Ian is fast becoming the best content creator for Warhammer 40k on this hell site. So much more easy to listen to and 'real' than the likes of Majorkill and Weshammer, who seem to care more about controversy or clickbait than they do actually talking about the hobby. Ian's like the bloke you'd meet by the paints in your local Warhammer shop and get chatting to.

I like Ian a lot and can see why Major might be a turnoff, but what’s so controversial about Weshammer? I feel like his content’s been great and that he’s transitioned from doing short tiltoks to longform stuff pretty well.

Request for you: Seeing how Ian stated that doing painting videos is bad for his channel and how relatable I find much of what he said, I'd love to see you host an episode where Ian gets to demonstrate some of his experimental techniques; with you then pointing out 'easy wins' for bringing the paint job to the next level. 🙏

It's not just me!!! I love the building and cleaning. I.. tolerate.. painting, but am super happy with the result. So it's like I have to force myself through the painting process, I spend a long time painting as try to come up with some really unique ideas with my models. But damn does it stretch out the process. But the result I really savour. And the motivation to make an army that doesn't look like anyone else's I vibe with. All my aspect warriors are colour swapped with other paths. My Dark Reapers have a Banshee scheme, my Banshee's have a Dire Avengers scheme, my Striking Scorpions have a Dark Reaper scheme. And I really like the results.

What I love about Ian's take, as he explains, is that he approaches the lore like a creative exercise, which feels more laidback, nuanced, and honestly deeper.

Part of the magic of fantasy and scifi, starting with Tolkien of course, is the way it tickles our imaginations. This is especially so when things are left mysterious. Warhammer in general, by design or sheet incompetence, has tons of these little mysterious corners of the lore. The fact that you an go and then make a tangible thing with such a fictional nugget and then *play a game with it* is the magic of Warhammer.

Green stuff construction hack highly recommended here too. And oddly I discovered it in much the same way as Ian, while building 2nd ed space marines. Metal marines, plastic arms, gave a little bit more play to position for holding boltguns and held quickly and the arms very rarely fell off (usually from an accidental drop). Nice to hear an old school hack still doing the rounds 😊

Does it work with liquid green stuff, I wonder? I've sworn off kneadatite for a while since I got the liquid stuff as it's so much more convenient.

The tip at the end is life altering. I love the old metal Rackham models but always have issues gluing the metal parts together (I usually drill and pin as well as glue. Ian’s wisdom of using a tiny bit of green stuff plus glue for attaching metal parts is genius. Thank you!

I’m a big fan of the greenstuff superglue combo too. I found it by accident when assembling something that needed a gap filling and decided to do it from the inside and press it out.

Something they said on here about putting people into different painting circumstances and trying techniques gave me an idea: something like the great British bake-off or other cooking show but for models. Each week trying a different technique.

I love Ians channel because its obvious he knows the lore inside and out, which is how he's able to summarize it so concisely. And then, the best bits, he tells you the history of the lore so newer folks like me can have a bit of a frame of reference for when the old guys down at the FLGS get to telling their war(hammer) stories.

Drilling competition - I bought a similar pin vice to George. To stop the terrible noise and allow it to work better, get a very small amount of olive oil (I used olive oil as it doesn’t have a smell). This lubricates the moving parts and works better, however, I also have been using a cordless drill for the last couple of years.

Honestly love that combination or those two and Ian. The green stuff hint is amazing, I've been doing it for as long but started with bluetac and moved onto gs. It really works, as good if not better than pinning, and as he said helps hold the price together as you're working on it

19:07 I really recognize this in myself. I never finished my first army and for my second one I had a plan to do it relatively fast just to play and not every single small grunt needs to be 100% perfec. The thing is if you re-do and endlessy try to get something perfect on one single model, you lose the feeling. It becomes a struggle and when you look at the unit afterwards you only remember the fighting it took you to get it done. Now I've noticed that if you just dont stop the flow and get stuff done, you feel better at just watching units grow and grow. The paintjob is like a skijumper telemark, just land it in one go.

I've been stepping out of my comfort zone recently and trying new techniques for painting. I've found that using a skirmish unit/team/etc. to try new techniques. That way i can play around with things like NMM and only am "committed" to a few figures.

I thought a discussion on motivation while you paint a project might be one to explore. My roller coaster is. High when I have the idea, high when I get the test model, high when I can replicate the test model a couple times. Lows come when I start batch painting to get the rest done and they stay unfinished as a group for a while. I bring the highs back in by focusing on a model at a time to completion. Final high is looking at the squad together. I live a wild life I know!
