I used this at my son's funeral.. Only last week. Love it. I felt that parts of it could be interpreted from both sides. The mourners and the deceased. Not a dry eye in the Chapel. I also used Eddie Vedder's version of "keep me in your heart" Just amazing!
I’m sorry for your loss. I had a good friend pass away in the early 2000’s and he loved Coldplay’s Yellow. It was played at his funeral. Every time I hear the song to this day it takes me back to when he was here. You made a great pick to honor your son.
Ed is a lyrical genius. Pj is very diverse..and yes this song is an emotional one. It's beautiful..and fits nicely In a sit-down part of a show like when pj had the 3 hr shows and a sit-down encore. I heard it live in Chicago 2018 ❤ I can say I never considered this country
This song is all about the lyrics for me, when my Mum passed away it was one of the songs that I was listening to at that time. I’m not a country fan but a huge Pearl Jam fan.

I was having a conversation with my wife about how there was a PJ song for so many moments in my life. From friends I lost, to love’s I lost, Man of the Hour and Release takes me to the loss of my dad. RVM sings about my escape from an abusive mother that tried to kill me and ended up putting me in a coma I even have it in my will to play Yellow Ledbetter right before they lower me in the ground. With so many songs for so many moments, there wasn’t one I could share with my wife. A month later this song came out and the circle was complete. I had it all, and Eddie sang it all.
This is definitely NOT country. If you need to put it in a different genre, I’d say it’s closer to folk. But honestly, I just think it’s a softer song from a skilled grunge rock band. It was inspired by the song Tuolomne that Eddie Vedder did for the soundtrack to “Into the Wild”. Not sure why a heavy metal/rock band can do a ballad & not have it be considered country, but you consider this country. Odd.
This song got me and my wife through the grief of losing my mother and her father just a few months apart from each other. It really hits different at those times.
I can understand you hearing a country vibe... Willie Nelson and his son Lucas did a cover... and so did Miley Cyrus. Glad you enjoyed the lyrics. "Even Flow" video or "Porch" PinkPop '92 really shows them rocking out in the early day.
I feel like it’s far from a boring song. The production and mixing on this track are really clean and well cut, there’s a lot of instrumentation that kicks in throughout the entire song that really helps convey the message in the song, but I do understand that it is a different song especially sonically from what they are known for.

It's a grieving song. It helped me during grieving a potential divorce, but luckily we were able to save our marriage. But a part of myself died that time. Those scares take time to heal. This song will always have that timestamp on me.
Check out Comes then Goes in your spare time. He can nail the singer/songwriter thang or he can just rock out. That’s the great thing about being pleasantly surprised by something. I remember there was a tv special post 911 and Eddie, Mike, and Neil Young performed Long Road on that fundraiser/special (whatever it was) and I was blown away. Anyway yeah this band’s contribution to music has been strong to say the least.
Been my favourite band since 'Ten' was released and this is my favourite song of theirs. They have many styles of songs - why they have been going for 30+ years I guess. Maybe they just aren't your thing man.

This isn’t a country song and it was a pretty poor take on the song. There are slow songs out there and the lyrics were what the song was about. Songs are meant to evoke different emotions in different situations. It’s unfair to compare this song to an upbeat one as it wasn’t meant to be. Also, a band stays relevant by experimenting with different sounds and giving their fans songs to go to at different times. Is this going to be a song a I jam to down the road? No, but it is a song that evokes certain emotions and the lyrics always have me contemplate about my place in it all.
