Learn more about the Pediatric Surgical Program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin: bit.ly/1mBJgvF In this video, learn about pectus excavatum from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, including the Ravitch and Nuss Procedures.
I had a Pectus surgery, in fact I had three surgeries, between the age of 5 and 7. This was from 1972 to 1974 in Germany. The surgeries were extremely traumatic back then. After the first surgery I fell into a coma for 10 days. Back then the doctors didn't know so much about the psychology of children. I was put in a room completely alone and my parents could only visit me behind a wall of glass. They had to speak through a telephone to me, but as a 5 year old child I didn't really know what to say... I don't know what caused more trauma: to be a girl with a Pectus or to have to live through endless weeks in the hospital under these horrific circumstances. I could never trust my parents after the long time I have spend in the hospital. I felt completely betrayed by my family. Thank God nowadays children are not treated like this anymore and the Pectus surgery is much better nowadays.
thank God for Children's hospital as they performed surgery on our son's chest after he survived cancer. We were all terrified, but everything was OK. His holler index was severe at 6.25 and required 2 bars. They saved his life 2 times!!!
It depends on the person. Everyone reacts differently to the surgery. In my case, I've had huge amounts of luck and haven't gotten any complications of any type. My recovery has been excellent and quick and I haven't felt the extreme pain everyone loves to talk about. It only hurt when I got out of the surgery. After that (with good medications, of course) the pain was nothing. And, after the first 15 days, I stopped needing the medicines. Maybe it's because I'm young (I'm 20).
I was doing super well after the surgery. Pain was very easy to deal with just up until I set myself back and didn’t follow the parameters they gave me and I injured a lot of my muscles and incisions keep getting infected
My name is Vijay Tigura. I am 40-years-old and have been suffering all my life with a painful condition due to a congenital narrow and deformed rib cage. My ribcage deformity is summarized as follows: 1) My ribcage is very narrow. 2) My ribs from 3-11 are deform, more curved inwards and pushed forward which creates an abnormally narrow and barrel-shaped ribcage. 3) My lower ribs (8,9,10,11) are even more curved inwards create what is called a rib flare. 4) This condition reduces my abdominal cavity thus compressing my stomach, liver, spleen and intestines. 5) The result of these abnormalities affects my whole bodily posture. Symptoms and Difficulties This rare bone condition causes me severe pain, discomfort and tightness in my abdominal and thoracic region as follows: 1) Traumatic pain in all my ribs, front and back. 2) It also causes pain in my spinal cord radiating through to my shoulder blades and arms. 3) My stomach, spleen, liver and intestines are being congested causing severe pain in my internal organs. 4) My body posture is severely affected making it difficult when sitting because I don’t get the proper spinal support that I should naturally. 5) When I lie down on my back, I don’t get enough support from my ribs and spine because my ribs are pushed forward negating the natural position necessary for comfort. 6) This condition severely affects my balance because my rib-shape forces my stomach and intestines forward and places extra stress on my spinal cord. 7) As you can imagine, having suffered with these stressful and painful conditions all my life, I have had to struggle with mental stress and depression as well. I am reaching out for help. I am looking for a doctor who can flatten and widen my whole rib cage. Ria, we understand how someone can feel helpless when confronted with a medical condition that they have little control over. We recommend that you talk to your doctor right away about how you are feeling so you can get the help you need. We wish you all the best. Please take care. - Korre
The patient was really taken good care of. I doubt most hostpitals would do the same.... But regarding the risks involved, has it REALLY ever been that serious? Like damage to organs, fluid outside lungs, collapse, etc?
did you have severe pectus? mine isn't too bad but it was enough for me to be med discharged from marines. What did you say to doctor to have them OK you for surgury? shortness of breath? that kinda stuff?
its hard to say brother, i have pectus and im an mma fighter we train extremely hard and cardio is key in our sports and in many others as well Ive notice how quickly i get tired and i can barely keep up with my teammates especially in long distance sprints i try my hardest to keep pushing but my body feels likes its shuting down (from the lungs mostly) i feel like i only get have breathes i really hope i get this out the way a fallow my dream, and i pray i will be able to fight again.
I live in the Caribbean, Trinidad & Tobago most doctors here are not familiar with PE and I don't want surgery cause am afraid of the pain. (lol) but I'm trying to raise awareness and the company I work for is really helpful as they bring in all the hospital equipment and they are willing to have doctors trained to do surgery here for those who want it done. But for those who don't like me exercise really helps improves your PE

I was operated with nurse procedure and I had bar inside me less than 2 years, probably because I didn't had that big Haller index. My age when first surgery was 13/14 and second surgery 15/16. If you have question, you can ask me.
Ut Hoang I’m not to sure about how much it is but you can 100% have it at that age some people even have it in there 30/40 if it is impacting there health. I’m 1 month post op and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made
Ut Hoang The older you are, generally the more time to recover. I got it when I was 18. I’m 3 years post op and honestly it may not be perfect, but it is so much better than it was. Plus I’m finally getting into shape and that can help the appearance post op as well. If you have the opportunity to have it done, do it. The pain is worth it IMO.
Ut Hoang Also, I need to mention I had the Ravitch Procedure which is pretty much an entire chest reconstruction from what I understood. Still had a bar but got it taken out after 6 months
It is usually implanted in the teenage years but can be implanted in adult years as well, metal bars usually stay in for 2-4 years depending on age and severity and then are removed.
I have this problem, not sure about index. I don't have pain but shortness of breath. I want to know if this condition also affects mental i suffer with brain Fogg. My span of attention is very low.
ive just done this operation, is it normal to feel things are a bit bumpy and twisting when I move, in the area where the metal bar is?, it doesn't hurt but its extremely uncomfortable.
I play football and I have this indent in my chest. It stops me from being able to sprint for very long. I had a heart monitor for two weeks, and I sent in my results two weeks ago, but I haven't heard anything since, how long will it take? Also, can I still play football after?
I am 13 years old and I have this. But my case seems to continue to the left of my sternum? Like a dent from the middle to the left, basically goes over my heart. But I am very athletic. What is my condition about?? Please answer.
If I had any idea that the surgeons could possibly be lifting me up by the actual bar like they do to this paxient at 2:40 and generally manhandling the paxient and the surgical equipment like a ragdoll and modifying a piece of metal already in the chest cavity (I was told that the bar the put into me was customized to the dimensions of my body ahead of time) there's nooo way I would have undergone the nuss procedure. Not to say I don't know this for sure, it turns out that there are multiple methods by which to perform the nuss procedure. Different ways to modify what is really a very pliable sternum, but all with something that looks like the same end result, so the surgeons can operate as they think best, but not necessarily as they might tell you and from a variety of opxions that can be viewed on youtube. Point is, be extremely careful dealing with your doctor, espexially if your surgery's being paid for thru something like medicare, because then you'll get a doctor who isn't all that experienced, and simply won't try to give you the best of results. Like the difference between 1st class and the cargo space for dogs and birds in a plane's hull, except you're letting this guy modify your physical being in ways that will have repercuxions thru the rest of ur life (noo offense to dogs, if I had a dog of my own, I'd never fly or take a bus or whatever without him right with me.) , for better or worse. I don't have anything personally against Dr Jacobs, but a year after having the bar removed I still have trouble breathing, headaches, and just a great jolly time with my pectus excavutum carinated rigid and not expanding with my lungs chest.
james hartman it is better to get it taken care of.. After surgery you will have heal for 3 years. You will have bars that are put in and removed in 3 years. There are certian ways to get out of bed and exercising. My grandson just had this done in November he had it done Mayo clinic in Arizona. There is an awesome Doctor who specializes in this she is great. She does not do the ravage she does laparoscopic and you heal faster. it takes time to heal at least 6 weeks especially with medication you are monitored. Hope this helps with answers. Please look gor a Good Doctor that knows a lot about his surgery, I would advice Mayo in Arizona. My grandson He lived in Baltimore. My grandson did a lot of research on the Doctor. Good Luck👱🏻♀️
Anna Holmes My son is 11 and was just told he has Pectus but we need to see a pediatric surgeon next. I’m worried about him and how his body is going to change and how that will affect him. He plays flag football and loves sports. How old was your grandson when he had the surgery?
26:53 ?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How in the WORLD did he get up by himself during the first days?!?!?! I had my surgery a month ago and I still can't move an INCH when I try to get up!!!
CarlosC how where you when you ahd it done? And how does it look now?? Hope you see this. Just a mom concerned about her kid that might be facing this. Thank you.
im 17 my life has just been ruined as they said i have a sternum abnormality but mine is literally nothing but i have so much pain when exercising and at rest e.g. heart pain, neck, jaw and arms. they said they can not do anything. so my career is over i literally feel like dieying!!!
I really am upset about this, I like messing around with my friends and playing football and wrestling and tackling my friends. If I get the surgery, for 3 years my life will suck! I get the whole point it will help the long run but I’m 16 and when I’m in college I’ll get the bar out. High school is supposed to be the best years of our lives. If I were to ever get into a fight, I couldn’t risk it. I was even going to do boxing. But over all, I really just am losing hope here, I feel like my life will be so limed.
Life gets so much better after high school buddy, trust me, I had the procedure at age 28, with a wife and two children. It’s so much harder getting this surgery as an adult. If you’re able to, I highly recommend you get this procedure by an experienced specialist as soon as possible. My Pectus never bothered me that much in high school but got significantly worse as I got older. Good luck buddy
Hello. Are you having the surgery? I am.... Im kinda scared and would enjoy talking about it to somebody, who´s gonna have it too. if you wanna talk about it, tell me and ill share my email and we can talk. :)
@@thewhiteman02 if your young just know that this is the case most of the time, but it usually always gets progressively worse as you get older. Just a thought. I got my procedure at age 28 and wish I would’ve gotten it done as a teenager
