That's all fine & dandy and I always appreciate your videos Marion but for me, what makes good DEF is the purity of the ingredients and nothing else. Impurities will screw up your expensive SCR system before much else. I did remove my '19s system at 22k miles for reasons that won't be discussed here. I had run the cheap Walmart supertech DEF since day 1 pretty much. When I looked down that SCR right at the injector, I was pleased to see it looked brand new! No deposits, no discoloration...nothing! It looked like a brand new unit. I also ran supertech in my '15 ecodiesel for 60k miles without a single problem. I don't pay attention to date codes, I buy 4 jugs at a time when I need it and I'm convinced after what I saw in that SCR that supertech is as good or maybe even better than the expensive brand names. It's always fresh because the price is right. Anything that the aftermarket can exploit an extra $ out of they definitely will and DEF is one of those things. Oh and 1 more thing! I also removed my intake horn at 25k miles when I replaced the awful CP4 with a 3 and the soot in the horn and around the grid heater was minimal. So my EGR wasn't doing scary damage. I didn't even clean them before reinstalling since soot was so minimal. Anyways good day buddy.

It would be nice if you get a class eight fleet manager to run a 100k mile test on trucks fresh out of the factory. One truck batch uses whatever the drivers get from the service pump, another batch use plain Blue DEF and the third batch uses the Platinum. I think 100k miles per truck would yield discernible results but would likely require opening the SCR box for inspection to get a full sense of differences if any.

Thank you for all the research Marion. I have a 2019 Ram 2500 and it does not use that much DEF, unless i have to use Bio Diesel. I use Blue DEF, but occasionally use the DEF at the truck stops. So far, no issues that i see. Has i watch your video's i change what I look at on my CTS 3, so thank you for that!!! I do tow my Travel trailer allot and never see it do a regen while towing ( have a CTS 3). I am told this is normal, due to the EGT's burning off the soot? Seems to make sense. I really appreciate the information you provide on your videos. I hear allot "off the cuff" statements without . Your explanations are top notch in my book!!! Great data, since my truck is not a daily driver anymore and I use it almost 99.9% of the time to pull our Fifth wheel...the only time a I see a regen is when the timer says its time to check the regen function. I'm always low on the soot when the regen starts. So I don't think it would reduce the regen count in my case. Excellent info and discussion as usual. Also, I've been buying my DEF from the truck stops since I go there sometimes when traveling with the RV.

DEF story that may not be applicable except for what the mechanics told me after the DEF pump was replaced. My 2016 w/ 120,000 miles on its second 2.5 gal of Platinum DEF. Got a code for a DEF pump back pressure error the day before an extended road trip Arkansas to N Idaho and back. Truck still ran and I could not delay my departure. I had topped off the DEF with the 2nd 2.5G Platinum about a week earlier. Got to Idaho and DEF level showed some DEF usage. The repair showed the injector nozzle and hose were not plugged but the pump had failed. It stopped pumping the near the end of my trip out. Mechanic said I should not use the Platinum. I have always used fresh Blue DEF. The tank level has been misreading for quite awhile. I tend to keep the tank topped off. He told me to stop that and keep tank between 1/4 and 3/4 levels. On the Platinum the highway long driving resulted in a MUCH longer interval between Regens and a very short interval on city driving. Don’t know if what he said about the Platinum was true, but the DEF pump should not have failed so early. Keep up the good work. Glad your wife is going to be OK. I lost mine unexpectedly and suddenly when she was quite young. Undetermined cause. Good for you guys - enjoy your life together.

I think that mechanic is full of it, plenty of people are using Peak Blue DEF Platinum without any issues including myself and I have been using Blue DEF Platinum since they released it. I ran regular Blue DEF the first 10,000 miles before Peak released the Blue DEF Platinum and when I pulled the DEF injector at the first oil change at 10,000 miles the mounting port on the SCR chamber and the DEF injector were both clogged up with white crystalized DEF with just a small hole where the injector was spraying the DEF through the white crystalized DEF. I changed over to Peak Blue DEF Platinum at the 10,000 mile oil change so the first fill of Peak Blue DEF Platinum was diluted with a 60% Platinum and 40% regular DEF. Peak tells you that when diluted with regular DEF it does not work as well. When I pulled the DEF injector at the 20,000 mile oil change the mounting port had white crystalized DEF build up, not as bad as the 10,000 mile check and the DEF injector had white crystalized build up again not quite as bad as the 10,000 mile check. By 20,000 miles I had 100% Peak Blue DEF Platinum in the DEF tank and when I pulled the DEF injector at the 30,000 mile oil change the mounting port had just a thin film on it not white crystalized DEF and the injector has a thin film on it as well and it cleans right off. At the 40,000 mile oil change I again pulled the DEF injector and the mounting port was clean with no build up on it at all and the DEF injector had a thin film that wiped right off on it. Peak Blue DEF Platinum meets the ISO standard for DEF and I have used it now for 30,000 miles in my Ram 1500 Ecodiesel without issues. I hear a lot of mechanics try to steer people away from Peak Blue DEF Platinum, not because it is causing any problems but because it takes away sales from the dealer/shop for their over priced regular Blue DEF. I see the price of MOPAR brand DEF fluid from $15.99 a gallon and up to $24.99 for a 2 1/2 gallon jug so the Peak Blue DEF Platinum at $22.99 for 2 1/2 gallons is really a good deal and it provides the benefit of helping to keep your DEF system clean. Think of it this way, many people use HotShot fuel additive and following the directions you either use 1 ounce or 2 ounces for every 20 gallons of fuel, I suspect the additive that Peak is using is similar in the amount which would not alter the percentage of water/Urea it is such a small amount but it clearly provides a benefit to keeping the DEF injector and SCR chamber clean of white crystalized deposits.

Miles per frequency of refill would be good to know. I saw another channel talking about his Ford recalculating the distance he could go per tank of DEF. He drives lots of highway miles and keeps good records from what he reports. His Ford was reporting 10k miles per DEF tank with regular DEF, but the computer adjusted that to 12k miles once he started using Platinum. So if that is to be believed one would have to conclude something is going on. The new Ram's appear to be using a lot more DEF, but less EGR from what I gather so people are kind of disappointed in the DEF consumption. Just received my truck and have not topped off the DEF yet or the fuel tank yet. But I think I will try running the Platinum and see what it does. It would be a big bonus if it actually does use less DEF and keeps the SCR system cleaner. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the rest of your findings.

@@Jon-O. My Ecodisel is a 2019 with the second generation ecodiesel, the 2020 and newer Ram uses the third generation ecodiesel. The only thing done to my ecodiesel was the dealer did the egr recall before I bought the truck. My ecodiesel was a left over 2019 that I bought new in 2020, the truck sat on the dealers lot for 10 months before I bought it. I did purchase the Green Diesel Engineering EPA compliant tune and the transmission tune and installed them at the 1,800 mile mark on the odometer. @Jon-O.
@Jon-O. 2 года назад
@@ramecodiesel8271 omgosh you replied to me so cool. Yeah I have a 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins 6speed manual. The soot generation is terrible. My suggestion for your oil filter is use the Amsoil synthetic media filter it's a true 20 micron rated full flow oil filter where the mopar oil filter is not and is paper cellulose media. Redline is good stuff. I used rotella T6 5w40 from the day I brought her home brand new then switched to Amsoil at 60k mile mark. Wow what a difference it runs quieter and I get 1 1/2 mpg more. No other oil ever did that. Kinda regretting I didn't switch sooner now. I use Power Service fuel maintenance products Biocide and diesel clear twice a year when I do it's two tank fills and use the diesel kleen fuel treatment becaus they can be used together. Then I switch back to Amsoil fuel treatment for diesel because in winter it resists freeze up better and pours better. I also noticed a bump in mileage with Amsoil diesel fuel treatment about 1/3 mpg. I've been putting off installing the metered 2 micron oil bypass filtration system on it because I don't want my extended warranty voided. If they only understood it doesn't rob oil pressure from the crank pistons or cam. And It removes 80 - 90% of the soot and carbon the full flow can't. The worst wear caused in Engines is by particles from four to ten microns in size none of which are filtered out by full flow oil filters because they can only filter down to 40 to 20 microns based on the media it's made of at 99% rating. The egr is packing soot in the intake which is the culprit for the heater grid bolt engine failure. Which is why I want to switch to Gail Banks intake horn because his intake heater in the horn doesn't fail and can be easily removed for cleaning if needed and air flow is completely uninterrupted and increased with his Intake horn. Also you ready for this my 8400 lb truck averages 19 to 20 mpg city driving and 24 on the highway that's insane but I have to take it on highway runs to force full regens of the DPF filter or my mpg's drop by 30% or more. Also I've gone to bone yards looking for dpf filters to wrench off and they are all gone before the vehicle gets to the yards. I'm trying to have a spare that's clean I can just switch out then do a cleaning process of the one I take off my vehicle like they do with semi dpf filters.

Marion, good data here given the circumstances on how difficult this comparison is without a proper lab. That is a ton of low idling, which I understand is bad for our modern diesels. Ever consider doing the high idling trick by setting cruise control on and adjusting with the +/- buttons? Also, I wonder if high idle would not be a more better baseline as it simulates engine in "working" condition? I know I know, the diesel cost would go up significantly with this type of test. lol

DEF has nothing to do with regens. The best you can hope for with the Platinum is leaving little to no crystal deposit that can clog the injector and throw a CEL. Eventually limit your speed. Easiest enough to clean though and get back on the road, and save money.

I am having to make the switch from Valvoline DEF to something different due to a supplier change and I am heavily considering going to the platinum instead of regular peak. On average I get 600 miles per gallon of DEF out of my 2022 Ram 2500 Mega Cab Big Horn. It is lifted 4” 22x12s 35x12.50 tires that ARE NOT LIGHT. I drive right at 56 miles round trip a day basically all interstate 70MPH and during regen with the valvoline def I would loose 1mpg. My dash shows me on average 16.1-17.1 MPG when I had calculate my fuel it averages about 14.5-15MPG real world in WV. I’m doing my best to maintain the EGR and exhaust and use quality fluids. It will soon go through a weight loss program as soon as the software is released for the 22s. I’m not brave enough to pull an ECM out of a 19-21 so I’m just patiently waiting. Great video! The data seems solid as you seem to have put a lot of thought into controlling variables to extent possible and reasonable. Agree with some of the other commentary, it seems like mileage between regens is the number one takeaway for me on this comparison. The greater the mileage in between regens the better, in my opinion. I’ve been using the platinum in my 6.7 Cummins for a few months and platinum seems worth the extra few bucks especially with how long the DEF seems to last. After watching a few other videos on platinum vs regular comparisons, I think your comparison is superior to some of the others out there. Thanks for sharing your data with the public!

I have an '18 Ram 3500 Cummins HO for pulling a 42' 5th wheel. It has 95k miles, I bought iI used in '20. I live up north, so temps degrading my DEF is only an issue from July- September. I try to keep my DEF tank level low in summer, to minimize effects of heat degradation. I don't drive it a lot of miles per year, 10k or less. I'm interested in operating cost. I fill DEF from a pump, when I can find it. Otherwise I use Walmart private label DEF. Comparing 2 premium priced products is not that useful to me, unless you can show that using them will save $ somehow through emissions system or other issue compared to commodity DEF. You seem enjoy this comparison, so I am happy for you. Unfortunately it's not that valuable for me. I have gained the most from some of your maintenance videos that are applicable to shade tree mechanics like me.

@@CrotchetRocket I bought the parts and installed them myself. The #1 thing you will need is a race tuner to upload a tune to your truck's computer that will trick it's computer into believing that the oxygen and NOS sensors, etc on the now missing exhaust pipe are still there so it won't put your truck in 'limp mode'. I replaced the entire exhaust pipe, from the header, back with, basically a straight pipe (aftermarket exhaust). Optionally, I also 'deleted' the EGR so my engine would last longer. I ended up getting better fuel mileage, too. The tuner I use is a 'mini maxx' made by H&S Performance. If you want to pay someone to install the stuff, ask at places that install performance parts on diesel trucks. I don't know if they can legally do it. I'm in the Houston area and have never had a problem renewing my state inspection sticker. But make sure you keep the original parts. It is illegal to sell the truck without the original emission stuff on it. You can at least give the parts to the new owner. FYI, once a 'tune' has been uploaded to the truck's computer, I remove the tuner from the truck and keep it at home, in a safe place, to extend it's life and prevent it from getting damaged or stolen. But it would be useless to a thief because it will only work for the truck it's been paired with. The DEF tank, I just left on the truck, empty. My truck is a 2011 F350.

@@Texas3Percenter Dude legit I appreciate the response and your knowledge. I have a 2015 BMW X5 in diesel, and after what you said I think I’ll get her stripped down and dressed up myself haha. Good advice on the tune, I was going between having an actual shop give me a tune or do what you did. So I think I’ll get that down pipe in there, remove my DEF system, remove EGR, and get her tuned the way you described 😎👍🏼
