Not content with just one model railway I've been building a second smaller one in 009 gauge with DCC power and these are a few shots of the layout in it's still uncompleted state. Baseboard is 4' x 2' and the Bachmann Baldwin is fitted with a Zimo decoder and Digitrains sound. For anyone interested in the buildings, the two cottages are by Petite Properties and the water tower, station building and goods shed were scratch built by Danowen Models, who can be contacted here; roygoodacre1953@aol.com
See here • Return To Pen Gwyn - A... for an updated version of Pen Gwyn and here • Morning showers at Pen... for a further video.

Very impressive Austin, the sound chip in that little Baldwin, is superb, and the whole layout is looking wonderfully authentic.

Many thanks Bob. I'm definitely a convert to sound in the locos now and the Baldwin is such a lovely model and came with the tiny speaker already mounted in the bunker. I've got the Quarry Hunslets on order so hoping they are as good. Trust you liked the name of the layout!

What a relaxing video, Austin, and what a level of attention to detail! Brilliant sound on the loco and the added value of filming in private means no distracting loud chatter. If it's this good when unfinished, I look forward to seeing the completed version. Kind regards, Bob.

Thanks Bob, glad you found it relaxing as that's the sort of feel I'm after with this layout. Not far off completion now actually, just some more little details here and there. Good point about filming at exhibitions as the noise level can often be very distracting

Very nice Austin, reminds me of the 009 layout (Bryngoch) I built several years ago and later sold to make way for an N Gauge layout (Middle Elmton). Given the excellent ready to run stock now available I am very tempted to have another go at 009.

very nice job, i really like the buildings on the layout and loco sounds great with the digitrains sound i was considering going dcc with my 009 but with most of my locos been kit built on old graham farish or arnold chassis it would be to much hassle
@acw71000
@acw71000 5 лет назад
Thanks very much. I thought I'd try DCC for this little layout and it does allow for some great slow running. Trouble is there aren't a whole lot of locos in 009 that are ready for DCC. The Baldwin was just a straight plug in chip, not sure I'm up to any hard wiring! I'll put a link in the description for the buildings.

I had seen the Peco Setrack plan 5 for 00 gauge and thought it would be good in 009 and adapted it slightly. With hindsight I wish I'd included a run round loop at the station but I'm hoping to build another modified version before long. Thanks for watching

The trees are amazing! How do you make them or are they bought?
@acw71000
@acw71000 4 года назад
Thanks for watching Steve. The trees are made with sea foam and then using the cheapest hairspray you can find (as they are more sticky) spray the sea foam trees and then I used Noch leaves (ref.07152) sprinkled over followed by more hairspray to seal them You can then add other scatter materials over to blend with the Noch leaves. They seem to last a long time, some of the leaves will drop off but its easy to just redo them in time. I found Woodland Scenics burnt grass scatter worked well in conjunction with the Noch

@@acw71000 I have a plan for a steam age small shunting layout. I have set out a full scale plan by cutting paper to the size of the points and track so I can visualise operations and buildings. I would love to create something to the quality of your model, but feel daunted by the challenge.
@acw71000
@acw71000 3 года назад
This was only the second model railway I'd attempted after 30 odd years away from the hobby so I definitely wouldn't feel daunted. I feel this is an improvement on my earlier Harz themed layout as you learn as you go along and make mistakes along the way but it's all part of the fun

@@acw71000 Yesterday I took the first real step by ordering some goods wagons of various types. I couldn't order track as the shops seem to be sold out. I don't yet have track or locos or a controller, no baseboard, no materials and few tools. The journey has begun, but I don't know where the train stops. Any suggestions?
@acw71000
@acw71000 3 года назад
First step should be the baseboard, then that will encourage you to continue! A lot of products are difficult to find at present because of the pandemic and most items are made in China. You will need to decide whether to use flexible track or setrack and also whether you want DC or DCC power. Gaugemaster controllers are good for DC and a good basic controller for DCC is the NCE Powercab. Getting the baseboard done is the first step and then you can put your paper plans onto it and see if everything is as you want
