The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

undoubtedly, Pearl Bailey is one of the most incredible live performers that show business ever bred. I can't believe how successful she is at making Ed Sullivan entertaining! Her superb musicality allows her to jump out of the song to make an impromptu remark (scripted or in the moment - who cares) and then jump right back in at just the right moment. Her musical directors had to be on their toes, that's for sure!

That was Terrific 😊☺️ Ed Sullivan and Pearl Bailey, Ed was singing and dancing with her. I know that they're in heaven laughing, singing and dancing, looking down here at each of us. Saying they're enjoying this segment 😊😊😊😊. Also I love her dress , real fashion never goes out of style. I wish I had that dress today.

I'm 58 now and remember watching Pearl Bailey and other entertainers from her time on tv as a kid. It was all so much fun to watch tv during those times. She's been gone 33 years now.

I actually had the pleasure to draw ms. Bailey's lab work ( phlebotomy ) back when. And when I missed 2 times ( insert groan here ) she was as charming as could be. She called me 'honey' and gave me an orchid from her bedside. A memory never to be forgotten.........

There’s a wonderful gospel singer named Lynda Randall whose voice is much lower than Pearl’s. Pearl could reach fairly high notes - she had great range. I’m an alto and I appreciate the power of Pearl’s vocals at all points in her range. She didn’t use falsetto at all - to my knowledge. Lynda Randall’s voice is incredible too - so rich and melodious.

It's interesting - while Queen Latifah looks like her, Ellen DeGeneres actually is more her descendent in terms of humor. (Obviously, not the pipes to sing, but the cadence, the way she plays with timing and interrupting herself.) Great voice, I wish I'd been around to see her Dolly Levi.
