Pen Mail and review: Lamy Studio Matte Rose, Lamy Aion Deep Dark Blue, Kaweco Perkeo Infrared fountain pens.
All three of these fountain pens are 2023 Special Edition fountain pens.
2023 has been a pink and dark themed year, with “Barbenheimer” taking over social media and marketing during this summer’s blockbuster films and the two Lamy fountain pens really do look the part.
The Kaweco Perkeo is not a colour that I was expecting - at all… If you like pink fountain pens, it’s a pen that you might want to see.
From Cult Pen’s website “a powerful red, which moves along the spectrum from pink to orange, depending on how you view it.”
I doubt that I got a dud (colour), but that ain’t how I’d describe the colour of this fountain pen!
The Kaweco Perkeo thankfully takes standard international ink cartridges (unlike the proprietary Lamy ink cartridges) and a ruby red ink cartridge is supplied with this pen.

I got the Perkeo Infrared with a fine nib, and luckily its a really smooth writer. It was a bit more pinky red than I expected! I've also got 4 Kaweco sports all with medium nibs - 3 write nicely, 1 needs a wet ink or it skips quite a bit. Kaweco quality control puts me off buying more. The Perkeo was pretty cheap so I took a chance and got lucky. Lamy are much better on their QA. Thanks for the reviews, always informative.

My first fountain pen when I recently rediscovered the joy of pens and ink was a Perkeo - nearly put me off it was horrendous. But I also got a Lamy Safari in petrol ( hidden in a Paperchase long after its release so I couldn't believe my luck) and that was a completely different experience. It came with a pack of petrol ink cartridges and that was pure joy!

I’m glad that your Lamy Safari Petrol is good - hold onto that one, it’s sought after these days!

Veey nice selection of pens. I have been told that Parker cartridges will work in a Lamy pen. I have not tried it myself, though. I am shocked that the Kaweco nib did not work out of the box. They are usually work straight out of the box. It is also a shame that the Perkeo cannot be eyedropper filled. Kaweco is missing an opportunity, especially since converters are not included. Lamy does the same thing. Why? How much would it cost to include a converter? I find it disturbing. I would love to use the Studio but the metal section is not one for me. If there was some sort of texture added to the grip area, and not the grip of a Safari, it would be an excellent pen for me. My hands tend to be oily, even without KFC chicken! I have not thought about the Aion. It looks very well made. Excellent first impressions, Rob.

It irks me that companies are too tight fisted to include converters. (However, I really, really dislike Lamy converters - I refill Lamy cartridges rather than use one of their converters.) I think that there was a matte black Lamy Studio a few years ago which had a matte, grippy section, though I don’t know about the availability and price for one of these, so it may not be worth your time trying to find one.

There is an all black Studio with rubberised grip - a little more expensive but I have my eye on that one. So beautiful! There is also a steel Studio with the same grip but cheaper. Don't know if you can change the grips but that would be a good idea if you want other colours than black or steel.

I've only ever bought 2 Kaweco Sports and both nibs needed a fair bit of tinkering. I put Kaweco down with Jinhao for their nib quality - in my experience. One would think a German company would be much more quality conscious.

I've bought several Kawecos: 4xSports, a Cult Pens Mini, and a Supra. All the nibs have been excellent. In fact, the Medium nib that came with my Skyline Sport is my favourite writer of all. Sounds like you've been rather unlucky. 😞

I’ve had a lot of really dodgy nibs from Kaweco and this is up there with the worst of them. A German manufacturer in my opinion should have good QC… but one of the least reliable cars for years now is Audi, so maybe the Germans have lost their previously high standards of engineering and quality somewhat.

Really, at one point, almost all pen manufacturers have turned out junk. Early LAMY/Artus, Parker a lot of the time now, even Montblanc had a time they are just a cheap pen that wasn't great. Currently, I blame the pen manufacturers for the frankly bullsh*t that it's insanely expensive to produce their own nibs, so just relying on mainly 2 manufacturers. There's a thread on Fountain Pen Network of a guy who had a jeweler make a nib. Was reportedly not that difficult for a jeweler, out of 14K gold, for less than the current nib manufacturers would have you believe it costs. Even "bespoke" ones like the modern Conway Stewart claims, are really just nib holders for Jowo or Bock. And even those who make their own nibs can get it wrong occasionally. LAMY claims to test each steel nib, but it's really just dipping into ink to see if it makes a mark. Can get a mark from a pretty bad nib... As Rob has shown fairly often. Fortunately, with fountain pens being more of a hobby today, it's common for people to learn to do the small things necessary to get a pen writing, usually. It can be a nuisance, but possible. 😁

This was an extremely helpful review. Very thorough. I love the Lamy brand for value and consistency. I have 3 Kaweco Sport fountain pens. One has a fine nib, the other two are mediums. The fine nib was absolute trash. It was shockingly bad. The two medium nibs are absolutely brilliant writers. They are smooth and wet. From many reviews that I’ve seen, and comments that I’ve read, kaweco has very serious quality control issues. Thanks for all that you do Rob.

Once again, almost persuasive enough to have me get a new pen.😁 In spite of the nib issues that can happen. But, it's still vintage for me. Recently a first series yellow Esterbrook CH (black jewels, pastel instead of bright yellow) with a 2314-B (Relief broad, the fountain pen version of the 314, more a fine, dip pen used by JRR Tolkien. Kind of an oblique broad stub), an unknown model Platinum, pre 1969 (older globe logo) with an aerometric filler, branded "President" to avoid confusion with Platignum for the Western markets, a later production Esterbrook student pen (cartridge only. Fortunately with an empty cartridge. They're proprietary and out of production since 1971.😁), a post 1955 Esterbrook LK "Deluxe", and 2 Platinum pocket pens, one with a 14K nib and one with an 18K nib. Yes, with my confessed love of bottled ink, dipping my toe into cartridge only pens.😁 The reason for the hole in the Perkeo barrel is they're student pens, and it's done to reduce the choking hazard. Kids WILL put the oddest things in their mouths... And I hope you have success getting it working properly. The joys of modern mass production nibs... Hope you are having a lovely weekend!

Thanks Paul! I remember when holes in pen caps appeared in the 1980s to allow air to pass through them into the wind pipe in the event of them being swallowed. However, in the case of the Perkeo, it’s the barrel which has holes and the cap doesn’t (otherwise the nib would always dry out) and I can only assume that the barrel holes are there to mitigate the chance of asphyxiation from 50% of the pen… or Kaweco really did want to prevent people from eyedroppering the Perkeo.
@paulherman5822
@paulherman5822 9 месяцев назад
@@FountainPenJourney Could be like the Wing Sung Sport knock-off. Just a crap design. 😁 And holes were common for caps for decades. I currently have my later 1930s Parker Challenger inked up, and it has 2. The original idea was to alleviate pressure difference to try and stop burping when uncapping.
@FountainPenJourney
@FountainPenJourney 9 месяцев назад
@paulherman5822 oh yes! I had forgotten about that pen! I was definitely going to buy one until Chris Rapseik(?) tried to eyedropper one in his review without realising that they had holes at the end of the barrel! That was one of the funniest fountain pen fails I have ever seen.
@paulherman5822
@paulherman5822 9 месяцев назад
@@FountainPenJourney On top of that, VERY scratchy, and the nib is glued in, if I remember correctly.
@FountainPenJourney

@paulherman5822 what stopped me from buying any of those Wing Sung Kaweco Ice Sport rip offs was the unusual, seemingly proprietary cartridge that it used. My next thought was that it wouldn’t matter because they looked like perfect eyedropper fountain pens, but clearly that wasn’t an option! 😂

Yeah Kaweco has been hit or miss for me. My first one was fantastic so I bought another one which sucked. You know who has fantastic nibs is Faber Castell. I have four of their pens and all write beautifully. I just wish they would get more creative with their pen bodies/casings.
@FountainPenJourney

Faber Castell really could do with a bit of a push with their designs. I enjoy my FCs very much but they are dull-looking.

I have to say that I find the Perkeo the dullest of the Kaweco range. And yes, when I watched videos of this model, I did wonder what they were talking about. It's clearly pink!!! With that nib, this is a massive FAIL!
@debbybrown5687

I would agree with you as I think the quality of the Perkeo is way below that of the Sport. I have three Perkeos, not quite sure why?! One with a fine nib writes beautifully and the other two with medium nibs write very erratically ink-flow-wise. I also don't like the grip. Probably going to give them away, even the one that writes nicely because I don't like the grip.
@archivist17
@archivist17 9 месяцев назад
@debbybrown5687 That sort of grip really doesn't work well for me. I'm left-handed, and have changes from side- to under-writing, so my grip is slightly off, but it's close enough to he irritating. My index finger sits slightly more towards the top of the section, and this sort of pen leaves a ridge underneath my pad

Don't know if you can change the grips but that would be a good idea if you want other colours than black or steel. And there is an all black Perkeo which seems to have a quite good PVD covered nib. You can exchange the nibs between the Sport and Perkeo. 😇🩵🙏🙌
