Try putting the HOF after de Carbon Copy, sounds cleaner and more natural, reverb should be the last thing in the chain as a natural reverb takes everything out of your amp and makes it resonate.

It's actually really easy. Solder flows towards heat, tin the connections you're making, and if you heat the connections you should be able to solder no problem. Use Rosin core solder, not acid flux, 60/40 solder is the go to. As far as wattage, anything between 15-35W is what's used for guitars and pedals.

I have never had any issues with solder-less cables. Simple logic, if they didn't work the big companies couldn't sell them without bad press. Like any cable you just need to test as you go. Some people are just very old school I guess.

A point to consider in the "get your sound from your amp and guitar" is that when touring, there are backline amps to deal with. Vastly different styles of amps, wattages etc. Having a few options when it comes to gain, eq etc. becomes more of an urgent need.

I see all of these custom boards on Facebook with 20 pedals on them and can't understand why would you need so many? Surely too many takes away something from your basic sound? When I was a pro, I had a ts-9 (then a homemade treble booster) with a boss chorus, an old delay and reverb into the loop of my dsl 2000. That was more than enough and the sound was epic!

I've Decided it is time to make my own for my pedalboard to make it look much nicer as it's a little messy with the pre made patch cables! Also would you be able to tell me where you buy them to. I've been looking around then internet but not sure which brand and what exactly to look for in the cables to know which is the best to buy. Thanks in advance.

Collin hits the nail on the head with regard to patch cables. Whilst everybody seems to be raving over all the nice and fancy lookin "solderless" cables, nothing beats a properly soldered quality cable. I have used the solderless cables some time ago but gone back to properly soldered quality cables. Much more reliable!

no eq pedal? eq pedals relay help in different environment because different room has different absorption of frequencies plus your amp eq is after the distortion. with fuzz I found out if cut 100 hz and below I get nice fuzz tone that has more mids which that my amp could not do because the eq is after distortion.

I think you should definitely get a guitar and amp that gives you a sound you are happy... but I don't think there is anything wrong with getting most of your sound from your board. There are a lot of players that use predominantly clean sounding amps and get the rest of their tone from their pedals. Of course this is genre dependent a bit as well, but it is just a different approach. Overall cool video though and I like the points about the buffers and them being both ibanez
@benmilesrocks

How come you've put your reverb before your delay? I would have thought it'd be a lot smoother sounding to put it at the back so if you turn off your delay you don't kill the reverb trails?

The only thing I don't like about pedal train boards, is that I prefer to keep them in a hard case. I had somebody drop a cab on my custom pedal train style board, in a real pedal train bag, and crushed the switch to my tuner. So for safe keeping, I use a hard case with foam on all sides!

*runs distortion pedals thru solidstate amp that already has a decent cruch channel* I know that it's unnecessary, but I'm just lazy xD (I feel like the pedal gives a better tone anyway). Also, death to true bypass! Literally all of my pedals with the exception of a ditto looper are buffered bypass. Besides, any tonesucking from pedals can easily be compensated for using the settings on the amp.

@deathhockey19

As much as I agree with you saying that if you don't like the amp on its own then All the pedals in the world won't fix that, what's mainly due to the amps mid voicing and character. I do however feel that's there's nothing wrong with having some pedals constantly on for tone shaping. Mainly thinking of overdrives, I love the sound of my evh Stealth, but I very rarely use the dirty channels with one if my drives on, the only time I do is for softer riffs to roll off the volume. I use my drives as a tone shaping tool, a Maxon as a clean boost for tight rhythms and an amptweaker tightdrive pro for screaming leads. Also Reverbs, some people like my brother always have a Reverb on for a natural feel. Same with delay, i always have a delay on when playing cleans. So as much as I love my evh I always have 2 pedals on for my cleans (delay and Reverb) and 3 pedals for my Dirty (drive, gate and Reverb). I personally don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I agree with you on the solderless cables. I know how to solder, but I'm also lazy. So, I went with a pack of the Lava cables; they didn't last 6 months. Maybe I just suck at installing them, but I know a soldered connection won't come undone so easily.
@TheShredMethod

Hey man, good choice of pedals! I run a TS9 tube screamer into an ENGL modern rock pre-amp then through the front of a Vox AC30. The TS9 seems to get me pretty close to my favourite lead tone with whatever amp I plug into, they're good ae! Thanks for showing us your pedals!
@b.scottfarthingsworth
@b.scottfarthingsworth 7 лет назад
Great video as always, and I agree with all your choices! Except cable type. In 1980 I got my first amp, and I wanted the most high end cable available. They sold me the stuff that later became named George L's. I had that cable for 10 years no problems. Whenever I had to use someone else's cable it sounded horrible, dull, and dark. But that one 20' cable disappeared and I went back to regular self soldered cables. Got away from those solder-less cables because they became expensive, I couldn't afford them for my racks and pedals. After many years of soldered cable, about 7 years ago I decided to go with them for my rack, and what a difference. The tone just is better. It is VERY easy to notice the difference. I even experimented by surprising the band without telling them of redoing my pedalboard setup. So without a word, I shit you not- that night 2 of them asked me what I did different because it sounds so good. I'm never going back. I'm in NY, and all the cats here have the same cables. We all love 'em. When you do the cable ends properly, there's never a problem. Gig heavily and no issues. Easy to install and if I ever need to trouble shoot at a gig (never needed to yet)

@MacintoshPlus1MB
@MacintoshPlus1MB 7 лет назад
No, unless you get their new 1Spot Pro isolated output power supply. If you just get a regular $20 one spot and daisy chain a bunch of pedals together, you're gonna have issues with noise. Get the 1-Spot Pro, Fuel Tank Jr. or a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power, and avoid cheap isolated output boxes from ebay that aren't truly isolated.

@TheCrimsonIdol987
@TheCrimsonIdol987 7 лет назад
It is true bypass, according to the designer of the pedal, Jeorge Tripps. To quote him directly, "As you can see... when the unit is in bypass... the input jack goes to the output jack...WITH NO CIRCUIT CONNECTED TO IT! That's called True Bypass...True Hardwire Bypass... or whatever the hell you want to call it." Yes, it is true bypass.
@karniboy6549
@karniboy6549 7 лет назад
Weird ...how come that and the other MXR pedals I have don't let any signal through when the power is disconnected?
@TheCrimsonIdol987
@TheCrimsonIdol987 7 лет назад
Dunlop/MXR is fickle, anything labeled with "True Hardware Bypass," is basically what true bypass is, and "True Hardwired Bypass," is a buffered bypass. Don't ask me why they decided to do that, but that's the way it is. I have the delay and it sounds good, and that should be the deciding factor though.

Personally I think that what's great to have is a tube screamer for general distortion and kinda leave it on for distortion I'm songs that need clean tones or just leave it on and separately have a either distortion or overdrive pedal with not much distortion or overdrive but one is quite loud so you use that for solos so then the tube screamer makes part of your tone and then have amp distortion to a point where turning all other distortions of will leave it quite week and if you lick out notes it will sound clean

Im using amphenol cables for the most part and have fender minis on the pedal rack.. im of a mind now to make or at least buy some custom links for my board. .. another question perhaps? both my amps have tube effect loops and im wondering how to best dedicate that to a 2 set off rack just for reverb and delay.. any thoughts appreciated. cheers !
