Overly negative review. I have a buddy who owns a pelican, and when his drive broke they sent the HD II.... not the old version of the drive. Furthermore, Hobie has its own problems: the drive well being integral to the body of the entire Kayak = Stress fractures, leaking hull. The pelican has a replaceable drive well. I plan on getting the pelican catch 130 after seeing the layout. The open fishing platform is superior, the price is right, and pelican takes care of its customers, something else I’ve heard otherwise about Hobie...... Since you seem to be comparing the two. Pelican, much better bang for the buck IMO, especially as they’re upgrading the drive and taking care of their customers!

We have owned 2 of these yaks for over a year and have owned 5 hobies. I hope your experience is better than ours. There are new hobies and used hobies that aren’t much more expensive. I stand behind my review and suggest you get something else. Tight lines brother.

I know this an old video, but I have a fix for the old HyDryve. I have fixed tons of these and suggest that others do it when they first purchase them. You save alot of money, time and frustration. I apply epoxy loc tite, tork it down, Then drill a hole through the housing and through the center of the bolt (side) holding the flipper to the assembly and stick a cotter pin in it. Others have used a screw ( drilling the hole then tapping it out ). Any way I hope this helps someone, I charge 50 dollars to do it. So you are saving yourself at least that much doing it yourself.

I've had mine about 3 years now. I had one of the old drives break just last year. Called Hobie they sent me out the HD drive second gen 2 version. Did not have any trouble out of it. But a friend of mine destroyed his Hobie. So I bought his Hobie drive with the turbo fans 180...$350... And it is 10 times better than the pelican drive. I still love the 130 because it's lightweight you could throw it over your shoulder and climb over a fence if you had to. My buddies out back he could not load it unload it without help. To me that's a big difference. Although the 130 is not stable enough for a big guy like myself to stand. In his Hobie you could do somersault in. I still love my 130. I have had the feel free Dorado. Awesome awesome kayak! But it weighs a ton. Recently sold it and bought the three water 108. It's also a beast kind of like the Dorado? So I find myself using the pelican 130 more than anything! Great video I'm sure it's helped a lot of people!

@@SlotCityFishing the HD2 does not. My Hobie drive makes a little bit more noise but it's a lot faster and just feels like it's a lot more rugged! Luckily I had a great experience with customer service! And luckily my first drive the original lasted so long. But a big difference between the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 HD. But still no comparison to the Hobie!

Good review. To all the potential new kayak anglers and/or paddle anglers looking for a pedal kayak, demo all brands to see what you like. In regards to fin style kayaks, Hobie set the standard. It seems like these other companies are trying to make the market more affordable and competitive, but fail to put out a quality product. Maybe Vibe or Lightning Strike has got it right, but can’t go wrong with a Hobie, if you know kayak fishing is going to be long term hobby for you then buy a Hobie.

i mean from what i saw from that example I mean your really running it onto thick grass wont that still put a lot of stress even on a "high grade plastic"? its not metal so it'll definitely break. speaking of which they should just make it out of carbon fiber which is as light as plastic and almost as tough as steel!

Nothing wrong with paddling but its def a bummer when u plan to pedal all day.. Gotta keep an open mind, ive broke 2 Hobie drives the same way, didnt hit nothing either, I hate that flipper style drive, the Prop style drives are better!! Just a fyi to ppl looking to buy a pedal drive kayak, I just wanted to say IF your drive breaks while ur on the water dont let it ruin your day, paddling a kayak isnt that bad at all. And I know pros that kayak fish and refuse to use pedal drives or motors on there kayaks. I rarely use my drive I like to paddle on the lakes a lot. If u wanna add something to ur kayak that will actually help u fish bettter Id suggest a power pole system. Way more important and helpful than a pedal drive or motor. If your a bass angler that is.... Great vid bro love the honesty!

Buyer beware: The shell isn't bad, stable enough, comfy; I've caught a ton of fish in the this boat. After only 70 miles (6 months) the set screw that holds the rudder cable has chewed through the cable ($40 replacement from Canada took a month,) go get 1/16" stainless steel cable from your hardware store. Now the Hydryve (direct copy from Hobie) has failed, the idler cable snapped. No replacement from Pelican except a complete "core" replacement ($369 BUT isn't available for purchase from Pelican or any retailer....which pelican site directs you to "find a retailer.") Pelican will sell you a complete Hydryve replacment for $550 (which I assume will take another month to get)....have contacted Pelican countless times in the past month, no reply. Take your money and the money you will have to spend and buy a Hobie or AT LEAST plan to buy a Hobie Mirage drive (parts are inexpensive, readily available, and fast to get,) fits right in the Pelican chassis.
