This was hard to watch for reasons stated in the comments. It’s Ohtani… easy. Simple argument; he acquires the two most valuable skill sets in the sport. Playoffs are a team achievement. He’s the MVP and the best player in the sport.
People who stopped watching baseball came back, and it's not because of Vlad Jr., Salvy Perez, et al. No doubt who brought the most value to the league.
Bro to be real I'm a hip hop and bball head but this Ohtani kid keeps getting brought up around my circles so I had to see what's up with this dude, actually does look similar to me
@@firejoedan1573 I’m glad he got you interested. Baseball players used to be celebrities, Like Derek Jeter and David Ortiz. That’s not the case anymore. Hopefully Ohtani changes that.
Vladdy has been the best hitter in the AL. However, Ohtani is the clear and obvious MVP. He has a .590 SLG, a 157 OPS+, 45 home runs, 26 stolen bases, and also, nearly 100 walks. AND HE’S A PITCHER!!! He has 8.9 bWAR to go with a 140 ERA+. No one, not even Ruth in 1918, has ever combined such awesome hitting with that great of pitching. He has over 2 more bWAR than Vladdy, and amazingly, a higher walk rate! On a purely statistical and value-added level, Shohei is the clear and obvious MVP, and it’s not even close to being close.
@@wilkesmcdermid7906 yup... but Cole might pitch Saturday Goes to show people... especially people bagging on Ohtani's ERA Ray who has a 2.68 ERA and probably the CY Young winner Ohtani was 2.70 ERA range for most of the season
@@davidright1398 Even with a great game I dont think Cole can beat Robbie Ray for the Cy Young. I think Toronto destroyed Coles chances at Cy Young last game. Robbie Ray owes his teammates a lot of beers.
I feel like Pedro was arguing against himself. He gave points for both sides but said Vlad. Ohtani should win MVP, he’s pitching and hitting and being successful at it.
The dumbest comment was when he said Vlad, Jr. is carry their offense. Semien has almost as many home runs as Vlad, Jr. If Ohtani was being protected by Trout and Rendon pitchers would be forced to pitch to Ohtani. Most games the Blue Jays play Vlad, Jr. isn't even the best hitter of the game. He doesn't have to do much. Everyone around him gets the hits and knocks in the runs.
@@tedjohnson7485 Yep, these morons keep ignore the fact TOR has good pitching staff, 5 others good hitters with 81 to 112 RBI, keep blowing up smoke like Vlad Jr is the only one carry TOR with his hitting.
Yep. Ohtani had such a big offensive first half because 1. Jared Walsh was absolutely crushing the ball and protecting him and 2. Rendon was batting after him. I get Rendon missed quite a bit of games, but Walsh/Rendon following Ohtani forced the pitchers to pitch to Ohtani. Absolutely zero protection second half. Since start of September, it's even worse
Ohtani is the complete package...one of the best hitter, one of the best pitcher (with the most unhittable pitch), one of the best fielders at his position (probably the best fielding pitcher) and one of the best base stealer (the fastest time from home to first) with the highest WAR value. Has there ever been a baseball player in the history of baseball to have all of these skillsets at an elite level but Ohtani? Why is there even a debate about who is MVP this season?
Idk what planet you are living on. Have you ever thought his WAR is higher because Trout and Rondon have been hurt all year? Yeah it’s great he pitches but IF Trout was healthy then he would easily be the best player on the Angels. Let’s not crown Ohtani as this once and a generation talent. Dude is finished the season batting .257 and almost struck out 200 times. Real baseball fans understand that Vlad is the MVP. He leads Ohtani in most offensive categories. If Ohtani didn’t pitch then I think Vlad wins it running away.
I know stats isn’t the be all end all, but Shohei’s WAR is Gerrit Cole and Stanton combined. That’s a upper echelon superstar bat and Cy Young candidate combined into one
@@witgiz2868 maybe if you only include his war as a Batter and not a pitcher... folks like you have a problem with computing that he pitches... because if you did? he is not that far behind Ray who has a 2.84 ERA compared to Ohtani who has a 3.18 ERA
@@witgiz2868 why are you using Fan graph? does its show Ohtani at 8.9? because that is where he is??? if you combined Ohtani's hitting and pitching just because you think ERA is a joke does not make it so the joke is people like you just cant compute he is pitching so you just discount it
@@witgiz2868 What is Ohtani’s combined offensive and pitching fWAR? You will find that Guerrero’s fWAR is not greater than Shohei’s. It’s also pretty funny that you just say ERA is a joke without actually explaining why. And that’s also why pitching bWAR is not based on ERA, but rather, RA adjusted for defense and the park they pitch in, lol.
I love pedro so much, he's so charismatic and knowledgable, but he is just flat out incorrect here. His arguments didn't really make sense and it seems more like he is just fighting for Vladdy because of their shared homeland. I admire Pedro for doing that, but Ohtani is the clear and obvious mvp
Ohtani is the real mvp i been saying it and im dominican!....but to day pedro argument dont make sense is ridiculous lol...vlady playing over 1000 inning dont make sense to you???? Come on man ..i think ohtani is mvp but i never thought about that...and how about no DH getting mvp in the past? That dont make sense either? ..again to me ohtani is mvp but vlady does have some points on his favor..again ohtani need to get it we havent see this in over 100 years
@@platano3000x I mean I understood what Pedro was saying, I just don’t think he raised any points that make vladdy the mvp over ohtani. Like for example, sure vladdy played in the field but it was at first base. I’m not saying playing first base in the big leagues is easy it is still far less strenuous than throwing a 100 max effort pitches every week or so.
I mean Pedro's counter argument for Vladdy actually reinforces Ohtani as MVP. He seems to forget that the key word in MVP is VALUABLE. If Ohtani is truly "building a new era of baseball" and can clinch starting wins (Selective or otherwise) then he truly is bringing the most value to the league, and certainly the Angels.
Nailed it. Was thinking same thing. Also, Pedro derailed his own argument by continuing to complain about not getting MVP in 1999. Tbh, his argument was more geared to HOW the writers vote vs actually debating Ohtani and Vlad.
Pedro is just defending his godson and compatriot. If Vlady was from Chicago or Puerto Rico he would be standing in favor of Ohtani. Is understandable what he is doing
I never liked baseball and was not interested in watching and following a certain sport for that matter. I started watching because Ohtani got my attention and I started to become interested in the game. I started to google words, terms related to baseball. I am trying to understand the game. I don`t even care if Ohtani gets the MVP or not. He is beyond MVP. He is worth more than just MVP.
Well, Im dominican and I think Shohei just deserves it more… pitching and hitting at that rate cannot just being not pointed out… the guy struck out 150+ MLB batters and hit 45+ homers… NOBODY ever has done that, NOBODY; it’s just that simple… people want to make a case for Vladdy (who I love as a player and always rooting for him to do good) saying the Jays are in the playoff contention, but when your teamates are the IMO Cy Young winner (Robbie Ray) and the best middle infield duo in years offensively (Semien with the most HR for a 2nd baseman and Bo with 100RBI; and T.H) is easier to fight for things in comparison of playing without Trout and Rendon for more than half of the games. Let’s just don’t be mean and recognize Ohtani it’s playing viedogame baseball this year and give him the MVP
Shohei has brought curiosity to Baseball for those who didn’t care and those who stopped watching..even internationally he is known as a phenomenon in Europe and other parts of the world and he can also run if walked…as a player he shows sportsmanship, respect and manners which has been a good example to kids. All this in this baseball player of the century…Who is blowing life into a declining sport. Shouldn’t he be rewarded for that, even most of the star players are happy for the interest Ohtani has brought to the sport. Martinez discussion is about himself. This discussion would have been unthinkable if Shohei had been sitting there instead. That’s how narrow minded Pedros case is….
The reason Ohtani is MVP is that contributions are measurable and indeed measured in RUNS. Ohtani is unmatched in 2021 in this regard and deserves the award on that basis and that basis alone.
@@project.chastity i like vladi but is not like hernandez bichette and semiem plus robby ray and berrios are having amazing seasons. The angels have no Ace, no bullpen and rendkn trout and fletcher have been hurt almost all year. So to make a comparison, imagine a rotation of blue jays made of matz and strippling and no robbie ray. Then imagine a lineup with semien and bichette hurt all year.
If the strike zone doubled in size Vlad Sr might be the best hitter in history. Him getting a hit on a pitch that bounced on the ground before he hit it is one of my favorite baseball moments of all time. No batting gloves swinging with murderous power plus a great arm. Really unique player.
@@user-ry6cb2vr2p And he still trails there. Also no it doesn't. A walk does not move a baserunner that has an open base behind them, a hit does. Vlad also is up by quite a few RBI's. I played a lot and no, a walk isn't always as good as a hit.
It's ohtani, I love Vlad but he has siemien and bichette who have been legit candidates for MVP, ohtani didn't even have trout the majority of the year
Man Pedro just sounds like a bitter old man here and kept cutting Matty off to retort against his bias when he was about to say Pedro is way more biased since Vlad is his godson. It's a shame Pedro turned on Ohtani and became an Ohtani hater just so he could prop Vlad up. Pretty classless and petty thing to do.
Ohtani has played in 1 fewer game yet has 70 fewer at bats. Despite this, Ohtani only trails Vlady by 1 HR, 8 RBIs, and 19 runs scored. Ohtani also has 26 stolen bases. Even without his pitching, Ohtani is at least in the MVP conversation.
And not to mention Shohei got a lot of them walks and he dont have the same talent around as Vladdy who got Semien(prolly finish top3-4 in al mvp race).
As a diehard Red Sox fan, Pedro’s my guy but he DEAD wrong on this take. The fact that Ohtani has been dominant as a pitcher and hitter is enough of a reason for him to be the AL MVP.
@@deesnuts1 Not that much better. MVP is not a hitter award, if it is a hitter award, sure Vlad will get it but the value shohei brings to the game is another level.
@@orion7311 I agree with everything you said. Besides the hitter thing vlad is a much better hitter than Ohtani. Cant compete with pitching and hitting tho. And the best overall hitter award is called the Hank Aaron award.
@@deesnuts1 I agree he is a better hitter but don't know about the much better argument. He is closer to Vlad in both home runs and rbi, there is not a huge difference. If it's average, I don't know whether it is matters when at the end of the season you have similar stats. I agree Ohtani is not the best hitter but he is in top 10 for the most of the stats. So I just wonder about the much better thing, Vlad is definitely a better hitter but not a huge difference. That's just my opinion.
I respect Pedro Martinez for many of his commentaries, but he's just forcing a faulty argument here for what I believe is his personal affection and family connection with Vlad Jr. I know Pedro has been very complimentary toward Ohtani in previous segments and when they met in person during that AS game media day. But he's playing games with stats and perspectives that ignore the monumental accomplishments of Ohtani. He's also stubbornly resisting the broader view and better stats. At the end of the season, a season in which Vlad Jr was great without a question, Vlad Jr didn't even win the triple crown categories outright and his team didn't make it to the postseason despite his much stronger list of teammates including two or three who were almost as good in various offensive categories. Ohtani's stats on both sides of the game were top five or top ten in many categories, and he did two very different approaches at an elite level like we've never seen since the totally different era in which Babe Ruth played. Ohtani did that with a much weaker cast around him, the team being without Trout and Rendon for most of the season and Upton being out much of the time or not at his best. Ohtani is the clear MVP not just of the AL but all of MLB for the way he created a huge buzz around a sport that has been fading in the public mind for years. His season was historic and transcendent. And he should be the face of baseball for it as well as enshrined right now in the Hall of Fame for this incredible season, regardless of whatever else he does after this.
Pedro sticking up for a fellow Dominican, nothing more nothing less he was also teammates with his father. The Cubs finished in last place when Andre Dawson won the most valuable player award.
@Bob Lee So? That doesn't mean he should be MVP on a losing team. Most valuable also means your team should win. Honestly Dawson shouldn't have been MVP. He was simply because no one was close. This year others are and on winning teams. They do it when it matters.
Pedro Martinez says that Ohtani isnt as valuable as Vlad Jr because he never helped push Angels to the Postseason. Angels arent in the playoffs because of the injuries of Trout, Rendon, Sandoval, Canning, Bundy. They would be in the Wild Card hunt if it wasnt for the injuries. Ohtani and Walsh are the only reason that the Angels are where they are right now.
The Blue Jays aren't even in the playoffs either. Pedro can look at the real Vlad for a player who got their team to the playoffs. That was Vlad in 2004, his first season with the Angels. Too bad the last two weeks of that season wore the Angels out for the playoffs.
They probably wouldn't be in the wild card even with all those guys healthy. The Angels are an awful, awful team with a few great players. They need to be completely rebuilt from the ground up.
@@EldritchAugur I totally disagree. It would be incredibly unsmart to do a rebuild. You have so many leaders in Ohtani, Trout, Rendon, and Walsh. Then you have the young talent in Marsh, Adell, Mayfield, Canning and Sandoval.Yes they aren't perfect, but all they need is an ace, a #2 starter and a couple of bullpen pieces and they are legitamite contenders.
@@tedjohnson7485 OMG, triple crown is out of reach, got to tell Perez to stop playing, Gurriel to stop hitting so that Vlad Jr can get 3 HR and 15 RBI in 3 games to win it.

Disagree. While I think he's the unanimous MVP this year, he's not close to having the greatest season ever. Guys like Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth had better seasons and most recently Mookie Betts MVP year with Boston was significantly better.

Ohtani plays with Walsh, Fletcher and Trout; with his injury. Who else even pitches for the Angels? The answer is in the title. Most Valuable Player.
I am a Jay fan and I like vlad jr. a lot. But I think Ohtani should win the MVP. I have seen many guys play as well as vlad jr. before, but I have never seen anyone play like Ohtani. Ohtani is a better player than vlad jr. overall.
With all due respect, Pedro sounds like a fool. He just sounds like he's crying the whole time about how he didn't get an MVP. Shohei Ohtani is easily MVP. He's talking about the defensive innings being difficult even though he never played a defensive position regularly but then discredits anything Matt says about pitching because he didn't pitch.
I don’t understand why people are saying “Vladdy carried the Blue Jays”. It’s completely untrue. Bischette is having a fantastic year, Teoscar Hernandez is having an All MLB caliber year, and Semien has the most home runs by second baseman in a single season ever. Not to mention the AL CY Young. I mean come one.
to me its a absolute burn to hear people chanting MVP on the Blue Jays for just Vlad Semien is only a few Home Runs and RBIs behind Vlad I guess Blue Jay fans dont think he is sticking around
Exactly, Angels would be terrible without Ohtani, now with him they're just mediocre. Vlad doesn't even have the highest WAR on his own team (Semien does). To me the MVP race isn't even close. It should be unanimous for Ohtani.
I lost so much respect for pedro. This guy calling out sho for "picking & choosing" games to pitch is ridiculous. The fact he even asked do you know what it's like to be an athlete? Pedro I know you were skinny af with the dodgers and early with red Sox but come on. Shohei is a 6 tool athlete. I'm not saying baseball is easy or anything. Did pedro steal bases like sho? Did pedro have power to even hit 1 hr or does he only have power to knock down old Yankees don zimmer? Does he know sho can play RF? Go watch his highlights. Pedro sounds like a boomer when he says we'll in 99 they didn't give me MVP. Maybe it's cuz of that they started to vote for pitchers for mvp. We've seen kershaw, Verlander, and Sherzer win mvp.
I'd like to see Pedro go out and pitch and then hit during the games. And the next day and every day leading up to his next start be the DH. Ohtani is Japanese and they pitch every 6th day instead of every 5th day so you have to be careful with them. Maybe next season Ohtani will be ready to pitch every 5th day.
Vlad is surrounded by talents such as Bichette, Springer, and Teoscar Hernandez. Ohtani's teammates such as Fletcher and Walsh are not at those players level. Especially with Trout and Rendon injured, Ohtani has no protection in the lineup and also Angels cannot get to the playoffs with their trash pitching, even with Ohtani pitching well.
Don't forget Semien. He has 44 home runs now. Almost as many as Vlad, Jr. I bet the dumb A's wish they re-signed him. Maybe they could have afforded him if they did. But they let him sign a one year deal with an AL East team. I'm sure a lot of the homers are because of those ballparks. Tougher to hit them in most AL West ballparks besides the Astros' ballpark.
Thank you been saying this forever. Take Vlad out of the Jays and they're still fighting for a playoff spot. Take Ohtani out of the Angels they're the worst team in the Majors. Place Ohtani on the Jays they are in the playoffs easy. Simple as that.
Just switch around Vlad and Ohtani place and see how Pedro respond. He’d be drooling over Vlad being the baseball Jesus two-way sensation from DR. Race does matter
I agree. But no need to worry. Hardly anyone is buying Pedro's bs. And if they do then they're flat out demonstration of a little kid who was told by his uncle or pops " Son everything Pedro says is true" but no need to worry. Almost all of us know Pedro's full of shit and for the most part with a few exceptions ohtani is getting the respect he deserves for being possibly the most dominant individual ever in the sport.
There isn’t a debate, Ohtani is revolutionizing the game. Like it’s not like he’s just a pitcher and a hitter so let’s give it to him. HE IS A TOP TIER HITTER AND IS A TOP 5 PITCHER IN THE AL. Pedro legit made no sense the whole time.
Yes this one is a stupid take but he doesn’t pretend to base it on anything but emotion and arrogance unlike all the eggheads and tribesmen who surround him who are for the most part comically and transparently disingenuous. Pedro has f u money so he says what he wants at least.
That was probably the greatest pitching season of all time, and he has a right to be upset that he didn’t win, but to use it as an argument here is ridiculous.
Pedro won 3 Cy Young’s….that’s basically the MVP trophy for pitchers 🤷🏿 but then again, I think Dennis Eckersley won an MVP as a relief pitcher when he was with the A’s
In any case, the decision has been made months ago. Any honest and thinking person knows who the MVP award goes to. Pedro Martinez appears to have changed his mind in supporting Ohtani and he sure shows it here. And here's a Hall of Famer who once said "90% of the batters I hit, I hit intentionally."
Im Dominican, but there’s no way that Vladi can beat Ohtani, there’s no human that can beat him right now, bad time to have a great season for Vladi or any other player.
Mvp is not contingent on the teams success, nine of the awards are. That's the reason they are given to individuals instead of teams. Cy Young, silver slugger, ROY, gold glove, mvp. All of these are based on individual success. If they were based on team success, the voting wouldn't be done prior to playoffs
Dude pedro really just made it about himself when its about 2 studs who can contribute almost everyday. And pedros thing of ohtani is an athlete that he should be able to do stuff but yet vlad and pedro cant do certain things which is fine they have jobs ,ohtani has 2 jobs.
Vladimir Jr Is better batter by a lot, he play defense too. I will put this simple. If there is an argument between two players and one is on a .500 team and the other in a playoff race then there is no question who is most valuable. It sure as hell isn't the guy on the team that is only .500. The award is for Most VALUABLE, not best season. Ohtani does not deserve the award. If one player is heads above all then yes I don't care what the teams record is. He isn't.
@@angelicalynn1259 well vladdy has had help of a Cy Young in Robbie Ray and a couple of MVP candidates in Semien and Bichette, along with Teoscar and Springer to name a few. I love Vladdy but he just had some though luck going up against the phenom.
@@ivanquintanilla2379 And again it is way easier with no pressure. The Angels have never been in it this year. There was zero pressure so yeah that makes it easier. He could stay relaxed because his team had no chance. 99.9% of people can preform better on a losing team than one that has to fight to stay alive. Sorry but no one on a team that had no chance should be the MVP. Most valuable in the league should have something to do with actually winning. Cy Young on the other hand is simply the best pitcher. Two totally different criteria.
And this guy Pedro just forgot the fact that he himself as a pitcher needed 5 days rest between start when he try to point out Ohtani just D/H, not have to play in the field every day like Vlad Jr as position player, wear & tear blah blah blah..., ignored the fact Ohtani hit every day, before, during and after day of pitching, no pitcher can ever dream of doing that.
I just found out who the real knucklehead is. It's Pedro. Who cares about the number of Innings he played on the field when you vote for an MVP? If Vladdy played like Ozzie Smith for the entire season, I would have listened to Pedro. However, I don't see any sharp athleticism or quickness in Vladdy, he is just standing around the 1st base when he is in defense. The MVP should and will go to Ohtani. By the way that blue cake looks gross.
The reasoning against Ohtani's case that I absolutely detest is the one concerning the angels' inability to snag a playoff spot. Baseball is a team sport, yeah? So to get to the playoffs EVERYBODY contributes. But the MVP award is an INDIVIDUAL recognition, it's about who contributes the most. Don't punish a player if his teammates couldn't help him. How hard is it to understand that? This is why we don't give too much weight on pitcher win-loss records as much anymore because they can't help it if their batters suck ass (or are you still from ye olden crowd? my god).
with that said... Ohtan has a 9 and 2 record on a team 8 games under 500 and you can bet there were some blown saves as he handed the ball off to the bullpen with the lead in at least 4 to 6 of his outings

He has played 158 games ( same as Vlady) but he is playing the most difficult position in baseball. Tell me I am wrong that catcher is not the most difficult position to play in baseball. It is more of a debate of Ohtani vs Perez for MVP. We can argue that Vlady is not even the best player on " his " team. The Jays are stacked. Total disrespect for all the other blue jays players. Semien 44 HR , BO 180+ HITS, Hernandez 120 + RBIs. Ray cy young candidate, etc You can also argue that pitcher is most demanding. It is a toss up between pitcher and catcher as most demanding in baseball. The fact that one guy can do both pitch and hit at an ELITE LEVEL AND run bases should make him MVP regardless of team record. Jays are stacked , Angels are not. Neither are the Royals . Co MvP , yea Ohtani and Perez NOT Vladdy. As a side note - you know what really sucks is to hear Asian fans and Latin fans saying they stop watching MLB if one wins MVP over the other. Can we not just enjoy this GREAT MLB Season? Look at how historic this season is. Ohtani, Perez , vladdy , semien, Soto, Franco, Scherzer, Marte , Harper, the Giants , the Cardinals, look at the rookies , Carlson, India, Adonis Garcia , list goes on and on. Sit back and enjoy the game , sure have debates but leave out what nationality players are.
I agree that if Vlad, Jr. deserves to be the MVP over Ohtani there's other players who deserve it too. Semien on the Blue Jays does too. If it's about home runs then there are several players. Ohtani deserves it though because of his pitching and hitting combined. I think I'd put Perez second though. Does he have the kind of protection around him in the Royals' lineup like Vlad, Jr. has? Ohtani has nobody helping him.
Yes, that is a good point. In all fairness, Salvy should also be mentioned. (Or even more other) why its Vlad only is actually unfair to others. Vlad’s actual performance is strongly concentrated around hitting only. Vlad does not even play above average at first base, has quite errors, doesn’t run well….not overall athletic. It’s for baseball nerds who only think baseball is about hitting HR .. Baseball is offense AND defense game. You need to hit, pitch and run to score WITH team.
This was one of the most bizarre, cringest takes I’ve ever seen from anyone who has played baseball. Vlad is his godson and I see Pedro desperately wants his beloved dominican son to win by discrediting Ohtani… Vlad is doing great star things this year, but NO PLAYER IN BASEBALL HISTORY has more than 45HR, 100RBI, 100 R, 25 SB, 8 tripples EXCEPT OHTANI. As a hitter alone he collects MVP votes. Plus his elite pitching. It is simply mind blowing. Unreal. Shohei Ohtani is clearly The Most Valuable Player.

@@jaronkupsov1999 Why don't you make a point instead of corny name calling like the imbecile you are? Vlad has 28 doubles and 46 homeruns and 107 RBI .... Semien has 39 doubles 44 homeruns and 101 RBI and he's giving you that from second base.
@@meltednostrilsbornwithoutn781 from his position he has elite production no denying that great season, but vlad still leads in two of the stats u mentioned to make the point in homers and rbis although not by a huge gap while also providing significantly higher ops and advanced numbers.
Don't even know why there is still a debate. I love Blue Jays, and Vlad Jr is with no doubt one of the greatest players this season.... He's just got bad luck to have Shohei Ohtani this year. That guy deserve it as he's the MVP for his team AND the sport. Vladdy should just forget about this year's MVP. He's still young, powerful, and is in a great team that can support him to get MVP for upcoming years. Ohtani's task to deliver a season as good as this year will be way more difficult. Although I do hope both players can do this for a long time.
This is so hard to watch 😔 He's trying so hard to be respectful to Pedro. He's so patient. It's hard to believe this is the same Pedro who has been praising Ohtani in the ASG.
What player has been more responsible for returning the fans to MLB ballparks? You took Mike Trout out of Anaheim and still had an exciting season and kept fans interested.
Did Pedro really just say , "Try to chuck 100-mph from 60 feet ", like Bruh ..Ohtani has hit 102-mph and regularly gets 97-99-mph. He's one of the hardest throwers , what a bad take lol
Leading a team into the playoffs is overrated. Look at the Toronto Blue Jays. A team with Vlad and three other batters with 100 RBIs plus George Springer, and a pitching rotation with Robbie Ray and Berrios (both potential Cy Young winners) and Ryu, could not make the playoffs. If Vlad could not put that team over the top to get into the playoffs, how valuable was he?
The same way there is no debate about Vlad Jr.'s greatness, there is no debate that Shohei is MVP. What Vlad is doing is phenomenal. What Shohei is doing has NEVER been done.
The uniqueness of his performance is not and should not be the reason he is MVP. The reason he is MVP is that he has created more run differential than anyone else. Runs are the currency of wins. Wins, not unique performances, are the lone measure of value in zero-sum professional sports.
But Vlad, Jr. should be doing a lot more than he is. He has a lot of good hitters around him. He really fell off on home runs just like Ohtani did. Ohtani did because teams decided he had no protection so just pitch around him. You can't do that with Vlad, Jr. Ohtani probably would have 60 home runs by now if pitchers were being forced to pitch to him. Now they're all scared and pitch way outside.
@@alsacrime4806 maybe in a perfect world but MVPs are not always selected purely based on that criteria. The player with the highest WAR for example, has not won the MVP too many times to mention here. Uniqueness of performance, if only in practice, is most definitely one of the reasons a player has been selected, historically speaking
@@thecallshop Yeah well that is pure Hegelian troping, a pilpul trick. What you are describing is Player of the Year. Historical voting trends by a bunch of dead asshole sportswriters are not a consideration AT ALL.
@@alsacrime4806 Yep, but MVP has never REALLY meant most VALUABLE player. It's always been misinterpreted as Best Player, or Favorite Player, or Player of the Year or Most Popular Player or whatever you want to call it. Otherwise it would only have ever been given to players whose teams had success, right?
