What I love about my Bandit is that it's great for the reasons you mention but it's also equally great for a clean jazz tone, believe it or not. I plug in my Epiphone Joe Pass and can get a gorgeous tone that's thick and chimey but NOT muddy. Also, the reverb on these is outstanding.

You are so correct. I have a 1994 Teal Peavey Bandit 112 & I can't turn it up past 2.5 or I risk divorce. So, I play most when the wifey isn't home. I've hooked up a Zoom Multi-Effects pedal & it provides a great clean foundation for many different kinds of crunch tones. Total cost with multi-effects pedal - $275. How can you beat that? 3 Card Monty Talk about maybe the best budget rig of all time with the Bandit and a Zoom Multi Effects unit, all the Zoom stuff is good but the newer G3n and G5n series take it to another level, when recorded (if someone actually knows what their doing) they can sound almost as good as all the expensive stuff like the Kempers and AXFX.

Got it for $150 and that sucker was so loud I think I could have played Dodger stadium! Struggling college student so had to sell it. Picked up a Line 6 Spider when I got some funds, and with all that digital modeling crap I hated it!!! I just wanted my Peavey back. i'm the proud father of a peavey transtube supreme, and the gain channel is excellent when the pre-gain is set at about 2-3. when plugging a distortion pedal like a metal muff through it, it just helps to warm and balance out the tone of your distortion and emulate how a tube amp takes pedals.

@srbell
@srbell 6 лет назад
I have both a red-strip Bandit and a silver strip Envoy and love the TransTube distortion from the drive channels. I think Peavey's TransTube is about as good as it gets. Btw, the Bandit and Envoy are very similar in their sound, the Envoy having a little less "thump" though due to only having a 10" speaker and a smaller cabinet. The drive circuitry is nearly identical in them, but the Envoy lacks the T-Dynamics feature. What the Envoy has going for it is it's MUCH lighter weight than the Bandit, so it's a nice grab-and-go amp.
@misterknightowlandco
@misterknightowlandco 6 лет назад
Glad to know im not the only one who loves the overdrive sound of a good Peavey SS amp. I've owned transtubes of all sorts in the past, loved them, sold most of them in the last year or so when ebay prices skyrocketed on them lol, but right now my main go to amp is a Peavey Bandit Solo Series 65 from 1984. Love the drive tone on it. I plug my 2014 Gibson Melody Maker directly in the drive channel and plug a digitech rp into the loop for delay and reverb and it kills man. To your point, I agree those transtube amps are awesome sounding and I enjoy using the t-dynamics as well. It makes that Bandit a little more tolerable as a home amp on low volume. I love the modern setting on clean and the vintage setting on dirt. I just wish the footpedal would allow you to switch those up without flicking the switch, but hey nothing is perfect.

No actually, it was on ebay, and I was very surprised to find that over the three days that it was up for sale, I was the only bidder. I bought it from a very nice chap in Leicester, and even better, this amp was indeed as he described. Which was as new, I couldn't believe my luck. I have numerous amps including perhaps my favourite...a Marshall DSL 40C which I replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion Vintage 30 16 ohm. Once run in, it sounds amazing. As for the Peavey bandit 112 silver stripe, wow, what an amp! Goes perfect with my Peavey T60 1978 guitar also in excellent condition. I replace the original pickups with some hot rodded seymour duncan pickups. That is a must buy if you get the chance, an absolute workhorse of a guitar with such a variety of tone. It's a Les Paul, Strat and Tele in one and plays great. :)

Just so we're keeping track of what a Transtube Bandit can do: 1) It's a good sounding pedal platform that you can dial some Fender vibes in and out using the Tube Dynamics 2) You can absolutely dial in a sick chug on the distortion channels 3) Then there's this trick where you can crank the cleans and dial up the TD and get it into Marshall territory In 2024, I still don't think there's a more flexible combo amp, at anywhere near the price. I got mine for $200 at GC so the price has gone up but it's still cheaper by a lot than a Katana

Whip is dead right about these killer little amps. The late great Micky Jones of Man was one of my favourite guitar players and I saw him play live many times. I heard him with amps by Ampeg, Marshall, Fender, Hiwatt, Laney....... At one point he turned up for a Glasgow gig with a Bandit and he still sounded like himself i.e. a huge range of great distinctive sounds just by riding that volume pot and boosting the mids with a half-cocked wah. You would never have guessed his amp cost a fraction of the price of his usual gear. If you can't cut it with one of these maybe it's because you just can't cut it.

If I recall correctly, the resonance button is for a fatter tone at lower volumes, but it's been a long time ago that I had it, back in the early 2000s. Might fatten up single coils too, can't recall, but it had some nice bells and whistles.

These old Bandits are far more versatile than many would figure. I have one of the silver-side Bandit 112’s that predates yours…running an Eminence “Texas Heat” 12” speaker, though a Celestion GB-style speaker would also yield good results. The gain section on mine has had a “Mesa” mod done to where it doesn’t mud up as much when it’s pushed, but the clean channel is far more useful. I’ve gigged with it in the past, had no problem keeping up with my buddy’s Blackstar. Good tone does NOT always require spending big bucks…

I agree 100%! His style, goal, is different, looking for 60s plexi cranked loud middle gain tone. I like the gain channel the best. It thumps, huge tone, keep gain at noon or below. If turn gain up too much, then gets fizzy, but kept low it nails hard rock, 80s metal, more - GnR, VH, Dokken, Kiss, Poison, Billy Idol, AcDc, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Priest, Ozzy, Whitesnake. Most underrated gain channel. Probably cause people turn gain to max and say fizzy, sucks, yes true cause you turned gain too high.

And that is the transtube technology that peavey has been advertising for years and people never gave attention. BTW, all the Bandits from the Silver Stripe on are the transtube technology and have the T. Dynamics control. On the newer model ("codpiece" or "cyclops", made in China) it is located on the back of the amp, the only difference is that it is not a potentiometer, but a switch that you can select 25%, 50% or 100% power. Now try disconecting the internal speaker and plugging the amp into a 4x12 cab. HUGE sound!!! Great video! Cheers, mate!

A partial copy and paste from the Peavey forum thread "History and Timeline of the Peavey Bandit": Solo Series Bandit 112 (1989-1995) The Solo Series Bandit 112 introduced many new features, the most notable being an increase in power to 80 watts RMS and a choice between Peavey's Scorpion speaker and Peavey's newly introduced Sheffield speaker. Many of the innovations that would later be branded as "Transtube" were included in the Solo Series Bandit 112, but the name "Transtube" had not been adopted yet. There have been several different versions of the Solo Series Bandit 112 but they all share the same manual and the same control layout. One of the more popular variations is known as the "Teal Stripe" or "Blue Stripe" Bandit due to a blue horizontal stripe below the control panel. The Solo Series Bandit 112 was made in Meridian MS USA. Transtube Series Bandit 112 (1995-1999) The Transtube Series Bandit 112 formally introduced Peavey's proprietary "Transtube" technology that allows a solid state amplifier to perform more like a vacuum tube amplifier. Central to the Transtube concept is a patented "power brake" that allows the user to control the amount of power required for dynamic range compression from the power amp, from 100% all the way down to 10%, thus enabling the amplifier to acheive power amp compression without running at full volume. The Transtube Series Bandit 112 was made in Meridian MS USA and came stock with the Sheffield 1230 speaker. Notably, it was also the first Bandit to have an external speaker jack, allowing external speakers to be run instead of or in parallel with the internal speaker. Running into 8 ohms, power is still 80 watts RMS, but running into 4 ohms (the equivalent of using the internal 8 ohm speaker together with an 8 ohm extension speaker) the power is increased to 100 watts RMS. Due to the horizontal strip of chrome underneath the controls, this version is commonly referred to as the "Silver Stripe" Bandit, but due to the black color and square shape, it is sometimes called the "Blackbox" Bandit (not to be confused with "Blackface", which refers to F*nder products and/or performances in the style of Al Jolson...) Transtube Series II Bandit 112 Made in USA (2000-2004) With the Transtube Series II, the metal corners and input jacks that had been standard on all Peavey Bandits up until this time were replaced by plastic corners and plastic jacks. Due to a color scheme incorporating a red stripe across the front of the amplifier, many people refer to the Transtube Series II Bandit as the "Redstripe Bandit". During this time Peavey attempted to adopt a new company logo, and moved away from their traditional "pointy" logo. The new logo came to be known as the "Block Logo". The Block Logo was only used for a limited period of time, and the Block Logo Redstripe Bandits represent the last Peavey Bandits to be made in the USA. Transtube Series II Bandit 112 Made in China (2004-2005) This amp is cosmetically nearly identical to the USA version, so it is also referred to as "Redstripe Bandit", but there are several differences between the US built Redstripes and the Chinese ones. First, the Chinese version says, "Designed in the USA" on the front, while the actual USA version says "Designed and Made in the USA". Second, the speaker in the Chinese version is either unlabelled, or is labelled "Blue Marvel", a Peavey code for speakers made outside of Peavey and then rebranded as Peavey. All of the USA Redstripe Bandits shipped from the factory with US made Sheffield 1230 speakers. Another obvious difference is that all Chinese Redstripe Bandits have the "pointy logo", while most - but not all - of the USA Redstripe Bandits shipped with Block Logos. Peavey Bandit with Transtube Technology (2006-current) The current version of the Bandit is made in China. It is the first Bandit to incorporate a "simulated output" for recording purposes. This simulated output runs independently of the amp's internal speaker, allowing silent recording. The simulated output can also be used instead of or in addition to a traditional microphone. In this version the spring reverb has been replaced by a digital reverb circuit, and the 10% to 100% T. Dynamics knob is replaced by a 3-way switch, allowing operation at 25%, 50%, and 100% power. Metal corners are reintroduced, but the footswitch is no longer included with the amp and must be purchased separately.

I bought a silver stripe 3 years ago for $150 Canadian, best amp I've ever owned. This amp is crazy loud, so I use the low gain input with my humbucker guitars - it is more dynamic and has less background hiss on low gain input. I set the T. Dynamics knob at 50% or less for nice breakup. The distortion channel is usable, but you have to go easy on the preamp gain to avoid fizz.

I might also add if no one else has, plug the Bandit 112 into an external cabinet and you gain an extra 20 watts of power, not to mention more cones moving air around. I've owned one of these for almost 20 years, and the only problem I've ever had with it was dirty pots. It was my main amp until my bandmates convinced me a single speaker wasn't cutting it and I needed a 2x12 (I ended up borrowing our drummer's Vox AC30 and eventually bought a Line 6 DuoVerb 212 while the Bandit got mothballed for a while). I pulled the Bandit out the other night, finally sprayed the pots with WD-40, and it sprang back to life immediately. I'm sooo happy I never sold it. The DuoVerb is very very nice but the Bandit is I daresay a "real" amp. Find one cheap, use the hell out of it, and you'll be a very happy guitarist.
