So how did Peel Police get away with stashing their hoard of 98,469 street check records despite their Records Policy directing that most of that personal information should have been destroyed after one year? Because the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) ruled Peel Police COULD!
For the record, on March 23, 2018 the Peel Police Services Board skipped skipped right over the very first street check annual report mandated by 58/16 - Ontario’s new carding regulations.
Skipped over despite (or perhaps because of) Item 13 showing that Peel Police attempted to collect information on just two people in all of 2017 and was successful in only carding one.
Yet Peel Police Chief Evans was the #1 Champion-Defender of carding insisting street checks "provide invaluable information for police officers to solve serious crimes" and were an “invaluable way of solving crime.”
In 2015 she even warned the Board that if police lose their ability to interact with the public "and make notes of it then we will lose the battle in crime."
Yet for all of 2017, the Chief's force attempted to card just two people and they let one of them walk without providing information.

Now unless Peel Police are carding people through more traffic stops it's difficult to believe they were "invaluable tools" and without them police would "lose the battle in crime."
Either way, the Board buried the entire issue. Fortunately other police boards (ie City of Hamilton) didn't.
