Established in 2019 this is New Mexico’s newest state park. A little primitive now, but plans are to make updates such as fire rings, tables and maybe electric and water as well.
In my backyard now, but 50 years ago we camped here on the ground no tent. We walked up that hill you filmed to the north, we happened upon a recent deer kill so we decided to head back to camp after circling around the trees where the kill was we came around to our initial path, we noticed bear tracks on top of our tracks; I was armed with a six shot .22 mag revolver which would have only made that bear more angry so we put it in high gear and got back to camp: bear in the area be careful!
Great video. We are heading down to New Mexico next week. No reservations, so it will be fun to find new places. This place looks awesome. I love to fish so pole is coming with.
We camped in Chama last September, thinking maybe go back or look for something else, I haven’t done camping without hook ups at least electric and water
@@triplejsadventures4896 we stayed at Rio Chama for 3 1/2 weeks it’s a hard drive from Lubbock my daughter won’t drive at all so if we go need to stop somewhere stay the night if you have any suggestions please let me know. Such a beautiful camp ground our dog loved it she watch the chipmunk made sure they were all secured at night.
So sad to see this. As a kid we would go every summer and it looked allot better undeveloped. Uncle Sam has to get you everywhere you go including our “Public Land”.
Yeah, I love camping on public land. The sad thing is that over the the last few years people haven’t been taking care of it and ruining the experience for the rest of us.
Great video, as usual. I had no idea that there was another section to the state park campgrounds there. The two down by Terrero look like nothing but parking lots and didnt appeal to us at all. This one definitely needs some upgrades, no privacy between sites so you see and hear everything but maybe they will fix that as well as adding tables and fire rings. Thanks again!
Yea, I spoke to the Ranger too and he went into a little more detail about the upgrades but it’s a five year plan. Hopefully once it’s done all three will be a lot nicer. But yea the first two aren’t my favorites either. Thanks and take care!!!

We were.there as well. First campers in the new park. The park service did what they could with the area. Glass all over and fire.rings by the ton to get rid of. The graffiti at the north end and the freaking cross. The covid stopped.them from ope ing. There are no sites for much more.than cars.camping. uneven etc. I hope they are able to get it done. Wildlife had it and turned it over to the state and the locals destroyed the place.
Yeah I remember how it used to be before the state took over but when we were there the state had done quite a good job in cleaning it up. The rangers were in and out all the time checking on things and in speaking to them, they said there was even plans of bringing in electricity. But we haven’t been back since then so not sure what, if anything has changed. Some time soon though I hope. Thanks for watching. Have a great day!
Mora was our favorite campsite for years. I was in Pecos fishing last weekend and wow, it looks like sh.t now that they have turned it into a pay zone, moved the boulders to limit vehicle access to one way in and that same way out. It is ridiculous what the government is willing to destroy for a dollar.
Will have to take your word for it, we never camped there until it was a SP. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would visit again. That whole area is beautiful.
Hello Tiffany, while at this campground we brought water in 5 gallon refillable jugs. That’s what we usually do dry camping. As far as dumping our tanks we used a free dump station close to our home. However Santa Fe is 20/30 or so miles away and has places to dump. Hopefully soon the Park will add one but at the time we were there, they did not have one.
The road to Morphy Lake is steep and the website says no RVs above 18 ft. Pendaries RV resort is in the area and was nice when we stayed there(check out our video on it if you would like). Storrie Lake and Coyote Creek State Parks aren’t too far off. Also be aware last year the Hermits Peak fire damaged a lot of this area. Happy Travels!!
Hello, at this campground I would suggest reaching out to the New Mexico State Parks. But there are other NF campgrounds in the area where you could tent camp. Dispersed areas as well.
It is an old BLM campground which wasn’t well cared for over the years. NM State Parks recently took over so plans are to make improvements such as utilities. The area is beautiful and it sits along a small river with some good fishing. We definitely enjoyed our stay.
