Coco coir is far more expensive than Peat moss in most of the United States.

Hi Tisoy, I understand that. You can use other alternatives. May be sphagnum moss. The whole purpose of avoiding peat moss is to save our planet from the harmful effects of global warming and to prevent the depletion of this non renewable resource.

Lots of incorrect information in this video. Sphagnum peat moss is one of the most sustainable base amendments for gardening when harvested properly. Coconut husks are a waste product but they have many issues associated with them.

@@Homemakr I think you might want to do alot more research on this topic. Peat moss and sphagnum peat moss are both renewable resources. The bog itself takes a long time to develop but the moss itself grows one to five inches a year. There's millions of acres, almost a billon worldwide growing this commodity. My family has land in Northern Minnesota and it has sphagnum peat moss bogs. It's most definitely not harmful to harvest it responsibly. Also most places have laws protecting the moss bogs and if they don't grow a certain amount in a year then you can't harvest from that area.

Hi Homemakr, would sand or Humus be good alternatives to use as a soil medium/amendment instead of peat moss?
@Homemakr
@Homemakr 2 года назад
Hi there, Sand provides better aeration and drainage to the soil medium. This can be added in addition to composted bark or cococoir or sphagnum moss. whereas humus is partially decomposed organic matter which will help to provide nutrition to the plant and maintain soil structure. Cococoir, sphagnum moss or composted bark can be used instead of peatmoss.

Nice info.. it's was surprising to hear that there is difference between sphagnum moss & the other peatland moss you were talking. Can you please tell me difference between both as I use to think both are same. Please do reply & thanx in advance

Sphagnum moss is a live, green moss that grows in wetland environments like bogs and swamps. Peat moss, on the other hand, is the partially decomposed and dead remains of sphagnum moss and other plant material that accumulates over thousands of years in waterlogged, acidic conditions. They serve different purposes in gardening and horticulture.
