To be fair-ish.... No. Peloton employs personal trainers for live one-on-ones and classes through their app and equipment. While the physical product would be close enough, you'd not have the option to access the other Peloton resources. There's plenty of argument to be had about value of the various products (both personally and in general), but there are services there that go beyond just the bikes or treadmills that have value to some people out there - enough that they were, and are, fairly successful as a company. Peloton just has no idea how to manage the surge in adoption, followed by mass abandonment of products that the pandemic brought with it, while keeping short-term investors who bought in, and also failed to understand that situation who are now looking to sell, happy.

There are some reasons against this false argument. 1) Not everyone gets to live in the Sub Tropics / Tropics / The Equator as a whole. For some of us Global Warming is still very much a fairy tell that Ganja Greenies tell their Children about when they want them to grow up to be Activists who want to super glue themselves in to the Road. Then there are Obese People not unlike myself that can barely make a click without nearly kealing over.* * Well that was the case about a year, and 35KGs ago. With the currently dying year, I have been using the "outdoors" more so than that Treadmill. But what was that GoT line again? Something about Winters coming? Round here that could be as early as next month. Or by latest November when it gets in to negative Temps during the Day. e.g. it will be prime Treadmill time again.

After 20 years of laptop repair I found myself overweight and fat so I started a volunteer job at my local church keeping the graveyard tidy. Grass cutting, strimming, general tidying up and some other bits which was a great way to get fresh air and some exercise. I admit that the first 6 months nearly killed me but after losing 30-40lbs I felt better and then I was offered a gardening job that paid so I took it. I don't need the money TBH but I do enjoy the exercise and the best thing is I get paid for exercising. Stop wasting money on the gym and expensive treadmills and go volunteer or take an outdoor part time job and you'll get better results doing 4 hours of hard work on a weekend than you will on your Peleton if you do 3 hours a day!!!!!

If someone sells their Peloton, it's because they aren't using it anymore. If they aren't using it, they aren't paying $40 or whatever a month subscription either. Yet if they sell it to someone else, the other person would likely start paying the monthly subscription. Now, management is faced with two options... 1) Encourage and facilitate the sale of their equipment to people who will use it. or 2) put up barriers for user to user sales so that their equipment remains in some dark basement and not longer generating recurring profit for you. Really scratching my head as to why they would take option 2.

Video game publishers tried this shit a decade ago to curtail used game sales. Claimed it was 'lost revenue' and tries to either A: completely brick the game for the second buyer or B: paywall significant enough portions that the game was unplayable without paying them an activation fee. It went about as you would expect, but game publishers had another option Peloton does not have: The product was essentially just 1s and 0s. So that's why you can't hardly buy a game on physical media anymore and even when you do all it is is an installer. It'ss also why game publishers started putting so much emphasis on pre-orders; you can't sell a pre-order secondhand so if you get gamers super hyped and release pre-order slots you can make a killing before the game even releases. Microtransactions are also a result. Publishers figured out that even if you buy the game used the MTX store is still just as lucrative as if you buy the game new, and these days the MTX store is the bulk of publisher revenue anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if Peloton is looking into monetizing their stupid treadmills this way. We're starting to see this shit creep into cars so the precedent is there. It does sadden me...NOT surprise, just sadden...that the ills which drove me away from video games as a hobby are creeping into the real world.....

@TestECull
@TestECull 17 дней назад
@@tgheretford Yep, and they conveniently ignore that the developers are A: Some of the most abused workers in America who barely see a penny off their work and often get laid off week of launch, and B: That compensation was already delivered when the game was purchased new. 🤷 What we are seeing now is that shit jumping industry...the canary in the coal mine was video games and it didnt suffocate, so here we go......

I actually live in a house with a Peloton tredmill... I can honestly say that I have used it multiple times, as it's usually too hot outside to go for a walk/run, and I only use it as a blanket/towel drying stand when one of those non-dryer-able ones get washed. It also has a pre-paid subscription because my Grandfather (who actually owns it) decided to ask for that a christmas or two ago. Honestly... I'm just glad there's a small manual button in the top right, and it isn't pay-walled (and I know it isn't because it still worked for the several years it didn't have that subscription). Moral of that story: Peloton can take that $99 surcharge for second-hand buyers and put it where the sun don't shine. If this one breaks, I'm more tempted to just build my own than buy a new one.

Electronic Arts tried something similar to this about 15 years ago. If you bought a second hand copy of one of their games you could play the offline content. But if you wanted access to the online portion of the game it was £10 payable to ea just because you didnt buy it brand new. This lasted for a couple of years before backlash and loosing sales made them change their minds.

Imagine buying a book, brand new from the book store. Then when you sell it, the new owner has to send money to the publisher to be able to crack the book, open and read it. No one would stand for that shit. Yet here we have another story of the same theme. Continuous payments to use a tangible asset that the original owner took title and possession of. There would be a pitchfork and club mob out in front of the publisher.

Hey! I run (or ran) 6 days a week religiously for years. I love running. 98% of the time it's outdoors, in a park, through streets, etc. On vacation I usually use the gym at the hotel or cruise boat. But about a month ago my knees began to hurt so I took a week off, and I started to run and they still hurt a bit. So now I run 3 days a week outside. We bought a walking pad for rainy days during covid lockdown, we have a rowing machine and a stationary bike (as my spouse doesn't know how to bike, but it's great exercise for his joints as he has bad joints). None of these devices are connected to the network. While cardio CAN be "free", not all forms ARE free, and there is nothing wrong with buying a bike that does just that, be a bike. Or a rowing machine, or treadmill if you live in a poor climate, etc. So, just stay away from online / service based cardio / equipment and you should be fine. Buy what makes your life easier and better.

Hold on, this company's business model is selling overpriced exercise equipment and selling a monthly subscription to use that equipment and they're still losing money? HOW?! Moreover, how do they think charging new customers $100 extra for something just because it was bought secondhand is going to improve things? The second-hand market for an item like this means that you are continuing to have a customer for that individual device! Otherwise, the current owner is probably just gonna take it to the dump and drop it off! If the company wanted to be good about it, they could offer existing Customers are return option where they purchase the device for what most people would sell it second-hand for. Then they get to overcharge their extra hundred dollars and still look like the good guy. (Because now it's "certified refurbished".)

Best solution I found for this is actually free, go to the mall and walk. Since everyone shops on Amazon these days, mall stays mostly empty, and they keep it a cool 72F year round. They can't sell it for $95 or $100 more. I worked for a knife company a few years back. We had started work on on-shoring our production of specific products in the US, post tariffs that went into effect around 2017. The customers were asking for this change, and there was now a financial incentive to do this. Fast forward a few years with the first product lines that get displayed at Shot Show. The predictable onslaught of comments were "you want that much for that knife?" A quality knife that costs more to produce by fellow Americans was completely rejected by those same Americans wanting cheap shit but asking for quality made-in-America products. Pelaton has to sell their products for as cheap as possible then add on everything they can to make up the difference due to "you want that much" sentiment towards everything. Not arguing for this additional purchase BS that keeps happening, but I can see where it comes from, even if the company is trying not be greedy.

Man that’s gotta be frustrating! It’s one reason a lot of companies won’t even make premium priced American Made products anymore, the people that want them often won’t fork over the cash. Then other companies are still make product abroad cheaply, but maybe a little above WalMart quality and the wealthier people pay extra just for the brand name, not really even caring about the quality not being premium…

@houserhythm
@houserhythm 17 дней назад
That's not entirely true about never using it. The key is to not put it away, though. having it right there, just needing to push a button and start running does make you more likely to run. Putting as few (mental) stepts between you and the thing you want to do, does help. For example if you want to play the guitar, don't put it in a case, in a closet, leave it in the open, nearby and you are much more likely to grab it; even though it would take 30 seconds and no physical effort to get it from the closet, mentally you have 3 more actions to do - get up, open the closet, open the case - and your subconscious will try to "convince" you that's too much. Wanna read a book? Leave it right next to where you usually sit, not in the book case. Same goes for exercise - putting on your workout clothes, going ouside - those are extra steps that will make it less likely you'll do it.

We still can disagree with our pockets. Stop buying thinks like that. Stop buying TV sets that bricks if you don't agree new terms after the sale. Stop buying cars/treadmills/anything that have features you cannot use if you don't pay more after the sale. If companies get away with it, they will continue and the problem will worsen. If sales and profits go downhill then, and only then, companies will adjust their methods. Or close.

This is fallout from the windfall they got in 2020 - 2022. Everyone staying inside and avoiding public was investing in home workout equipment. You look at the financials from those years and you'll see massive Net Gains. I believe they weren't able to produce their bikes fast enough to meet demand. 2 years later, things stabilized and return to a more normal market, and people are looking to get rid of clutter and shit they don't use... that bike or treadmill whose advertisements were calling them fat? First to go. Company was selling infinite growth to investors, and probably is still attempting to do so, rather than preparing for the inevitable crash in demand, so they are looking to scrape wherever they can to please investors and make it seem like they are still growing and competent than they are. You know, as opposed to operating with the understanding that the pandemic years were not permanent and they should proceed in a manner to remain stable when the spike drops back to pre-pandemic levels. Thanks exploitative late-stage capitalism! Yeah, a lot of bullshit out there.

TALk about getting HEFFED My wife just took her GM SUV Traverse into the dealership. It was have transmission "issues", it is just past the warranty, bought BRAND NEW, has less than 90 000k (56 000miles). Dealer changes the fluid, does a few other things. $1200 later. BUT One of the charges was $370 for a Computer "Update" for the Transmission, that if she didn't get it, would cause continued Transmission "issues' up to and including FAILURE. How's that for getting HEFFED. So you do NOT have a "choice". You need to get it in order to fix/solve the issues from a faulty glitch or bad code. You don't get it, and your transmission will continue to have "issues" right up until FAILURE at a most inopportune time. Last time I checked, Apple, Samsung and many other manufacturers do NOT charge for updates and or patches.
