Using a Pencil to find out the hardness of a lead alloy. This is useful in reloading. Buying a hardness tester is better and way more expensive.
But this will get you in the ball park.

Back in the day we used to use this method for testing the hardness of paint coatings when running quality control in paint manufacturing.. Not sure it they still do it this way as that was 25 years ago... The test required the pencil lead to be sanded to a true 90° flat tip... no point. Hold the pencil at about 60° from horizontal to the surface being tested.. if it digs in then go down 1 hardness... Once you find the point where it will not dig in the hardness is between the last 2 leads (the one that did dig in vs the one that would not)

Thank you i bought a set of pencils and found that they are more accurate than the lee tester .

These are artists drawing pencils...not draftsman's but they will work the same.

Read Lee’s book. Unless you shoot above 1100 fps, it’s not a big deal. I’ve bought “ hard cast bullets, more leading occurred than my home mix. Fingernail test? Anyone? No lead in barrels? That’s the truth. They didn’t produce lead bullets because it was cheap, it was and is lethal. Modern people

Thanks for your effort on bullet lead hardness testing. But what you are using is not a Mechanical Pencil ! I have used mechanical pencils with different grades of lead installed and that works fine. But so that no one is mislead these are these standard graphite and wood pencils !

I am by no means an expert......but those do not look like mechanical pencils. lol Anyway, just picking on you. This is an excellent video. I didn't know you could do this. Thank You!

Lol you are correct. (You are technically correct, the best kind of correct..) (Im my very best "secret agent Maxwell Smart, also known as Agent 86. " voice) Would you believe mechanical (drafting) pencils? I have called them Mechanical Pencil's ( I really don't know why i call them that ) I should of said Drafting pencils.

You don't have to "Get Smart" with me, 86. What would 99 think? Seriously, this is a cool pencil lead trick for measuring lead hardness. I'm cheap and was looking for other ways to test lead for bullet casting and came upon your vid. I appreciate it! I visited your website and seen the video on using a zippo for wind direction. I know a neat little trick for waterproofing a zippo and it also keeps the fluid from evaporating over time. Take a small bicycle tube and cut about a 1" section out of it. Then slip the piece of tube up on your lighter at the opening. When you want to open the lid, you simply roll the rubber tube down like a condom. Then roll it back up when done. My neighbor is a mountain man type prepper and he showed me the trick. I've dropped my zippo in a glass of water to test and it works. Plus your fluid lasts much longer.

Technically correct, they are mechanical drafting pencils... Mechanical does not refer to the method of operation... it refers to the field of use... Mechanical drafting... Know this from personal experience... I am old enough to remember when all drafting was done by pencil on a board (before computer CAD). Had my 1st job as a mechanical drafter.. went through thousands of these pencils...
