Peek Out Tip - Don’t Over Rotate!

One of the BIGGEST mistakes I see a lot when students peek out is that they OVER ROTATE.
Of course we have to have a little rotation in our back/chest to throw their weight forward and sit/slide through to their back, but over rotating and turning your chest up to the sky too much is overkill. By doing this you are making your job harder because you now have to rotate all the way back and get behind them. Only rotate as much as you need to get the clearance and take their back.

Coach taught the sit out and peak out in class yesterday…I wrestled in high school so I’m already familiar 😉 The over rotation was actually something I noticed in class…being 32 and not 17 anymore I found the more efficient way was rotating less instead of the exaggerated movement like you showed…Good stuff! Feels great to be back on the mats thanks to bjj…10 months in currently 🤙🏼

I'm guilty of this one.

I was too in the beginning, but through time, and through my coach yelling at me (many times) I adjusted 😀

Man, thanks for the great tip. I've only been wrestling for years right now as a sophomore and so I've never thought of that move but it's really clever. Thankyou 👍🏼😊

Black belt here . I exaggerate the peek cuz if I don’t drill it like that the small movement doesn’t break my opponents grip . I also have a grip on the inner thigh to the side I’m peeking out so he can’t step over. But yah if my opponent doesn’t have a grip there’s no need for an hard peek. Most Likely the guys gonna want a arm in guillotine/anaconda/ d’arce/ neck tie or a stalling body lock so he will have some sort of grip

I was thinking the same thing. My coach makes us drill the same thing. In fact the leg peeking out does not touch the mat, but is pushed as far out as possible to have enough momentum to break the grip. I find this useful especially against bigger stronger guys that sprawl hard on you. Its all one quick motion though for max effectiveness.

Ya, notice he's not even gripping a front headlock and his sprawl is super weak. With a sprawl that weak, he could just finish the takedown.

Dang. I’m glad I’m seeing this

That's my problem. I am still weak in certain areas, so by the time I figure my opening I have to shoot out. Then it's me trying to create more momentum to go back the other way. Timing is mostly my issue. The other is, having to think about my move, rather than just doing the move

This is awesome, I just practiced this in my last grappling class and didn’t quite get it. I think that I’ll be able to hit this move now, thanks!
