"Peer Gynt" Op.23, is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875. It premiered along with the play on 24 February 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo). Grieg later created two suites from his Peer Gynt music. Some of the music from these suites have received coverage in popular culture.
Edvard Grieg was one of the definitive leaders of Scandinavian music and his influence was great. Although composing many short piano pieces and chamber works, the work Grieg did for Henrik Ibsen stood out. When Ibsen asked Grieg to write music for the play in 1874, he reluctantly agreed. However, it was much more difficult for Grieg than he imagined. "Peer Gynt progresses slowly," he wrote to a friend in August 1874, “and there is no possibility of having it finished by autumn. It is a terribly unmanageable subject.”
"The more he saturated his mind with the powerful poem, the more clearly he saw that he was the right man for a work of such witchery and so permeated with the Norwegian spirit," his wife wrote of him and his music. Even though the premiere was a "triumphant success", it prompted Grieg to complain bitterly that the Swedish management of the theatre had given him specifications as to the duration of each number and its order: "I was thus compelled to do patchwork... In no case I had the opportunity to write as I wanted... Hence the brevity of the pieces" he said.
Originally, Grieg composed 90 minutes of orchestral music for the play, he later went back and extracted certain sections for the suites. Peer Gynt's travels around the world and distant lands are represented by the instruments Grieg chooses to use. For many years, the suites were the only parts of the music that were available, as the original score was not published until 1908, one year after Grieg's death, by Johan Halvorsen. The complete score of the incidental music includes several songs and choral pieces. The complete score was believed to be lost until the 1980s and has been performed in its entirety only since then.

I walked into my 7th grade music class in at age 12, and Mr. Olson was playing a vinyl LP. I remember being frozen in my steps, listening. I was mesmerized. It was an absolute spiritual experience in that moment. I called my dad after school (he worked in NYC) and asked him if he could find the LP of Peer Gynt. He did, and brought it home with him, I still have that LP, now at age 76, and it's been played a gazillion times, each time with thanks to Mr. Olson and my dad. God bless you both.

My favorite part is Solvieg singing from the hut. It really expresses the dread that Gynt must have been feeling here. The old man realizing that he had never truly lived his whole life, while death calls for him

This week I had a nice experience as a teacher in my class with 25 sports students, age 16. They were performing Ibsen’s text, Håvar was reading Peer Gynt lines, and Peter was reading lines of Dovregubben. And I was reading all the troll lines. We all had to shout the lines out as this version of In the hall of the mountain king was blasting out from the loudspeakers. Peer Gynt was chased by all the trolls, and he was finally escaping through a rat hole. Phu! But he had adapted the saying among the trolls: Be yourself - enough, directly translated from: Vær deg selv - nok. The play and the music are about 150 years old, and both are still modern and relevant for young people. It’s nice to see that the teenagers can have fine experiences both from the music and from the litterature.
@timothythorne9464

Both the Ibsen play and Grieg's magnificent score should remain a part of current literature and music taught in secondary schools today. I read the play Peer Gynt just three days ago, and was astonished and how modern and relatable to our own times it is; it's really an allegory which blends much Norse mythology with principles of psychoanalysis.
@sorensru
@sorensru Год назад
@@timothythorne9464 I agree! What is it to be yourself? This is a philosophical question that is interesting to discuss with the students. They are in the process of growing up and becoming part of communities. In Peer Gynt we find that to be yourself, you need relations to other people, and to be yourself is "seg selv å døde", you have to kill your selfish part. But the trolls are only selfish, and "yourself enough". This is very important to discuss with the students. The music from the hall of the mountain king is wild and animalistic, like the trolls. The troll can represent an animalistic reflection of a human being. But maybe I will lose som of the students at this stage:)

I have known Ibsen's play first as I had to read it in school. Then I heard Morning in a movie and loved it and then I saw a ballet which included full length music, now just listening to music itself. There is a lot of sadness in it, a lot of hopelessness and melancholy (reflection of Grieg himself? ) Also love Grieg's piano concerto.

In my first year in high school, I learned about 'Solveig's song' in a music class. I just had recognized it was such a beautiful and sad song, but I was not interested in anything about the song, such as background, composer, writer, etc. After a long time, I moved to another country and got aged like others. Last year, I had a tearing eye problem, but I didn't pay attention immediately because I thought it was an aging issue. However, once it started to cause infection symptoms with eye discharge, I had to call a new eye doctor's clinic to make an appointment. I had to wait a while on the phone, but I was not bored because I happened to listen to a piece of exciting hold music. It was very familiar, but I couldn't remember the title. However, when I was listening to music on RU-vid, I found that terrific music by accident! It is 'In the hall of mountain king' composed by Edvard Grieg. I still cannot describe the moment when I found it out, and I just thanked God. Above all, surprisingly, a great musician, Edvard Grieg, is the one who wrote 'Solveig' song' as well. One of the reasons I want to visit Norway is Edvard Grieg, and I love all his music. Thank you all who enjoy my story.

I have a similar story, Anne. I was in a life-threatening situation over a span of several months, and was lonely in a skyscraper hospital for months, when I discovered this recording. I believe that music is harmony that heals. As the final lines in Dryden's Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, set to music by Handel, says, "The dead shall live / The living die / and music shall untune the sky!" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OiH9CjMHOk4.htmlm30s

I heard Peer Gynt in Denmark together with my father (Who have played OBO (a classic instrument) for many years. There were an actor who was Peer Gynt and teller. There were also a male and female opera singer - to do Solveigs part, other than Peer Gynt part and a choir. It was wauw..... I also understand Norweigen - it helps understand what they are singing.

This is the best recording of Peer Gynt available. The violin in the Halling sounds like a fiddle, instead of a wishy-washy and non-ethnic, breathy, Romantic-era violin. The entire recording has ethnic flavor and emotional pizzaz. The tempo is not too fast, as often is a mistake with composers of Grieg's era (especially in the past 20 years; it's become trendy to speed things so fast that a listener can't distinguish notes). Not only is the delivery perfect; but it's the complete incidental music of 1 hr and 46 min, not the four- or five-movement suite. I wish there were a CD of this old recording so that I could buy it!!! Thanks to Sergio Canovas for uploading it!

@@SergioCánovasCM Thanks, can you suggest one; I did a search and am having trouble choosing. I can't locate anything on RU-vid, either, so some direction would be helpful. Best wishes...

Love it. The overall flow and continuity from the beginning to the end are masterful, and there are unique interpretations here and there. I find the increasing velocity from 25:16 through 25:30 a bit quirky, but they never go over the top and their synchronization remains comfortable.
