Great review. I have several MB149s and Pelikan M1000s and I have to say the build quality, feel and postability of the Pelikan pen makes it the hands-down winner between the two. Cheers, Steve
Good review. I am very fond of my M1000's. I love those nibs. I do not really "write" with those nibs, I "paint" with them. I literally draw my letters, which makes them sharp and very well formed. It is a lot of fun to write in that way.
They didn't invent it, but purchased the patent from its inventor, a Hungarian called Theodor Kovacs. With this system they released the first piston pen, the pelikan 100, in 1929
Thank you, David. I appreciate the old advertisements and historical overview. And of course the microscopic closeups. Good luck on setting up a website.
Nice! You made me loose my mind long enough to just place an order for the M1000 Green in F for around $400. Now the wait for the shipment from the U.K. 😜 I too wish blue stripe was available.
Great review. M1000 is a greatr pen. Have the M1050 customised to fine italic cursive and it's a fantastic writer. the nib customisation made a wonderful pen the best by far, in my collection, nib wise.
Thank you David, your reviews are increasingly the gold standard-- along with Matt and Stephen and also increasingly , Kerry. I love my own m1000. I too have green and wish they did the blue and red. I may go with a black at some point. I've never watched a review yet where the connection between the Souveran theme and the cap finiel is suggested as a crown. If one looks at the pen in profile the crown shape jumps out at me. Could just be my own wacky eye!! Very best! Frank from Boulder, Colorado
Great review. I completely agree with your assessment. I lean for my M1000 over my M800 more since I love the soft feel of the nib. An M1000 filled with Pelikan's 4001 Dark Green was my pen of choice for Christmas cards last year. That ink's a perfect match for the pen. Look into the M300 to complete the family. It's comically tiny compared to the M1000 but still has everything down to the same piston.
Thanks for the review David. My only issue with my Pelikan Souveran M805 is that I'm not a fan of the fairly crisp step-down at the very back of the pen. I feel they could have made the piston-filling knob just a little wider at the base to make the transition between the barrel and the knob seemless. I see the M1000 has the same design (I've seen it on the 600 as well). Cheers!
Thanks David; as always your reviews are well prepared and well executed! I always thought that the final resembled a crown. This would go along with the Souveran theme. Be Well! Frank from Boulder, Colorado
Thanks for the historical background. Haha yes the Pelikan in the add looks like it OS dropping from oil! I grew up with Pelikan pens at school (in Germany) it was what I had. But never enjoyed fountain pens back then. I think I had the wrong ones. Today I am deep in it but after the not so great Pelikan experiences I am wary of that brand. I seem to be a Lamy and Pilot girl. Haha. Seeing these flagship pens by Pelikan (which to me is synonym to school pen) is weird to me!
Thanks for sharing. That was interesting. I guess I was wrong about how they created the stripes. There was quite the collection of interesting haircuts in that video.
That is one spectacular pen. Have they added the blue? I have been having so much fun with your reviews. Great sense of humor. I don't know if it's fortunate or not but these pens are completely out of my range. Wishful thinking and the joy of learning. Thanks for the review. Robbin
Almost five years later, a thousand thanks for this review! Appelboom can deliver an m1000 for about $120 more than an m800 -- but even a year from now, would I care about the C-note?
I find it interesting that Pelikan pens are not much longer capped than uncapped. My M400 looks tiny compared to Platinum President but uncapped it’s actually same size.
$832 for a fountain pen is expensive, it should come with a good package and should write like smooth butter. I already have a Pilot Custom 823, but would like to have a Pelikan M1000 as well. I am torn between whether I should get a fine nib M1000 pen or a medium nib M1000 pen.
Another fun video, David! I love my Pelikans but you make a good point, why doesn't Pelikan make their flagship model in every single stripe? I know m600 users have the same complaint, although there are more choices than the 1000's. Fortunately m400's fit my hand, so there's a few more choices. Wishing you your bluebird! Some nice shading in that pretty ink!
Hey man, you should make a video on how to budget for buying fountain pens, how to not get too carried away and buy too much for too much money or something like that. I guess you would have enough fountain pens to buy a new house with. Maybe. How can you justify all that expense? Just wanna know. Not saying that it's bad or anything.
David, magnificent review as always. I have an M800, and keep telling myself that I don’t need an M1000, but I just don’t know. Now, if you’ll permit me once more to correct your German pronunciation. You made a comment about butchering the German, and you were right on. Unfortunately. To me, as a native German speaker, it sounds like someone running their fingernails down the blackboard. You’re trying too hard. The minor error: the final syllable in Souverän is pronounced “enn,” so just read it as if it were written “Souverenn.” It is German, after all, not French, so there is no nasal final n. (Unless there’s some proprietary pronunciation that the company uses, though I rather doubt that. But the really egregious error is the one commonly made by English speakers, and that’s the umlaut ü as in grün. It’s NOT pronounced “groon,” as you have it. In fact, “green” would be closer to the mark. So just say “green,” and no German speaker will wince. In fact, to render the precise sound, try saying “green,” and purse your lips while saying it, or even “groon” while pursing your lips, and you’ll be fairly close to it. Just as Meisterstück can be almost correctly pronounced “Meistershtick,” but NEVER Meistershtook.” Oh, I know, I’ve criticized your German pronunciation before. Forgive me. I just can’t help it. 😔 keep up the good work. Eric-linguist, retired prof, and native German speaker
I know it's an old video but I have an M1000 and love the amount of ink it provides. I'm looking for a similar - less expensive - nib and I'm thinking about getting a Pilot falcon, Pilot 912 FA or Noodler triple trail. Which of these 3 you think can write like the M1000?
Thanks for the video. I am thinking about getting a M1000. I am interested in the line variation. I have been told that if you flex that 18ct nib you risk springing it.... But I have seen several people do the line variation that you are doing here. Now that you have had it for a while what do you think/ Any issues with the nib?
I haven't had any issues with the nib. Now, I'm just using it for standard writing, I'm not flexing it on a regular basis...but it's worked well for me.
Great review. What a beautiful pen. Have you thought of working on your writing, perhaps American cursive? I’m planning to try American cursive to tidy my writing up, so I hope you won’t be offended. The writing let’s your excellent review down and your nib pressure seems heavy. Just some novice observations. No keyboard warrior intensions here.
Hi, great review. In my opinion your nib is not as perfect as it could be. In your writing example, at the beginning, we can hear that a nib groans a bit. It could be due to the fact that your write with your pen a bit rotated to the left or there are some impurities in nib tipping - like alignement, roughness of the surface and many other. It is like the nib is exhausted during writing.
Why there are visible rings inside the barrel at 6:08 , these rings affect the translucent of the barrel, some pens have this problem. Is this a DEFECTIVE manufacture?
@@FigbootonPens No, Those are not threads, We need no threads in the middle of the section. I asked Pelikan and they said that there were some slightly different in the material, so some of souveran have "threads".
I've used watercolor paper for it, and it tends to show nice shading and sheen. Not as much as tomoe river paper, but more than rhodia/clairefontaine/nuuna
David: I met you at DC last year when you were showing off your new Decoband. How would you compare the writing experience of the m1000 vs. the Decoband? Enjoy your videos!
Thanks for watching! The nibs between the two are fairly similar. The Decoband feels a bit larger, but the pen is heavier than the M1000, so that adds to the feeling, but they have very comparable flex. Hope to see you in DC again this year.
Thank you for the review David, very detailed information. If you want to see how this pen was made, checkout our How It's Made video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jB77rMt7k-I.html
@@mhergoparian174 The M1000 has more bounce and flex. It's a unique feeling for a very large nib. The Pilot feels more like a 'standard' nib, but just larger. Incredibly smooth as well.
+Figboot on Pens I got my M1000 yesturday. The nib on this thing is huge!!! But so awesome to look at :) The fine nib writes smoothly and can put down quite a bit of ink. Very pleased with it.
Hello, sorry for bothering you with such issues but I'm just a student and such an investment means a lot to me. A pen like this is a "lifetime investment". I have been following your channel for a very long time and I have watched most of your reviews regarding flex nib fountain pens. Today please help me to choose 1 between these two. For me the doubts are, 1) 912 FA is a bit scratchy if even a little amount of oil is on the paper. How big of a problem is this 2) I couldn't totally be sure if the line variation of M1000 is the same as that of 912 FA. Please let me know your thoughts. 3) Is the extra investment for M1000 really worth it? Please help me.
While they both are nice, personally, I would not care to write with a FA nib for an extended period of time. Just not my style. Whether the price of the M1000 is "worth it", is a rather subjective question...but I feel it brings more to to the table than a 912.
The retailers can purchase different packaging from the manufacturer? I never knew that and I think that’s a terrible idea, it totally destroys the brand identification. Can you imagine if Apple allowed retailers to change their packaging? So you can sell a $500 pen for $460 - But destroy the consumer experience and brand identification - who makes these horrible decisions = poor management.
Figboot on Pens oh I see. I was a bit worried when I heard those loud sounds since I'm about to purchase an M1005 demonstrator and I'm choosing between an F and a B nib. Figured that if it's this scratch, I'd order it with a B nib. I'm also left-handed so smoothness is a big factor I'm considering.
