While Elvis Presley was in town to make a movie, there was the plan to build the Arizona Memorial. He wanted to help so badly that he asked his manager, Col Tom Parker that he wanted to do a fundraising concert. His concert in 1961 at Bloch Arena (at Pearl Harbor) raised the first $5k to start the process.

I know these are posted a few days behind, but nice to see things are turning around for you. Looking forward to what you guys manage to find in the final stretch. Personally I'm hoping for Kualoa Ranch or Polynesian Cultural Center... but I'd settle for at least seeing you guys find a decent restaurant.

I can imagine the feel of Pearl Harbor very well. In school here in germany, we went to the KZ Buchenwald. Places like that, were horrible stuff happened, have definitely a certain feel to it, that you will never forget.

Pearl Harbor is certainly a somber place. If you liked that sort of naval military history, if you ever end up going to Baltimore (or D.C. and taking a day trip to Baltimore), the Inner Harbor has the USCG Lightship and the USS Torsk along with a (granted going off of decade-old memories) excellent naval museum. Also a very good aquarium.

That submarine is awesome! I'd have loved to have done that as a kid. Like, its one thing to know about the cramped conditions inside a submarine, its another thing completely to have stood there in person.

As born/raised local Hawaiian, have only visited Pearl Harbor (Pu'uloa in Hawaiian)...3x, the last time +/-25 yrs(?)...if that. When you realize the historical importance of What happened & What the memorial represents...it's an Ominnous, Somber, Sobering revelation!-IMO anyway. At the memorial are 1177 sailors btwn 17-25 y/o...(officers were >35 y/o +)....that Never saw the light of the next day & who Never made it home....😢😢😢

Jewelry store for a submarine museum is apt, you never know when you are struck with a pin-hole leak after you accidentally hijack a nuclear sub during war games and only your disobedient son's earring can plug it.

I understand how military stuff can feel silly. I think for us in the U.S. the monarchy stuff can feel silly as well. I've read up on Pearl Harbor, the issue is there was a lot going on in the world and definitely in Japan at the time. Most of us view WW2 specifically through a lens of Germany's politics and are not encourage or taught to read up on what some other countries may have been doing at the same time (their objectives, political beliefs, etc).

"Imagine how loud this place is" well Emma not very seeing sound is death for subs :p. I can also feel Mikes pain on the sub as someone a tad more than 6 feet i do not want to ever be on an active sub XD. Also man the Arizona is just haunting thinking about. Most the sailors dead in their sleep and now forever watched over by the Mighty Mo where the war ended.

You were mentioning in a previous video you don’t see much culture and you proceed to go look at the palace but don’t take a tour. It was so beautiful and eye opening honestly.
@mebrandonb
@mebrandonb 2 месяца назад
I think he was referring to existing culture, not cultural relic photo ops. The people of Hawaii still exist, they aren't just monuments.
@tcs199111
@tcs199111 2 месяца назад
@@mebrandonb never said the people of Hawaii didn’t exist, but even preach mentioned most of them are getting pushed out. We heard the same thing talking to locals when we were there last year. That is one reason why they are pushing to make airbnbs illegal. But understanding the history is so cool and so important. Like knowing how the queen of Hawaii was locked in a room for months. How a group of entrepreneurs helped overthrow the government, and how the US helped with that.
@Dotoku44
@Dotoku44 2 месяца назад
@@tcs199111 Culture isn't equal to history. Living in the moment is culture. I can read the history of Hawaii from anywhere in the world. Experiencing the culture is different. You had the experience of : "And hear we have a replica of a Hawaiian! Too bad we pushed them all to one side of the island... Anyway next exhibit." and ate it up. You're the kind of tourist that causes shit like this to happen.
@tcs199111
@tcs199111 2 месяца назад
@@Dotoku44 lol I am glad you know exactly what kind of tour I had. I think there is an intersection between history and culture that can serve both purposes. Being able to stand in the room that Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned in for 8 months and reading the story of the images you created in the form of a blanket of her peoples experiences? That shit is powerful. The culture of today is not the culture of Hawaiins in the 1800s. So what is your solution for that? Just don’t?
@xviper2k
@xviper2k Месяц назад
@@Dotoku44 Culture cannot exist without history. It isn't simply "living in the moment." I can also tell very easily that you've never actually been to Hawaii, you only complain about how you think the natives are treated from thousands of miles away. Suggesting the place has no culture is utterly absurd. The sort of thing only a snobbish foreigner would say.

what you're going to do for the next few days... I got told off by @phase_1471 for not acknowledging that you guys were going snorkeling somewhere on another day and that that kid's pool-lagoon was just for snorkel practice? Shark cove, electric beach are two snorkeling spots that come to mind. But you do have to rent a car. There is a bus that goes there but it has a very limited schedule :(. Glad you had a fun day! I'm not sure if this is the conspiracy about Pearl Harbor that Mike was talking about, but if you're interested, here's what was talked about when I was growing up in the States: The US government knew before the attack on Pearl Harbor that Japan was going to attack, and let it happen rather than try to intercept the attack/inform the people stationed at Pearl Harbor. There's anecdotal evidence that the US moved their very important carriers out of Pearl Harbor days before the attack so they wouldn't be damaged in the process. The US wanted this to happen because they wanted to galvanize America to enter WW2, and felt they needed to be attacked for the people to accept the wartime effort. The heavy US sanctions on oil for Japan effectively forced the Japanese hands to act. By forcing Japan to attack, the US could declare war on Japan in return, which due to the Axis treaty between Germany/Italy/Japan, would force Germany and Italy to declare war on the US as well, which brought US troops into Europe after being attacked by Japan from Asia.
@xviper2k
@xviper2k Месяц назад
I won't speak on silly conspiracy theories about the US letting itself get attacked (it's far too "Jet fuel can't melt steel beams" for my liking) but I will say the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor had little to do with sanctions and more to do with Japanese imperialism. Not only did the US want Japan to withdraw from China, but Pearl Harbor was also just one small part of a much larger, synchronized attack that included the invasions of overseas US territories Guam, Wake Island & the Philippines (along with various British territories.) The latter was particularly important, as it sat next to vital shipping lanes and the Japanese couldn't achieve their goal of conquering all of East Asia with the US presence there, and they knew they stood no chance against the US in a protracted war, so they attempted to take out the US Navy in one fell swoop at Pearl Harbor. It didn't work.
