I have considered doing this; leverage a whole-home battery to run A/C during peak hours. Even if you charge it from off-peak grid, you'll save a little on energy costs, and it helps tame the duck curve. Nice to know there's a term for it: Peak-shaving. Also yeah, I would put a downspout and screen on the intake.

Nice setup... another great idea from our mentor.. ;) 4 any1 who wants 2 do anything similar, I would recommend a metal box (instead of plastic) it will definitely help with the heat dissipation... Move the fan (& hole) from the door to the bottom... The hot air out needs a baffle to prevent rain entry (depending on where u live) Also a bigger inverter (& battery as needed) would probably negate the over heating issue & mean less timers needed etc...

Just one tip jehu, I think a lot of new/uninformed viewers of your channel would certainly appreciate if you would explain just very briefly the grand sceme of things that led to you making a specific video or respectively just explain the project in simple terms. Maybe you previously made a video explaining what this array you made is about, but I have now watched the entire video and I have no clue what this thing actually does. Maybe other people feel like that too, while you expect everyone to be „in“ on it. What do you people think, do I have a point here?

That's brilliant. This is very similar to how generators for our radio sites control timing for load. Our systems use large Libert UPS systems and they have about 30 seconds between switching. Those do have a transfer switch though to shift from commercial power to ups and then back after restored. That's about the only difference really though. The function is really similar.

Nice project, It may have been said somewhere in the 350+ comments below, but you might want to check the factory sequence of operation on the A/C unit. Usually the sequence for A/C turning off includes 2 or more stages. First the compressor turns off and about 5-10 seconds later the condenser and evaporator fans turn off. Your DIY setup is performing a hard shutdown. This will slightly over stress the refrigeration cycle and potentially cause abnormal wear on the A/C unit. Switching the A/C unit off via the thermostat wires (instead of the electrical disconnect) will generally restore factory sequence of operation. Cool project dude!

Hey Jehu - Wanted to point out that that A/C unit is installed incorrectly there is supposed to be a few feet of clearance around the condenser (radiator) of the unit. With part of it facing the wall it wont draw in air as efficiently and therefore use more power to remove the same amount of heat.

@chouckham
@chouckham 5 лет назад
Jehu, this is really great design and application!!! Have you ever tested/ played with the Grid-Tie Inverters with the built-in Limiter? They monitor your usage from the grid (with CT sensor) and only kick in and delivery the same level or slightly less amount of energy back into your local grid so that you're only covering the usage from your provider and nothing more. Some of reasons behind this development are because the grid often doesn't pay you to feed-in (unless you have an existing or grandfathered agreement) and it could be illegal unless you've registered with them, use approved equipment, have it electrically certified and inspected, etc... So, essentially you've achieved something very very similar and developed it further since you've designed in a battery charging phase/ switch-over. Get this hooked up to your solar to really make a bigger saving/ RoI impact. Very nice! Looking forward to the detailed design. Cheers.

It’s a good concept to get going, and really showing how an application can be implemented. It’s a grid tied inverter, so it should be off if there is no line voltage, correct.. or is there a need for the transfer switch.? Because as the graph showed, you were only supplementing the power demand. A key point here, and i am not sure if you own your home or not, is that upgrading your AC to a higher SEER rating will give you much more of an efficient unit. And those exercises should be done first before this especially if you had an older R-22 unit that are far less efficient with the lower head pressures. Also, an inverter AC unit would greatly help that initial startup spike, as they run constantly at lower speeds rather than cycling 50% of the time. to help save the impact on that inverter, do you have a time delay in your relays from when the AC kicks on. Before the inverter starts running. (Maybe i missed you talking about this?) With that 1000 watt inverter, i assume your base draw is far below that, which is why you are turning it on (given the parameters) with the AC unit. Sorry for the long post. :)

@deanwilliams93
@deanwilliams93 5 лет назад
@@sailingadventurous784 Yep, think you have it. Just looked up the inverter , plus Jehu refers to the inverter as "these guys" plural. Since output is 115vdc that must be how it is providing 230 to the outside unit. Threw me till your comment so thanks for the observation. As grid tied ,I am also guessing if the grid goes down the inverters will not energize to maintain safety and prevent feed back to the utility during power outages. Pretty good prototyping.

What is charging the batteries? We installed 22 solar panels. So far it seems to pay about 75% electric bill. When we pay these panels we are going to see if there is an area on our roof for enough to pay our bill 100%. The plus of all of this it will add $10,000 to our house at selling time. Don’t ya just love it. For some reason I feel like I’m putting it to the man. Plus, my art shop (My He-Shed is solar powered accept my Ac/Heater unit. This is probably my favorite video yet. I don't have time of day power but my company has it as an option. I think I will need to set something like this soon. As an aside. Like if I plug this in to the wall where I have a window AC, will the amp that hits my breaker be lessened because of the power being fed right next to the AC?

@@jehugarcia I dont really trust cheap chinese tech ever to run at 100% so I keep healty margin and provide each inverter with a max of 600w of panels :) That way they are very unlikely to ever burn out and make me replace them. So in your case, maybe adding third to share the load would provide better operational cycle? Or would that also be just pulled to full load due to drain being higher than 2.2kw? Pretty cool idea, I think California peak is around 50 cents and likely to keep climbing, so this will pay off faster than a solar power setup, but is also a good compliment to a solar install.

@@olemissjim Average of 4.65 inches of precipitation in December around California, so not completely true. Dew & moisture as well as ingress for creepy crawlies is something to be thought about though.

You could also have a device automatically spray water over the AC coils when it turns on to make cooling more efficient.

I noticed that you have not set up 90-degree elbows over any of your openings to prevent rainwater from blowing back into the box and shorting out the electronics.

Cool work. But, put the inverters in a metal box, make it larger so they have room for airflow. Perhaps you can increase their duty cycle.

>^. .^< Aloha from Pennsylvania, Looks like the Kapalua area..... Turm left and experience one of Maui's old circle island roads 340 and stop at Julia's Banana bread stand for a Maui treat. The old part of the road starts just after Julia's stand when going clockwise........... Wish I could clue you in to the Old Pali road on Oahu, but you can only walk it now. As a kid my sister n I would scrunch up together on the mountain side of my dad's 1955 pea green Nash Ranbler station wagon car we loevd the road so much.....

What is the best material to enclose failures of Lithium Ion and other family batteries that we use in, for instance, Jehu's projects? What is the material that that company used?

booster pack is coming along nicely, I'm looking for some decent solar panels and someone that could 3d print me a part, if I released details on something it could take a while for me to get a provisional patent with a prototype in the meantime someone could easily 3d print it and I'd still be broke, for now to protect the idea a provisional patent could be obtained without a prototype then the provisional patent could be sold then the buyer 3d prints it and obtains the rights to the patent, I'd rather watch people 3d print it is excellent next they'll be 3d printed vehicles. also send a copy of the provisional patent to yourself and don't open it, a lawyer isn't needed in either especially that could handle designs of some electrical like your EV in order to explain the idea through a provisional patent application, even the patent office officials can't understand applications but issue a provisional patent application then you prove it with a prototype and you own it then a patent is granted. How far back you can come up with evidence that you created something and someone else is benefiting off it used to be illegal. digital is provable evidence and you can renu the application for more time to make a prototype, easy to do, you come up with new things all the time, improving(a improvision) something is applicable making it yours. costs like 80 dollars
