With distortion pedals, an interesting technique is parallel processing. Split the synth signal off into a mixer, and mix a little bit of the original signal back in with the distortion. This works best with rhythmic sounds with a sharp attack (such as drums), as you can lose some of the 'punch' with distortion, and parallel processing brings it back.

@@BoBeats I tend to watch almost as many pedal demos on RU-vid as synth ones. JHS Pedals have a great vlog if you want to discover some hidden gems and learn some history along the way. As for favourite pedals, I've always had a soft spot for the Boss DD-3. Also love my PS-3. One of the coolest pedals Boss ever put out. The Zoom MultiStomp pedals are also pretty good. They won't outperform a H9 but they also cost a fraction of the price. And the MS-70 and MS-100 are stereo which is handy for a lot of synths.

My favorite pedal for synths is the Digitech Luxe. It pitch-shifts your signal in tiny increments and mixes it back in to the original signal, sounding like you've doubled the number of oscillators in your synth. Fine control, great build quality, makes budget synths sound huge.

I think it's cool that you can get a used FX pedal for a setup for about $50, that's how much I got my Boss PH-3 for. Only issue is, you have to have certain wires plugged into the input and output for it to start using battery power. I still haven't figured it out yet, or what kind of wall plug it uses, haha. One day. After watching this though I've added a distortion pedal to my wishlist, along with reverb and delay.

Thnaks for the video!!! I have a question about the connexions . If you record guitar pedals as effects for audio (I mean just with the interface ,and NOT recording from guitar-pedals -amp), the main rule would be to use a Reamp Box or similar to affect the Raw Audio Track (previously recorded into your DAW) and have more flexibility for when to use different pedals along the track by turning them on/off and also changing parameters. That would be like reamping but with pedals. You could mike the amp recording the sound of the amp from the mic into the interface or go straight from the pedals avoiding the amp into the interface directly as in a loop if you use a box like the RADIAL EXTC -SA. I am no expert at all but this is what I understood from the videos i watched here on youtube. The explanation would be trying to avoid to record the signal from pedals directly into the interface just by themselves since they seem to have a different impedance. My question is : how do you record when using pedals with synths? Is the general rule of thumb to go from the synth into the pedal and directly into the interface? Do you record the synth as LINE level on the interface?? Sorry about the long explanation but I don't know if people just try different things or if there is a general agreement on how to do it.

Question - I am into synths and drum machines, and I like what I am hearing here, but I am concerned about mono. Like if I'm running a drum machine through this, or something like the model cycles, is it going to make my song sound worse if everything is in mono? Will I have to record six takes to get everything mixed into stereo? Anyone have any advice?

I had this idea when I bought the drumbrute 2 years ago and I bought a Boss Ds 1 distortion pedal ... but it never worked because I had a lot of buzz as soon as I turned up the effect and this problem I could never solve it
@Daphoid

My dillema currently is applying effects to multiple synths / groove boxes in my collection. I can currently put them all into my audio interface and apply effects with Logic Pro - but if I have external pedals like this, its easy to apply it to one at a time before the interface - but whats the best way to handle multiple devices getting effects? Do you go down the mixer route with FX sends (2-4 so you can have a handful of pedals available?) Do you end up with multiple of the same type (say multiple delays so you can add differing amounts of delay per device?) Or do you just stay digital for ease of use but more mouse clicking and computer bound workflow?

i chose your first methodology. it worlks well for me. i use 2 small, identical 4 channel Mackie boards, the first dealing with source inputs (synth, samplers and external effect pedals baked into the signal as needed), and then send that stereo signal to the second board. on board two, it's where i use the method you mentioned: the FX send has the fancy pedals ( that i'm becoming addicted to ) and i just dump the effected signal back into spare inputs -in my case, the 'tape in' inputs on the board. out there in the wild, is there an easier, simpler, more logical way to get to the same place? i'm sure of it. but, it's important to know oneself: half of the fun, for me, is thinking of new signal path routing and running cable to see if something works. oh, and to address loopback issues between my interface and the DAW: my final send out of board two goes to a 1979 Teac A-300 stereo cassette deck. recording to tape in 2020 seems to some, who maybe have never recorded to tape, to be antithetical heresy- and that's half of the reason i do it.

Distortion that doesn't kill and add that high frequency shrill. This really sounds pleasing. And I am rooted in the harder Detroit sound but distortion these days is just not usable or danceable in my opinion. Fine for bedroom knob twiddlers. Need to look more at this one. Thanks for the Video!

It's cool but I think you'd be better off running a distortion off mixer sends into a stereo distortion and then returning it on the same desk in stereo with EQ to kind of get a parallel distortion blended against the mix. My two faves are the TC mojomojo and EHX Operation Overlord.

@@chiralityaudio I think that the Splinter sounds great on the synth and drum machine. Coming from the darker sounds of Detroit Techno I''m looking for a distortion and saturation pedal but a lot of pedals are just too much distortion I think and then there's that added higher frequency shrill I don't like. This distortion is really pleasing. And thanks for the info about compression which helps answer the question, do I need another pedal for compression? Not really.

I'll tell you one thing I've discovered running synth gear through pedals: input volume will make/break the sound. Guitar pedals are designed to run at considerably lower volume than most synth gear is capable of outputting (instrument level vs. line level), and in many cases that input volume can shape the tonal characteristics of a pedal.
@BoBeats

Yepp, very true. Its quite important to not go too crazy on the input
@kylekennedy3299

So run through a mixer first and mix in an effects loop? I’m not too savvy with routing but it makes sense to me. I’ve always just cranked down the instrument output level when needed but it’d be nice to have a smooth setup to work with
@SAHOYT71013

@@kylekennedy3299 no, just keep output volume of gear feeding into pedals low to start, and experiment with different volumes to taste.

@charlesandrewmoore8699
@charlesandrewmoore8699 3 года назад
considering the variance in chip/diode tolerances, one would have a have tough time finding matched pairs of pedals. so you're likely to get phase issues. i run mono into my drive pedals and then reintroduce stereo at the time based fx ends of my pedal chains. then again, i'm also running all that into a board w panning anddditional eq, so i have a lot of control. hardware i/o routing with alot of signal control is the answer for me! and a million times more fun to play on than in the box, too.

What is the difference between Overdrive and Saturation? I ask this because Digitakt has only Overdrive and I suspect that both things are the same...
@mikeexits
@mikeexits 4 года назад
I believe Overdrive is more like a heavy guitar type distortion, whereas Saturation is more of a soft, subtle distortion which fattens the sound up a bit. I don't really know more than that, so I can't get more specific than that. There's another distortion type called Fuzz
@SAHOYT71013
@SAHOYT71013 4 года назад
Overdrive is subtle distortion, originally named/modeled from the effect of signal breakup/extra harmonics induced by vintage gear pushing volumes past the point that they could maintain the sound's original tone. A lot of early hard rock involved guitarists cranking the volume controls of their amplifiers so that the signal started overloading the preamps inside of them; this was before/just after effects pedals started being sold in any great numbers. Saturation (in my mind at least) is more of a studio type thing; some vintage gear, e.g. compressors, mixing consoles, microphone preamps are designed in such a way that when pushed, the signal doesn't drive so much as emphasizes certain parts of the audio spectrum (in essence makes it come across thicker/heavier), sort of an in-between of compression and overdrive/distortion. At that, compression is really just distortion made to react at certain input volume/time constraints, often slow enough that it doesn't clip/distort, it just adjusts volume intuitively or even saturates the signal.

As a synth player, I have become addicted to pedals. Bass guitar-centric pedals work especially well on synths as they are capable of handling the low frequency spectrum of synths. Another one of my favorite is the DOD Gonkulator which I run my TR-77 thru. Distortion combined with the ring mod on a cheesy beat makes it just plain nasty. Only for Hogan's Heros fans ;).
