In this blind microphone shootout on male vocals we compare four of John Peluso's large diaphram tube condenser mics: the P12, the 2247 SE, the P67, and the 22 251. These four mics are clones of the venerable C12, U47, U67 and 251 respectively, which are four of the most sought after microphones for vocal recordings and many other studio applications. First you'll hear the four mics solo'd and completely dry, then we'll bring them into a loose mix with mandolin and drobro as well as some reverb from our Bricasti M7 for some context. All four mics were run through our Vintech 573 preamp moules and our Apogee Symphony converter. Mic b is the smoothest sounding of them all. as far as natural with out any hype. that being said mic d is the most mid forward of them all. I would go with mic b because i can eq it sound like any of the others.

D does it for me in that mix. It provides a BIG sound that sits really well in the mix. My guess is D is the 2247. If I was shopping for a mic, I'd check it out through Soundpure. Not only am I not angry with them. I appreciate the effort they take to do what the mic companies themselves don't!

Loved all of your videos! Liked C and D the best. Due to the heavy bottom I would guess that the 47 is B.

Mic C Sounds amazing and full (I'm guessing the 47). Mic D really stands out (I'm guessing a 67). Any luck with a breakdown of what A, B, C, and D are? Also, Peluso has the new P 49; I see it didn't make the video. Any particular reason not to show it off?

Not a single person said mic A. Mic A was my favorite. I own the 22 251 and am not sure I love it.

C, D, A, B. In order of my preference. I think A is the P12, B: 22 251, C: 2247 SE, D: P67. Just my thoughts. Btw, thanks for this. You should do this with female vocals as well.

A sounds dark (251?), B sounds dark (P67?)' C sounds bright (p12?) D sounds big (p47) - thats my guess.

The 22 251 is the perfect vocal mic for a dense mix. It needs no eq. Perfect.

I actually agree with this. At face value the others sound terrific maybe even better, but they would need to be tamed else they begin to irritate your ears. I also feel like the 251 allows you to interpret the voice for yourself rather that it telling you what to believe.

I think they'll tell you which one is which if you call em. While I'm not brought to fury or even mild irritation, I will say that the blind a/b between the Peluso mics and the mics they shoot to capture is better than a 4 way blind test between 4 radically different mics. I just paid for the the P67 on ebay, I can't wait for this dude to ship it so I can try it out! :D

I have the Peluso P20 running thru Vintech Audio x7i, with Distressor EL8, Sounds so wonderful, also have a Peluso 2247 se running thru a Summit Audio MPC 100 Mic preamp, bypass the compress on preamp, going thru Distressor, OMG the sticky vocals, have Neumann u8ai, (Manley VTL CR-3a) is one of the best mics I ever heard, trust me, that's why U can't find them

jeez..please be accurate when you talk about the U67 frequency response..2-3 k rise? Have you ever used this mic? the 67 is flat straight through 2-3 K until about 7k where it rises..it is very neutral mic with a nice bit of air...You're showing your limitations..the script you're reading is prob talking about the U47, which has a more agressive feel to it...THAT is the 2-3 k area..
