In this video, you can follow along with me as I use peat moss for the renovation of an area of a driveway. This isn’t a method I’m used to - or one that my father or his father used in their work so it’s interesting to see how it turns out.
➡️ To test it, I spread peat moss on one part of the area I was renovating and then left the other part clear. You’ll be able to see what happened as I then carried out renovations and laid grass as usual across both areas.
As you’ll see, I came into this not massively keen on working with peat moss - and the experiment was affected by heavy rain which caused some of the soil to be washed away. Nevertheless, it was really useful to see how peat moss affected growth
➡️ This is just one example of the experiments I carry out on this channel to see what methods and tools work best for gardens.

I wasted hundreds trying to grow grass in my backyard without peat moss. Did it with peat moss this time at its growing amazingly well.

Retaining moisture, seed coverage from birds, help seed to soul contact. It definitely has beni's at an extra cost. I use it myself but it is not necessary in every situation. Grass can grow anywhere. I personally like it because I'm not the absolute best at watering multiple times a day to keep the seed moist so it traps that moisture in there fire me. Were you growing it on a slope?

It totally works! I went through like 15 bags on my front lawn this spring and the results were way better. Messiest job I’ve ever had to do though lol. Worth it. It was a ton of work though.

I used straw/hay blankets for a while but hated that they always smoothed the new grass after a heavy rain. I switched to peat moss and saw better results, as well as a reduced worry of introducing weeds.

Hi Clint, great channel and nice to see you representing the Filipino community. I’m doing my first lawn renovation ever with perennial ryegrass. Right now fighting against the elements. I used peat moss which worked well on the dead grass areas but the bare dirt spots I have to use use a seeding mat to prevent wash outs. Today is day 5 after seeding and I have seen a few sprouts but not much. I’m hoping things will pick up during. Days 5 - 10. Wish me luck.

From my experience. I won't be using peat moss again. Last year I applied peat moss to my reseeding project. I might have gotten 25% of my KBG to come up. But, I had moss growing all over my yard!!! Never had this issue b4 using peat moss in the 4 years working on my lawn. This year, I'm reseeding again with NO peat moss! My hat goes off to you though. You've done very well on your home Reno. Just my take on my situation. I'll wait to see your results??? Good luck!

Peat moss adds biomass to your soil which adds nitrogen as it decomposes. Farmers use cover crops that they till back into the soil. I use rye grass in the winter time here in North Florida to do pretty much the same. It helps to one, control the winter weeds and provide natural nitrogen for my Argentine Bahia to start growing again in the Spring. I use one bag of peat moss mixed with one bag of black cow. I use a drill powered mortar mixer to break up peat and manure and to mix the two before I lay it down. I use it in our garden as well with good results so far, this is our fourth year with the garden, and we have been having better luck every year. The thing that probably helps germination the most with peat is holding the moisture and seed in place.
@TheNeighborDominator
@TheNeighborDominator Год назад
I use it regardless of what people say. I hear it doesn't break down though. Any truth to that?
@vstromrider625
@vstromrider625 Год назад
@@TheNeighborDominator it breaks down for sure. It is nothing more than scrapings from the the forest floors up North. I spread my wood chips from my chipper on my vacant property and in about six months it’s pretty much gone. Of course down here we have plenty of rain and heat for decomposing in the summer months. Here with the soil being mostly sand it will compact hard enough to make it difficult to penetrate with a shovel. That is another thing cover crops do is the roots help keep The soil loose. It has been an early spring here. The Red bud maples showed within a week of New Year’s Day. Almost all the trees here are completely leaved up now. Last year my rye grass lasted until May. This year it is better than half gone already. Happy growing.

Was just getting ready to run to Home Depot to get some peat moss, but after seeing the mess you had to go through spreading it, I'll take my chances. I just did a detach and over seed on about 2000 sq ft of my lawn. I raked it in pretty good after and even threw a little top soil I had on some of the bare spots just to cover the seed a little. Been watering it by hand 3-4 times a day. I might add a little more top soil to a few spots I noticed today, but I think it will be just fine without peat moss. Either way I am not going through that hassle. Glad I found this video....thanks.
@TheNeighborDominator
@TheNeighborDominator Год назад
The moss is overrated. It does help retain moisture and keep the seed in place but if you raked it in, and have the ability to water it like you are, no peat necessary. And man is it a mess! Thank you for commenting I appreciate it

the biggest benefit is keeping the seed moist and reducing risk of washout. That being said, if I had in-ground irrigation, I would never use peat moss. I have also had bad experiences of to much peat moss smothering seed. It's messy, expensive, and not necessary.

I live where there is an HOA and the landscaping company destroyed my lawn. Prior to moving here, I planted and took care of my garden and handled all lawn care myself. I know you're not supposed to mow when grass is wet and that the blade should be raised when you're not getting enough rain. This company, it seems, does not know the basics. There are people in the neighborhood who have roped off their new lawns because they had to repair or fully reseed themselves. They intend to mow their lawns themselves. I don't blame them. Now I need to deal with compacted soil and sections of moss while the majority is bare. I think that, given the slope I have here and poor soil quality, I have to go with peat moss. I know I first have to use a rotating aerators to break up the compacted dirt. I can't use anything beyond manual tools because there are sprinkler lines. You'd think they'd repair the killed lawn but, I have so much going on with my family that I don't have the energy to fight the HOA. The question I have is this: does it make a substantial difference to use that peat moss spreader versus using a rake to spread the peat moss? From what I've seen, the spreader can be expensive. I appreciate any advice you have. I want to do this right to get the best results. Thank you
@TheNeighborDominator
@TheNeighborDominator Год назад
It is not necessary to have one but it does save your back and gives you a nice even spread while collecting the extra debris that is in there. It all depends on how much land you are trying to cover. If it is a small area then by hand his fine, that is what I've always done! The one I have is a Landzie and was the only one available back in the day. It is around $200! But since then there are a few. This is the one I would have purchased. www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3R6YVHM/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_apa_gl_i_KP4X9FH22KMZPEXDA229?linkCode=ml1&tag=tnd02-20 It is significantly cheaper.

This video is an unfair comparison. You choose to do the comparison on a scope which always had a huge advantage of using peat moss. You should do this comparison on a leveled ground so that the result is more promising and fair. OR you should name the video title to be "Using peat moss vs not using peat moss on A SLOPED ground".
