Welcome to a feature packed video on my thoughts on a basic rockabilly guitar setup to get that sound. What pedals do you need? Well I’ll show you the basics, and what I take with me on tour covering Scotty Moore, Luther Perkins, Carl Perkins and more. Can you guess what’s in the box? Stay to the end to find out, (and see me make a fool of myself stacking the box) PLUS I play part of one of my upcoming transcriptions which is a ‪@DEATHRAYCAT‬ composition (X Ray Cat Trio) by The loveable El Nico - The Devil’s .. Rag (see link)⬇️

Love the simple setup. Most of the time if I ever played out with a bunch of pedals I always ended up only using 1 or 2 the whole time anyway.

Great vid Adrian, my Rockabilly (and Blues) Rig for home is Gretsch G2420 > Boss TR 2 Tremolo > Boss DD-3 Digital Delay > Orange Crush 12 Amp which has an overdrive pedal built in. I tend to play songs where effects are always on or always off so no need to tap pedals or turn knobs mid song. Keep on rocking and Cheers from Portland, Maine USA

Love it. I'm all about simple setups. Hell I've rewired most of my guitars to have just a single volume and tone knob. If I ever build my dream guitar it will be like Setzer's hotrod, just a volume knob and selector switch. I would have never guessed that you didn't use reverb though- Pretty cool!
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 2 года назад
Hey Brendan, simple is definitely nice! Yeah I just haven’t found it useful live, and given it wasn’t something that was being used built into amps back in the day I think live people really like the clarity and punch in my tone, and I credit that to not washing it out with reverb- like I said, the room will take care of that! I’ve got a video coming out not too far off that has a snippet of me playing live and hopefully the sound captures that! I hope you get your dream guitar sooner rather than later mate!

Hey Jason, my timeline is the one I used for the home made space machine because it gets wild with lo fi delay and stuff, but for straight up sun stuff etc this is my setup - I love delay pedals though, I tend to buy one each year, and I’ve been playing a loooong time lol

@@AdrianWhyte I keep eyeing those Boss delay pedals and they seem like a more straightforward unit to easily get slapback when compared to my MXR carbon copy. Then again, I’m using my Spark amp so much now that I probably don’t need to GAS over pedals. Man, what would the founding fathers of rockabilly think about that?

Hi Guys.. My 2-cents...Yes all Scotty Moore had was a clean Fender Champ in those early Sun records through his Gibson ES295 essentially a Gold es175...Sam Phillips added the slap back through his extra tape head...Nice one Sam...Although at the time of recording Mystery Train He had his newly purchased Super L400...it had Staple magnets p90s if I'm not mistaken so all along he used single coils in the early Elvis Presley Sun records but by that time was using or at least on Mystery Train flat wound strings and his prized Ray Butts Tube Amplifier with built-in tape eko....the tape being around strong speaker magnets and strong current along with tape lag also created a chours effect...But in the end all you need in my opinion is a good clean single coil sound hooked up to a fast single slap back eko and you have it...I use the cleanest amp setting with my favourite slap back pedal a vintage Analogue Ibanez ADL pedal...I have tried many many pedals all do the job...but my favourite one is the ADL because of its softness and no matter how you hear it it always never over does the slap back...set the ADL right ...and you'll think you were using tape...Also Scotty Moore in his last few years was actually seen using a Boss DD3 and a Boss Chours in his chain up to his light weight but useful Peavey Classic 30...Thanks for reading...Adrian thanks as always for your informative and entertaining videos...Cheers Frank "The Memphis Suns"

Frank, sorry for the delay (pun intended) in responding but I needed time to formulate a decent answer to such a brilliant response. That’s some great info there, thank you!! My preferred live delay is a boss dm2 which is a very similar foundation to the adl although I’ve heard exactly what you say about the ADL, great delay pedal and really popular amongst country guys for that soft warm slap back. I always thought Tavo’s mystery brain would be a bright Setzer type delay and it can do it but without the pre amp it’s quite good as well, much more subtle than I would have thought. And yes I remember seeing a pic of Scotty Moore’s touring kit from his later years with those items you mention. Great stuff! Last of all, as you know.. sounding like Scotty Moore, largely in your playing! Thanks Frank!

One thing i notice is people dialing in slap back these days set it a little too fast. I'd say 130ms is the sweet spot. Most people put it around 110 120. I think 130 was closer to the echosonic slapback

I’ve just bought my first Gretsch guitar as I’ve been into Rockabilly since my teens but never got into the tech side, so I’m still a novice there. My amp is a Fender Mustang V2 which gives me a little echo.. but I don’t think it’s enough, do you think I’d still need the delay pedal to brighten up that Rockabilly sound? Thanks in advance
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 2 года назад
Hey mick, I’m so sorry for the slack response, I’m sure I responded but it’s showing up here as not having done. I’m sure you should be able to get a good sound if you spend a bit of time with it - I always liked the tweed sounds and with a bit of delay you can definitely get some good tones! But do what your ear desires I always say! Don’t feel as though you need to spend a big packet to get a good sound, those modelling amps are great fun!

Tell Scotty Moore that, he used pedals for the remainder of his career! My favourite sound is plugged straight into an amp up loud, but slap back delay is such a great part of the sound wouldn’t you agree?
