control. Also mine can rest on it's battery giving me a stable base to work from. I guess the bottom line is, it depends on what kind of powered drill you have if it's gonna be useful for drilling out barrels and such.

Mr. Peach is the man! I think the best content is not just about painting, but also about hanging with your virtual buds and chilling out while we sit in our hobby rooms and paint up some minis. It's just fun to kind of hang with Peachy while he paints and chats about stuff.

I think clear bases have a place. I have a dark eldar army; mostly flying stuff hellions and venoms which are mounted on GWs clear flight stands; so I decided to base all other foot troops on clear bases to match. I enjoy that clear bases is kinda part of their theme… Hobby hack, when super gluing to clear bases, after it’s dry, you can push back any light frosting with a wooden tooth pick, it’s softer than the acrylic so doesn’t scratch it.
@dafruk1
@dafruk1 6 месяцев назад
100% agree on the electric drill and trigger control means there is no issue of destroying your mini and its so much faster. Doing non GW games you also need to pin metals more regularly and its a godsend for getting through harder materials.

To add to the masking tape thing. I know it's kind of weird to mention it, but if you see pictures of Star Trek The Next Generation models, you can see that the small details like lifeboats and some patterns are done all with masking tape. It's one of those corner cutting techniques to get the models done on schedule and they still looked great. Doesn't hold up to the test of time since they're peeling at all these auctions since they didn't need to put any finish on these things like Peachy would for the capes and sexy boots. :D

Great video again guys. I think the perfection pursued by content creators is responsible for a lot of anxiety and dissatisfaction among less serious painters. A really good approach is to show the 'imperfect' model in the zoom shots but then show the same models in broader pan shots to show how little it matters on the tabletop. Another thing that I think needs more youtube coverage is 'staged' painting. A video that takes a tabletop standard paint job on a unit and then make a video showing adding additional highlights and blends to take the models to the next level. I think a lot of people don't even get that this is a valid option and even a good one.

⚫️The base should be black, because your brain needs a place to stop seeing an object, that is not too close to the environment. Therefore, pictures are also put in a frame that separates the picture from the wall. It was also why the Taj Mahal got 4 smaller pillars after the wonder was completed. When it was found that your eye wanders when it does not find an end on an object. So that's why they put a pillar in each corner to frame the Taj Mahal. The columns in white, against the blue sky background, great contrast. Therefore, your base must have a large contrast between the figure and the playing surface.

The best part of painting an army, 40 or 50 minis at the time, for me, is devising my system. For example, I’ve got my base colors picked, but the shirt colors and weapon accents all have alternative colors I can use. Also, once I’m done basecoating, before I add my wash, I do a few freehand checkers and a few dags on each model. So with my system, I’ll likely be done with the army after 12 hours or so of dedicated painting. Fun!
@cabe_bedlam

Regarding vehicles and tanks on bases - For my playgroup we houserule that a destroyed vehicle is turned upside down (where possible) and then becomes a piece of battlefield debris, a base would make that somewhat tricky.

Could not agree more. As a parent with a full time job and a long commute, I get about 90 minutes every two weeks to paint, so the quality has to be sacrificed, and speedpaints and contrast have become mandatory. I can always come back later to make them better, but what I don't want are any models not even primed.

I love the comment about not following the box color scheme. I'm the same way, and as a result I've never felt bad about my models not looking like the box art. It gives you the freedom to come up with your own color scheme and try new things without having that voice in your head telling you "It's not as good as the box..."

I spent years struggling to finish stuff, chasing perfection. Leading to a lot part finished models. Then I saw a Vince Venturella video about understand why you are painting. I accepted I want decent looking tabletop, since then I have finished atleast an army a year and number is increasing each year. Thing is as I am now painting more my brush control has improved, and general quality has improved. I still would say its above tabletop but its getting to a higher end. Plus I am now more inclined to just try techniques and new stuff.

Yes Peachy! the bulk of my armies are equal to Siege studios Bronze level painting, that to me is my battle ready standard. Crisp but not 4 layers of hightligt, not much blending and not every single detail given hours of time. I do spend hours on my characters, or my Knights that i have been painting up to i don't know, sick ammount of detail. But i always start out doing every model GW battle ready, using batch painting to get to that level. Just to get my army painted. I used to spend hours on every single model in a unit, before moving on to the next, and in the end i got painting fatigue, looking at my unpainted minis and seing that i had made zero progress while spending hours on individual models. So batch or army painting was the thing that gave me the motivation to keep painting, like reaching milestones. Seeing an army in colors other than plasic grey, and then after a game or few, going back to add the next level of painting to them, over and over.

Barrels. An electric hand-drill can be about £20 to £40 and you can also put cutters, sanders, etc. on it. If all you do is drill a few barrels, perhaps not worth it. If you do TONS of kitbashing and pinning, and barrel drilling, and sanding, it starts to become an investment.

10/10 before I got into the hobby I was asked to drill a 3mm hole in a knight model so it could be magnetised, I used a 3mm wood drill bit in a dewalt drill and just went at it, only to be told afterwards that the model was £110, glad that came out right and it was perfect center SHHEEEEEESHHH!!!!

So for James's defense, as a blue collar worker (Electrician) Drills and Impacts can have their speed controlled via the trigger...you can always tell a veteran worker vs a greenhorn is how well they can control the speed of their power tool....Still a bit of overkill for drilling barrels out though...

Something to keep in mind with drilling your barrel is that you don't have to drill it very far. Even a little 0.5mm indent is enough to give the impression if you put some black paint in it.

Lots of novice painters are quite insecure about their paint jobs in the LGS. They are hyped that it's painted or whatnot but hesitant to show it off, or they try to make excuses for it as you are looking at it. This is the type of person that needs more content made for them. They need to see the mistakes and lower standard of paint jobs that Peachy presents. It gives those people confidence to get better.

Yep I must say I'd very much like to see some Napoleonic, Blackpowder Imperial guard mash up content. Right up my street. Though I'd encourage (that is if Peach reads the comments) maybe looking more towards mid 19th century wars as well, so Crimean War, Franco-Prussian war, ACW etc. Still very much Napoleonic in a number of ways but with better tech. Perry's also has a reasonably new Franco-Prussian range too.

Regarding letting more experienced painters define your own belief and comparisons between your work and theirs... I almost lost my mind since Legions Imperialis released because there are some frankly fething amazing artists out there doing things at 8mm I daren't even dream possible, especially with my eyes not being what they once where.... and I had to take a step back and really tell myself, as long as mine are painted well to a battle ready standard and look good in the game, that's good enough.

The tanks on bases thing is tough. I put an ork trukk on one of the newer buggy bases and it really set it off. But a rhino would look wierd. I think it has a lot to do with negative space on a model, and how much detail you can fit around it.

We love you, Peach! As an adult who was recently diagnosed with ADHD, I feel I have a strong radar for it, and you have pinged said radar more than a few times 😁 "I don't know what an HD is but the doctor says I got eighty-eight of them!" It is a bit confusing because other hobbyists with ADHD might talk about how hard it is to focus on painting, but we all know that when an ADHD brain gets focused on something it gets *hyperfocused*. Painting minis ticks so many boxes for me that it's like instant hyperfocus. Now, that focus can pop from model to model (oftentimes when I'm dead in the middle of doing a different one) but in general those beautiful toy soldiers tickle my brain so good I can't stop. And looking at a finished squad brings such a nice feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment!
