Pembrey Country Park wasn’t always the magnificent Carmarthenshire parkland that people see today, previously it was the site of Pembrey’s Royal ordnance factory which produced munitions during WW1 & WW2.
In this Vlog I set out to discover the wartime remains of the park and nearby airfield, the historic relics of shipwrecks along Cefn Sidan beach and the role the area has today with regular and spectacular beach landings by military aircraft.

My grandfather, then a fairly newly qualified industrial chemist, worked for Nobel at Pembrey during WW1. I remember a couple of things- first that on at least one occasion there was a risk that one of the buildings was about to explode. Grandpa had to get everyone out of the building, then take a deep breath and run back through, turning on all the stopcocks and so flooding it. Secondly, that he- and presumably any other younger men working there- had an official letter tocarry about his person and show to anyone who asked why he was not 'doing his bit' in uniform. It stated that he had volunteered for the colours, but had been refused because he was doing vital war work. He kept this letter for the rest of his long life- he died in 1973, aged 86. Perhaps it 'proved' something to him as well, because his brothers and brothers-in-law, all fought...Finally- this was where he met my Grandmother, who was one of those girls who made the shells/ ammo. She lived to 83, dying of a broken heart a few months after Grandpa.

This is a fantastic video presentation Jay. I've lived here all my life: played on the beach and swam in the sea, and now regularly walk and explore the beach and forest paths with my dog. But this film has shown me things I haven't seen before - that I've probably walked by without noticing. Thank you.

The people who lured ships onto the dunes using bonfires as beacons were called Gwŷr y Bwyelli Bach (the men with little axes or hatchets)

It was originally NEF, Nobel Explosives Factory, then became HMF Pembrey during WW1 and later renamed ROF Pembrey during WW2. Being local I explore the area almost daily whilst walking my dogs and yet after over a decade researching it’s history, I still from time to time find something new. Excellent footage btw.👍

Thank you Bernie very kind. Great place to visit. Always love to explore there and so much hidden away amongst the overgrowth and trees.

@@JayCurtis I noticed you found the train platform that ferried workers into the HMF gun cotton production area of the forest, as during WW1 there were two factories working independently from one another.

Quite upset that the miniature railway wasn't mentioned when it's been there since the late 80s otherwise nonetheless quite educational and have been waiting for some history on the site

Hi Matty thanks for the feedback. Sadly the train wasn't in operation on any of my visits and was closed off so I couldn't get any footage but thanks for watching.

@@lauraevans8163 I mean, there's no need for that is there? I'd like to think that my club is a bit more interesting than looking at a miniature golf course or a snowless ski slope, no? Or the literal brand new cycle track? What's the history of them?

Think you've got it wrong there pal. Pembrey ROF magnificent it was back in the day when navigating your way through the old factory with massive holes in the roads where the bombs had landed during the war, the beach a lot further away then you accessed through a gap in the fence and all free. Then the council moved in and covered all the history over with grass, changed the name and charge you for the privilege, with no mention of the lives lost and all to be forgotten. Lacking in respect for the people who protected the land you live on today.
@JayCurtis

Hi Charlie my Vlog is not about the wrongs and rights of the land and its owners but to share the history of the site. I don't agree that people are being forgotten as that's exactly the opposite of what my video does as you'll see from the countless comments.

I too can remember the journey through the rubble past the cooling towers and The hole in the fence to access the beach. To my mind the "country" park is slowly being spoiled by gradual over developement, Charlie has a point for many years there was at least a vistor centre that did give some education of the area history long since gone and replaced by a way overpriced cafe. Good docmentary though thnk you.

Thanks mate! Very kind so fascinating had no idea there was so much hidden history. Ill be honest there was a few weird moments in the forest near the command centre as I was the only one there during filming and there was no wind but when I came back up from inside the tripod was on the floor.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hs1CAp5nwPQ.html most haunted done some filming down there years ago now still a good watch plenty of footage newer stuff on the tube but it's quite scarey to think how many people were lost down there, still good to think it provided such a valuable resource to the war and crazy that its hidden and unknown to most people. ❤️ Always worth taking a look back at some footage see if you caught anything with a harder look 🤷‍♂️ certainly on the dodgy side doing a night take down there haha.
