hyped for this. goth is a huge talent (her range from x to suspiria to emma is amazing) i think i might end up liking this better than x. Also i feel like west doesnt get mentioned enough on the 'i wish so and so would do a big studio movie' wishlist.
Well tell everyone you know to support these kind of original films so we get more of it and so that Ti West and Mia can be more successful and get bigger films!
I hope she gets an Oscar nomination for this if the film is successful. But it's very difficult for performances in horror to get recognized at these Hollywood award shows!
I love how Ti West trust Mia. Love when directors let the actresses do their job. This allowed Mia to take the role and do what she pleased. Her take on the character captivated you and as an audience member, I found myself feeling protective over her and even getting upset when she didn't get the part. Truly, was sitting there rooting for Mia to kill the judges🤣😭

Being such an overlooked talent for so long before her breakout with X and Pearl, really gives her performance as Pearl serious meta vibes. I love how Ti West is daring The Academy to give Mia a nomination of Best Actress, with her minutes long one monologue at the end of the movie.
I loved it. Mia Goth is amazing and I hope she gets an Oscar nomination for this role. I love that although it edges on the tired "sympathy for the devil" trope rampant in movies and TV lately where evil icons are being retconned with sob stories seeking sympathy or reason, they commit to portraying it in it's purest form. Devastating though? Maybe there's mother-daughter dynamics that I don't understand or could ever identify with but once what needs to be known is known, Pearl's staircase scene shows she was capable of empathy, which is impossible from psychopathy. Aside from the fear based faith dependent 'Mother's Knows Best' mothering, in hindsight on the discipline issue maybe the mother was in self-preservation mode since the reveal showed she knew a lot more than she let on for a lot longer than the viewer. Absent of psychopathy, you can make a case for Pearl being a version of Veruca Salt let loose on a serial murder spree for not getting what she wants. Pearl is a horror iconic for how she was realized without compromise as an example of pure & simple Evil, layered with a dissection of sex as show & tell on top of delusions of stardom and daddy & mommy issues. Nature vs Nurturing. I'm so excited for MaXXXine.
I just felt real sad that she just relapsed into staying on that farm forever. She’s still a terrible person but god we are comfortable sometimes with what is familiar even if it hurts us to stay there. That’s what I think one of the subtext was at least.
X was good and very disturbing. I enjoyed it but I was too hyped cause I thought the twist was going to be something supernatural. Pearl I'm excited for and see why she's unhinged.
Mia elevates "Pearl" to the stratosphere! And I love Ti West's stylistic choices, from the music to shot composition. 4 out 5 stars for me. Perhaps more than usual, independent film has become the showcase for first-rate starring roles for female actors. The best I've seen this year have been Maika Monroe in "Watcher," Aubrey Plaza in "Emily the Criminal," and Mia Goth in "Pearl." Outstanding performances all!
Spoiler Alert: Both this and X were extremely uncomfortable watches for me, yet I couldn’t look away with either film. Also, I’m currently in a production of Wizard of Oz and this seemed like an extremely dark parody of it. Obviously you have the scarecrow scene, represented the projectionist. That cuts straight to a shot of the mother, who comes across as heartless, chopping wood (Tin Man gets the same introduction), and her father, constantly looking at Pearl with fear, representing the Cowardly Lion. Finally, you have Mitzi, the good blonde, as a stand-in for Glinda. Just thought that was interesting, and I’m almost certain it was intentional.
I saw today and loved it. X is in my Top 5 of the year and this would be in Top 10. So clever how it replicated technicolor films of the 30's and 40's. The credits and music made me laugh out loud. Mia is going to win an Oscar one day. She is sha-mazing!!
I frequent a Cinemark location and see your bumpers a lot. There was a time frame where you sat in front of the Scream poster but your head would cover the ‘S’, so it would just say cream. Sad to see it gone, I loved pointing it out to my movie going buddies anytime I’d go
Just watched Pearl Friday and now I’ll be watching it again tonight! I actually love this movie more than X and it might actually become one of my favorite films in general. Also great review 😁👍

Pearl is not able to live the life that she thought she was entitled to due to restraints by her mother and as a result turns into a homicidal maniac. That just shows you how very fragile the human psyche can be.

Depends on what you’re looking for. Pearl is incredibly different in tone and pacing, more of a character study, to be honest. I liked it more than X, but that’s because I greatly enjoy character driven narratives.
I really didn't like X. Thought it was shamelessly graphic without substance. Pearl was the exact opposite. Thoughtful, daring, challenging, thematically rich, and creatively capturing. Fingers crossed for MaXXXine.
So…it’s not as gratuitous as X. There is only one full on sex scene, but it doesn’t involve nudity. There actually really isn’t any nudity period. I loved X, but I wasn’t a huge fan of all of the sex (yeah yeah, hypocritical that I’m okay with gore and not sex yada yada lol) could be because I watched it with my mom 😅😅😅
@@kotaac. I almost forgot, mainly because I was too caught up in other stuff, there is a brief sequence of black and white p*rnography! It has butts lol but definitely still sexual. I actually came back to this comment upset that I forgot lol but it’s still not as bad as X
