I’ve watched the Netflix documentary. Not only is the subject an unlikeable egotistical narcissist, but several things in this film suggest to me that he did not ride anything like as far as he claims. His bike seems to always be clean and he has very few mechanical problems. Even at the end his panniers look like new, not torn up or beaten up, nor faded from the sun. He doesn’t seem very tanned, and his skin looks fresh at the end, not as if he’d been out in the sun for a year (despite not wearing gloves or a sun hat much). He doesn’t seem to lose any weight and his clothes always seem clean. He complains a lot, but never about saddle sores/blisters/sunburn/cramps as you would expect. We never see him really suffer on the bike. Most people after a long cycling touring trip look they’ve come back from a war zone. There are also large sections of the trip that we never see. I would like to see his Garmin files!
I agree with you totally, I cycled the river Nile from base to source(from Alexandria-Egypt to Bahir Dar-Ethiopia ) ,lost weight ,got even more darker!!,my hairy legs cursed me for 2 month, sore bum,new chain , cassette and tyres!!!!

In my opinion the trailer is much better than the documentary itself. A kid from Germany is trying to find the meaning of life through a journey by bicycle. Unfortunately the documentary lacks any deepness and it is a sequence of his feelings regarding the weather, the roads and the landscapes he goes through. He is too much into himself, and it seems he is using people along the way, including his girlfriend, to enrich the product. While technology provides every millennial the chance to record their own clip, it doesn't provide the skills to write a good scrip or perform in front of the camera, and the result doesn't work, even though he replicated the formula of "Into the wild" motion picture. One piece of advice: boy, if you appreciate your life, wear a helmet and do not record on busy roads!
The movie is watchable bit he's so young and into HIMSELF. He "gets annoyed" with two co-pilots and they have to go. Then he hooks up with his beloved and she doesn't speak a word and he barely mentions her. Idk what an appelkid is but he probably is one.
Great Indy Doc adventure film. Very well edited from a lot of recording. He later, with a girl friend, made another documentary film "Expedition Happiness" when they turned a school bus into an RV and traveled, with their dog, thru Canada, America, and Mexico. You feel like you were there with them, and want to go on forever. I watched both of these wonderful films on Netflix. This is not an ad. I just wanted to share my enthusiasm for travel on a shoestring.
I'm sure he's a nice guy, but this man is very self-involved. He might be okay to talk to in 2025 (once he's a bit more rounded) but until then his experiences are likely to be more about him than anything else. I've been everywhere he has so can talk you through it all from my viewpoint, although I was there a damn sight earlier, so arguably mine would be more interesting!!

Ich würde mir den Film nicht nochmal kaufen. Gefühlte 90% des Videos sind solche Aufnahmen wie im vorliegenden Trailer. Die Kamera ist quasi immer auf den Protagonisten gerichtet und kaum auf seine Umwelt. Gnadenlose Selbstinszenierung - man sieht, wie Felix immer wieder mit sich selbst kämpft und wie er sich immer wieder feiert. Dabei kommen Mitreisende (ausser Fynn) gar nicht zu Wort. Die persönlichen Fazite, die Felix aus der Reise zieht, wirken schal, wenn nicht sogar aufgemacht. Ab und zu erzählt Felix, dass ihn die ein oder andere Begegnung veränder habe. Aber nicht wie und warum. Mein Fazit: Ein Film mit bestechend schönen Bildern, der sich jedoch inhaltlich nur sehr oberflächlich mit dem Protagonisten befasst. Ohne jeglichen Tiefgang.
I watched the whole documentary on Netflix. First, let me say that Felix had to get professional advice before he set out on his adventure. He had very nice panniers in the front and back of the bike. He knew to put Schwalbe Marathon tires on his rims, which provide extra layers of rubber to protect against flats. He also knew to ride a Giant bike specifically made for carrying heavy gear. I tried to find out what model that bike was on Giant USA's website, but it wasn't on there. Also, while Felix may have went around the world by bike and took film clips of himself, there had to be a professional camera crew to film his ride, and edit it. There was no way he was going to film the whole documentary and pedal the world on his own. It's safe to say that Felix had to either have a rich family for him to buy the bike and all of that gear, or he had a Go Fund Me page, or did fundraising on his own. And for him to pedal for a year, I assume he didn't have a job and he lived with his mom and dad. His decision not to wear a helmet, nor the proper cycling clothes, and pedal mostly with sandals, shows he really is an ubseasoned cyclist. I did enjoy the documentary, and I'm sure you will too, but just be aware that it is edited and condensed heavily.
Ron Ralph totally agree however disagree with the filming part, from my experiences, he used unstabilised gear and a camera like the Sony RX100 to get most of the shots in the movie, with a gopro type wideangle as a second camera a bigger dslr would have made it very hard to make some of the shots where he's riding and holding the camera
@@user-ut8gh7ww9y Have you ever tried doing something like this with your mates for weeks at a time? You end up at each others' throats no matter how like-minded you think you are at the start. It's not about open-mindedness. It's just that most of us are used to doing things our own way in this rather individualistic modern age, and that doesn't transfer well to camping and travelling together for a long time. If you have managed to do this with a friend for a long period of time then consider yourself very lucky.

To all who don't know - this 12 000 Euro Felix had for this journey come from saving it over years and also - whats more important in my opinion because it's brave to do - he sold everything he got. Just everything. His appartement, the furniture, the car, his coffee machine. Okay to be fair, he got sponsored by some companies like some practical devices and I think also his bike. But that was just by asking them. So he's not, as some of you maybe think, some spoiled boy who just got the cash from his parents or something. A movie worth watching! watched it yesterday in Cologne and Felix was there too to answer questions and so on. Very humble and charismatic guy! Gave me the courage to try something like this myself

Hallo Felix, toller Film über eine spannende Reise. Hat mir echt gut gefallen, wie Du die unterschiedlichen Stationen, aber auch Höhen und Tiefen beschrieben hast. Und ist doch toll, wenn Radfahren etwas populärer wird!

Mira Mireau Naja, ich gebe dir recht, sollte es der Traum einer Frau sein, das wirklich zu machen , so sollte man den Gedanke nicht gleich verwerfen, blos weil man eine Frau ist, jedoch sollte man sich gründlich Gedanken machen, da zumindest hat Vince recht. Eine solche Reise ist weder für Männer noch für Frauen ein 'Zuckerschlecken', sondern vielmehr eine Herausforderung. Wobei es teilweise bestimmt eine schöne Art des Lebens ist. Fakt ist jedoch auch, das Frauen sich besser vorbereiten müssen als Männer und damit mein ich nicht nur Pfefferspray und Angriffe in die Weichteile. Wenigstens ein Kurs zur Selbstverteiding sollte vorher in Angriff genommen werden, da, und das ist auch ein Fakt, Frauen nunmal leichter Opfer wolllüstiger Männer werden. Ich kann verstehen, dass du dich über die Bemerkung 'Du als Frau' aufregst, aber hat er doch, wenn auch nicht grad in Baumwolle eingewickelt eine zum großen Teil richtige Aussage getroffen. Bei einem solchen Unterfangen kommt der Mensch an seine Grenzen, ob Mann oder Frau, wobei es die Frauen schwerer haben, betrachtet man allein die Statur und den Muskelaufbau...
Ich gebe dir bei jedem deiner Sätze voll und ganz recht. Ich habe selbst auf Reisen schon Schlimmes erlebt und das aus dem einzigen Grund heraus, dass ich eine Frau bin. Dennoch hat es meiner Auffassung nach, nicht danach geklungen ihr zu empfehlen sich besser vorzubereiten (und ja das muss eine Frau leider wirklich) , viel eher klang es für mich danach, dass sie als Frau zu naiv sei, um zu wissen worauf sie sich einlasse, denken würde alles mit einem Lächeln (sprich mit ihrem Aussehen) klären zu können und einfach mal naiv "ich will auch" schreien würde...Diese Ansicht hat er, so wie ich denke, einzig und allein, weil sie eine Frau ist und das finde ich einfach nicht in Ordnung. Deine Meinung und Ratschläge kann ich hingegen voll und ganz nachvollziehen und nach vielen Jahren alleine auf Reise bestätigen.
This documentary is so fishy, just one example : he says that Anselm spontaneously joins him for the trip and than at 21:14 watch closely: they have the exact same red/black bags! Does look super planned and coordinated to me and def not like a spontaneous come together. It is a pitty that most of the time you just see the face of this guy instead of the landscapes and nature around. After a while this becomes really painful. I kept watching until the end because I hoped for some meaning or insight at the end: but nope! Sitenote: I really do wonder what sunscreen this dude is using. I hiked Spain for one month and was super tanned after only 30 days, my clothes were super dusty & dirty, not sure how he managed to stay so clean after 365 days on a bike 😜 At the end he says that he has now friends in 22 countries but you don't see a single friendship encounter in the whole film. Weird! Me me me & my ego cycle trip.
100 % agree. He did not get affected by Sun significantly cause He stopped the Trip swcwral Times and went back home due to medical issues. It was basixally few weeks bike holiday in several coutrnies in one year. Absolutely ridiculous, and disgusting

Also ich war bei der Premiere und da hat er ja auch deutlich gesagt das er die Tür (ich glaube) 2 mal abgebrochen hat wegen Krankheit. Und Ich glaube auch weite Strecken nicht mit dem Rad zurückgelegt hat. Fand den Film jetzt nicht schlecht, man hat aber stark gemerkt das "das Hipster" Gefasel schon ziemlich ausgeweitet wird. Fazit Hätte man besser machen können. Aber Geld bleibt Geld und Geld ist kacke neh? :D
Sorry, but PTW is bad shit, I saw it yesterday and nobody knows whether this all really got to life - or it's a big fake and only a Money-Maker on costs of all the belivers!Starck gives no proof at all that this all has happened to him following the plot, all co-drivers were eliminated before theyactually could take part in the film-action. He also says he is not positive for taking planes but who knows?? You easily can produce flanked by this lack of quality by getting to all the places in a month! I think the whole movie is a big fake ... and on top, pretty boaring, too. Paul

Marketing.....I saw it on Facebook in a link from Mashable........the "trailer" has an awesome track to accompany it (from a great indy band called Daughter).......the trailer says alot in a little time......do you have any other bicycle touring videos to recommend? I like watching them!

What could have been a great doc ended up being a predictable and beyond boring film. I was naive to jump into it without checking the ratings first. It's just an extended Banana Pancake Trail. Hopefully his film will inspire others to make something more... should I say... palatable?

Leider ein Film über ein neureiches Kind, dass vorgibt mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs zu sein, aber die meisten Strecken im Flugzeug verbringt. Nicht nur seine flachen Aussagen sondern auch das extreme Marketing machen ihn extremste unsympathisch. Es gibt viele nicht genügend beworbene aber wesentlich bessere Filme von Menschen, die dieses Abenteuer wirklich gewagt haben.

+Blake Gray Lies dir einfach mal verschiedene Berichte über seinen Film durch. Von Beginn an hatte er zig Sponsoren und Marketingagenturen hinter sich. Verkauft nun seinen Film (der an sich wirklich gute Bilder hat) für 20€ weiter. Es ging bei der Reise von vorn herein nur ums Geld. Dass er ein Großteil geflogen ist, finde ich jetzt nicht wirklich dramatisch.

+tawkir Ahmed I was only joking. He is german and believe me or not its quite easy to get a tourist visa in most countries. Even in North Korea 🙈 Depending on your origin it can be more difficult. Planning way ahead is key.

Dieser Film war ja wohl eine einzige Frechheit. Da wurde wohl versucht an die Erfolgswelle von Paul und Hansen Hoepker anzuknöpfen - und scheitert jämmerlich. Zum großen Teil wird man mit unscharfen Selfies konfrontiert, im Prinzip ein schlecht gedrehtes Urlaubsvideo, kaum Fahrrad Sequenzen, stattdessen viele gut gemeinte Impressionen, die jeder Pauschaltourist besser einfangen könnte. Ein Grundkurs im Umgang mit dem Camcorder wäre vielleicht hilfreich gewesen. Normalerweise wird solches Material in der Postproduction noch etwas optimiert - aber nicht mal dafür hat man sich die Mühe gemacht. Natürlich, ein Amateur Film (schlimm genug, dass sowas im Kinoformat präsentiert wird), aber das geht auch für Amateure besser, youtube ist voll von Leuten die es besser machen... Felix Starck lies es sich leider auch nicht nehmen das Voice Over selbst zu übernehmen, soll wohl authentisch wirken geht aber leider nach hinten los. Alles in Allem ein simples Ärgernis, weil man sich nach dem relativ gut inszeniertem Trailer wesentlich mehr versprochen hat. Sorry.
Oh, toll und auf Facebook wird jede negative Kritik an seinem Film gleich gelöscht, was bleibt sind die eingekauften likes seiner Freunde. Wenn man sich schon so in die Öffentlichkeit stellt muss man auch mit Kritik umgehen können. Das geht ja nicht gegen ihn persönlich, mag ja ein netter Kerl sein und hat sicherlich eine starke sportliche Leistung abgeliefert. Aber derartige Zensur macht's nur noch schlimmer...

You cannot generalize , he payed most for flights and accomodations , but if youre unlucky you will also pay much for doctors, medicine, new equipment, road fees etc. Conclusio: A Trip like this is expensive, but if you stay within Europe or Africa, it can be much cheaper
Ich musste nach einer Weile abbrechen... zu wenig Tiefgang und zu viel Selbstmitleid (man merkt, dass er bisher nur auf der Sonnenseite des Lebens geradelt ist), gepaart mit schlechter Dramaturgie... es hat einfach keinen Spass gemacht! Ich muss mich schon wunder, dass eine Produktion von so schlechter Qualität überhaupt in die Kinos gekommen ist.
What a shameless piece of self-promotion and self-pity this documentary is. "Pedal The world"? "Pedal The World's Tourist Spots While Complaining All The Time And Completely Ignoring My Travel Companions" would've been more apt. No wonder they've all deserted him. His entire narcissist attitude is brilliantly displayed by the many 360-degree-shots, where the screen is mostly occupied by his own face rather than the surrounding area. How is this still on Netflix and was even shown on German national TV, I wonder...
