Since I have my buddy Danny’s 5150II on loan after a checkup from our local tech, I figured I’d A/B them and see just how close they are.
TL:DR, the Block Letter has more gain sooner in the pre-gain sweep, and also is a lot darker and muddier in tone. Other than that they’re very similarly voiced and equally great

The 5150ii's mids are focused higher thus it doesn't have the slightly muffled tone of the original.

Man. That was brutal. I'm between evh 50w III Stealth and 6505+. I thought that EVH is the choice, but prices are ridiculous now (I won't how long). So l starter to look at 6505+ as a way cheaper solution.

If you go with a 6505+, please make sure and buy a pre-2015 Made in USA. The quality control on the Chinese ones has been nothing short of horrible

I do prefer the extra low grunt of the OG but that's just me. On a side note, the SD1 bridges the gap between the two even more.

@@Padreblue11 S'all good man. No worries, I'm on about the Boss SD1/Super Overdrive. Gives it a nice and gnarly upper mid spike, as well as a cutting off more lows than your avarage green boi.

Thanks man! The 5153 was a loaner. It was a lot tighter gain wise but had less low end boom, even with the resonance mod

@@Padreblue11interesting. Would you say it's worth it if you have the 6505 and 6505+? They used the 5150iii on tbdm deflorate album and I've always thought it was a unique sound. Not quite 5150 territory, but a bit more polished.

Great video. Really shows the tone differences between these two heads. Block letter has more balls and the 2 is more scooped and articulate

There's a strong low mid in the 5150II that just makes it feel more muffled. I love the clarity of the original.

@@okaight7248What you observed is, oddly enough, literally the other way around. The II is tighter on the low end and has more upper-mid pronunciation, which makes it marginally better for the mix, not they the original can’t more than get the job done.

@@jhonpasquez6145 I figured, and the 5150’s clean isn’t bad. It’s just very dry. The II’s is more versatile since it has a seperate EQ. Throw a reverb, chorus (boss CE-2) and maybe a delay and the cleans are fine

@@jhonpasquez6145 yeah after 2015 peavey heads moved production to China. Easiest way to tell is they’ll say Made in China on the back. Though all 5150/5150IIs are USA made. 6505/6505+s are USA until 2015
