Would you use this bag as your everyday backpack?
@ljubomirbardzic

Definitely not, I like backpacks that can carry camera gear securely and efficiently and this just doesn't do that. It's advertised as a camera backpack but I think it's better suited for general purpose everyday use.

No. I like rolling my own organization and the design of these bags is for people who primarily want this kind of organization. I like a big cavernous space to have pouches etc. with some zippered pockets. Just not my cup of tea.

Tip! Try to put the Tech Pouch standing up on the top of the bag, in that case you can grab everything out of the Tech Pouch when you open the Maglatch!

I really enjoyed this review along with your Peak tech pouch review. For the backpack, I didn’t think of doing the crossover method for the magnetic straps so that reduces the footprint further! It’s a bummer about the waist strap not being included but I’ll look at purchasing the strap once it is released. I liked how you put the cubes in there for storage too. I’m going to look into that! I’m on week 2 of using this bag and I’m loving it so far. I’ve used it a few times on photo shoots (DSLR, 70-200mm lens, 2 AD200 flashes, trigger, accessories) and it was easy to operate while I had my Spider Holster on my hip. The strap adjustments are fantastic and the side access was easy to get inside. No issues with the comfort of the straps with this heavy weight inside. I hear that was a complaint from V1 but these seem fine to me. I’ve also put my V1 Peak Design Everyday Messenger bag on hold so I can use this backpack for work and it’s been a nice change to really USE this backpack and dig into its features. I’m carrying a 13’ HP laptop, 12.9” iPad Pro with Brydge Keyboard, portfolio, some file folders, my lunch, and more. Love all of the little storage areas to keep things organized. Easy on, easy off. In reviewing comparisons with other photography backpacks, it seems like the people who don’t like the Peak backpack prefer the backpacks where you lay the bag on the ground and open it up all the way. I think that works best for getting gear from point A to point B. Where the Peak backpack shines though is that I can keep the bag on my shoulder and access my gear while on the move so I think that’s the differentiator. This bag functions for me while I’m mobile and not always in a place where I can lay the bag on the ground. It’s wet and muddy in Pennsylvania right now. That’s the last place I want to put my $300 backpack. LOL! Different uses for different people but this Peak backpack is working great for my use!

Exactly my opinion too. Tried a high quality 40L backpack from a different brand, but it absolutely didn't work with the lay-on-ground-to-open design. I am back on the V1 and still living it, even if it is banged up now after 5-6 years of traveling the world 🙂🙂🙂

Just got mine today! Went with the black 20L bag. I previously just bought an Incase DSLR Pro bag. It was a solid bag but just too big for every day carry. I find this bag fits my 13 inch MacBook Pro, 11 inch iPad Pro, camera and a bunch of other stuff. On top of all that, I think it looks great.

I used this pack for a two week photography trip to Indonesia. I was carry-on only, all my normal travel stuff plus Olympus camera gear and PD tripod. My personal item was a Tom Binh Synik 22. The PD pack worked though it was a little tough transitioning between travel mode and photography mode. I basically had to repack the thing every day. I also used a packable tote to carry the clothes, toiletries, chargers, etc when I was using the pack as a camera bag. The pack endured a downpour at the bottom of a very wet waterfall. It kept everything dry except for a tiny bit of water that got in while I was getting stuff in and out of the pack. If you are careful with the top flap it will keep everything dry. CAUTION: the side sippers make loading and using the pack simple but a couple of times I forgot that I had a zip open and lifted the pack up, dropping a lens in three cases. You need to train yourself to verify that the zippers are all closed before moving the pack around. It's a great pack, very high quality and full of thoughtful details. As a camera bag, it's okay. The side zips make it easy to get the camera gear in and out but are also dangerous and prone to dropping gear if you forget the zipper is open. If I were flying on restrictive airlines where a small minimalist pack was needed, I would take this. Otherwise I'd use the PD 45L pack with a camera cube.

Thanks for the review, waiting for the 20l to arrive soon. About the sternum strap. I read somewhere that a buyer complained about the strap to Peak Design, thinking it was a manufacturing error that the strap was difficult to use and he received a reply explaining that it was intended that way, at least from one side of the bag. The left part is designed to be a tight fit that would not come off easily, and the right side was designed to be looser, and to be used whenever you want. I guess so you wouldn't lose the strap that easily. Thought I'd share that info.

I've been looking for a backpack that opens an entire side (as opposed to a small window). I have just two lenses, and this bag would make it easy to switch the lenses on the fly and store the camera attached to either one. The bag I have now requires me to reshuffle the items every time I switch the lens. Origami-style dividers also seem great for quick on-the-fly adjustments. I ordered mine 30L just now. @Damian Sliwinski My primary concern with my bag was it not being able to be locked, they chose to ignore that so I wouldn't get the new one, if they had done so I would have bought a new one and just sold the old one. That being said they downgraded the V2 in my opinion, I don't like the new interior side pockets either. Basically unless I use some sort of ghetto cable locks I can't secure my $1,500 plus laptop and my $2,000 plus camera and I would need 5 of them which is crazy.

I think there is a major design flow inside the bag. There appear to be a few metal zippers inside, which can easily scratch cameras, etc. This needs to be re-designed.

I like the design of the bag but I think they should do a design without the side flaps. I feel like the side flaps are too focused towards photography and ruin the "everyday" idea of it for "normal" people like myself. Still, I've just found this channel are enjoy your reviews.

Thank you for the thorough review! I’ve been wanting to pick up this bag for a while. Do you think the upgrades in V2 are worth it, or do you think it’s worth just getting the V1 while Peak has them on sale? I've lived with the v1 24/7 for 3 years and it surely wasn't without issue, but the chages to the sidepanel for unzipping and folding out are definitely a step backwards. No 2 ways about it. It will not open as wide, doesn't do so at all without forcing it, and will breakdown (somehow) over time. Secondly, they significantly changed the layout of how the side panel pockets unzip and store things inside, and this is also a step backwards. They can't store as much, they're less organized, and things can fall out. Overall, I like the v2, but it's going to take some getting used to. Those cons I mentioned are not opinion based, I've been living with the v2 for a couple weeks now and those are the automatic points that jump out at me as "man, I wish you hadn't done that" points. But the major improvement are the straps, the laptop + tablet pocket, and (less so) the main carry handle. My opinion so far, is the v2 is nicer, but the v1 is more functional, especially if you aren't dealing with packing a laptop and a tablet into the same carry pouch. If you have a tablet and laptop, just go v2.

Just got this for photo camera gear and now I'm looking for ways to secure lenses inside, can't believe the designers haven't thought of this? Everything is lose inside. Specially the small primes, which you don't want to be rattling with your movement. Without extra pouches to hold lenses this bag simply doesn't work. Need something to hold your gear. Should have placed elastic straps on those separators for this kind of design.

My biggest issue with this bag, and the other bags is that these little loops, whether you lock them or not, can easily be cut with a fingernail clipper in about a second or two. It just seems like this is a weak point. I want to like this bag, but I keep going back to the limitations.

Thanks for the awesome review Tom! One of my main complaints for V1 was the comfort of the bag. If you are traveling and will have the bag on your shoulders for up to 3 hours at a time, or going around Paris with your camera and some other daily essentials (like snacks etc), would the V2 be comfortable for such a task? With V1, even the 20L, the shoulder straps were just too uncomfortable and I ended up selling the bag

I'm going to be traveling with a small roller bag, but need something for my camera gear, laptop, and perhaps a bit extra. You mentioned this was good as a partner to a roller bag (or something like that). That's exactly what I'm looking for - so given that, are there others that you I might look at that fall into that category - good for camera gear to go along with a roller bag, for travel, and then as an EDC for when I'm home? Thanks for any thoughts!

Not a camera user at all, but I do like this backpack. I can agree with the cons that you pointed out though. I mostly my backpack as an EDC for work, but want to take on vacation. Would this one be comfortable enough to wear for a week going through the Disney parks every day? If not, any ~30L recommendation? Preferably a top loader/tri zip. I looked at your site, and like the UA24 but it's not quite wide enough (I have a bulky item that I need to be able to carry occasionally).

at 8:55 you mention there isn't a way to stop someone from getting into the maglatch compartment. But those hopps on the inside of the flap, which you did a solution with, could also be used with the bottom ext. straps. crossing the bag from the bottom, and then connecting to the latch point on the inside? If somone were to pull open the mag latch, the "hooks" on the straps would just tighten. Maybe that works for you guys! :)

I like the lid, but not how they implemented it. The lid really should be longer, IMO, and go down at least to the bottom quarter of the bag instead of the top quarter. Magnetic folds or some kind of folds or stretchiness could make it easier to get out of the way if extra length isn't needed.

V1 was the worst camera bag I have ever used in my 15+ years as a videographer. From the looks of V2, they removed two of the 3 things I liked and found useful on the bag. The wing pockets were great for organization and quick access, and the old key change (as you stated) was much better. The third thing was the side pockets. They can swallow a Moza Air with T handle with ease.

The version one outperforms the new bag, no idea why they changed the laptop section, the storage space on the sides are now more limited. I have never had an issue with the straps being uncomfortable on the v1 so I am puzzled as to why there are complaints there. The leashes at the side of which my 30L (26L in reality) came with one either side are so much better than these elastic bungee cords that just don’t suit the bag at all. The hidden pocket inside now is more obvious that it’s a pocket than before also. Stick with V1 people

In the market for a new camera bag can someone just tell me what the best bag is so I can get safe hours in watching reviews?
@1lifeonearth

the function of the bag looks great. the look of the bag looks terrible. it looks like some nerd hipster architecture bitch would be carrying it. you gotta make it look cooler like a north face or osprey pack. the strapping system also needs to be much more rugged and adventurous for extreme hiking, not just walking around on a side walk.
@ljubomirbardzic
@ljubomirbardzic 4 года назад
This is a great backpack but a terrible camera bag. There so many nice details and features on this bag but the way camera gear is stored inside is plain awful compared to other camera backpacks out there. If you need an everyday backpack then this should work great for you but if you need to carry camera gear I would recommend you look elsewhere.
@denis4yk19
@denis4yk19 4 года назад
Ljubomir Bardzic I’d say it’s perfect, if you need both (for minimal travel + some mirrorless kit). If you do photography for life, it may be worth buying a separate, more robust bag. But as a one size fits all approach this one fits the best. (IMHO, ofc)
@venom5809

Agreed, even as a hobbyist camera person I have to say it really isn't great as a camera bag but I still love my V1. For actual camera stuff if I have everything my Case Logic camera backpack is much better. What I like about my V1 is I can use it if I am say walking around the city and have my camera in the bottom and still have space above to keep stuff in that I carry with my or buy when I am out. Being able to strap a coat or jacket to the outside instead of having to put it inside and take up space is great too.
@denis4yk19
@denis4yk19 4 года назад
venom5809 exacly. I mean perfect, if you have to choose 1 backpack for every possible situation. I love, that I can put food containers, jars, lenses, mac, sony, movi freefly and for every scenario I can tweak this bag and be 95% satisfied.
@ljubomirbardzic
@ljubomirbardzic 4 года назад
@@venom5809 I completely agree with you, for carrying everyday items and then just adding one camera to the mix is what this backpack can do well. My problem with it is that they advertise it as a full on camera bag and it just doesn't do that very well.
@venom5809
@venom5809 4 года назад
Ljubomir Bardzic Yep, there’s no way I would use this if I were a pro. I travel a fair amount of places and the camera bag I see most people with is the Lowepro Protactic 450. Even though Peter McKinnon has his own bag I bet he still uses the Lowepro backpack. lol

The magnets aren't strong enough to make a huge difference, technically speakers involve magnets so just don't put your laptop near a speaker ig
