(39 minutes long) With over 200 knives that qualify as "penknives" in my collection; the first step was to limit the search to just over 30 knives with two blades operating on a single back spring. I discuss the different styles that can be classified as pen knives and choose my top five favorite within my collection. Yes, its a long video but then there are over 30 knives in the video! So if you 're into penknives, there's plenty of eye candy to enjoy.

My father always had a Case Pen knife in his pocket. I favored a Craftsman (Sears) 4-blade ‘Camp’ style knife - essentially, the same style as the basic pocket knife issued by the US Military…all services…except for the Steel scales on the Military knife. I worked backstage in theatre through high school, college, graduate school, and beyond. It was a very useful tool.

Oh geez.. I've been holding off buying a SAK Excelsior (formally pocket pal).. has been calling my name' all week.. when I was a cub scout leader (in a poor little town) I bought all the boys their knives (with parents approval). U.S. made Old Timer (carbon) locking pen knife... And bought one for me too 😊.. I really liked that knife.. still have it but it's on a shelf now.. a pen knife is a perfectly relevant knife.. mine got used (a lot).. current EDC is a SAK Walker.. waited all week for the episode! Good work! 👍

The ones with the embossed hunting scenes and so forth are the stuff! They are little works of art for your pocket. I have two Berettas and they among the favorites of my collection.

I love learning something new, and watching your channel never fails to teach me something. I grew up with traditional knives, but after I got out of the service, I went with a Gerber EZ out in ATS-34. I kind of skipped traditionals for decades, and only recently started getting back into them. Sometime in the 1980's I got a small red Victorinox executive, and it's been on my keychain ever since then. I am trying to get one of every typical traditional pattern, and most of mine are Rough Ryder's. I have a Levine's guide to Knives 3rd edition coming in & it should help me learn more about the fascinating world of traditional knives.

Really enjoyed this - highly educational. I didn't really get the difference between 'pocket knife' and 'penknife' - in my childhood being raised in the north of England, all folding/pocket knives were just called penknives. Thanks to this video, I have learned a bit more - clearly all penknives are pocket knives, but only some pocket knives are penknives (have I got that right Tobias?) - it seems to get a little muddier beyond that, but I think you're saying that a penknife should have a single spring (unlike that Case or Camillus!), equal ends (unlike the Case!), small(ish) proportions, a blade at either end, and one of these blades must be a traditional pen blade. Nice to see Rough Ryders being taken seriously!
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 года назад
The thing is, in England, any small knife is a penknife. And in America, any small knife is often called a penknife. But these all have their origins as a quill, then later penknife, which at first was a small fixed blade and later became a small folding pocket knife with a long and short spear blade. The smaller blade was used for sharpening the the quill. Overtime just about any small knife pocket knife became known pen knife, especially in England. Jack knives were larger heavier knives with just one blade and was often attributed to being carried by sailors, hence the name Jack; a nickname for sailors. Eventually in America, if the knife had multiple blades opening from both ends it was a Penknife, but if all blades opened from the same end it was a Jack knife. But over time, it has gone back to if it is a small knife, regardless of blade arrangement, it was a penknife and if it was a large knife then it was a jack knife. To make matters worse, large knives are also called a clasp knife! For this reason, I try to clarify what i mean when I'm referring to a specific knife as other definitions are just as correct or acceptable.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias That's as fascinating as it's illuminative! Many thanks for that insight into the history - it's so easy for a relative newcomer to get misled by the nomenclature.

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 года назад
After the Classic SD, the Spartan is my favorite SAK to collect. It's a classic. I'f you've got to swap scales, I'd suggest going with plus scales so that you have a slot for the ink pen. They usually come with the pen and the little screwdriver!

@@KnifeChatswithTobias mine did not come with the pen nor do I want one, but I wush I could aquire a custom made pair of scales made from kevlar, fyber glass and couted in NATO ballistic nylon both for my 93 Soartan and my 111 Soldier, granted I did afix the 111 scales to it with Poxipol after I had strip and wash it from when I accidentally dropped in my trash bin.

I have a 1920’s Case 6263 Eisenhower green bone with swedged blades and diamond shaped shield. It would have made your top 5 if you had one. I have a Case m.o.p. With nickel liners and pins special factory order small 01 pattern that is like a small Eisenhower from 1979. The only Case knives I own and both patterns are no longer made. Case has deleted all pen knives except for the small square end pen knife and they made about 20 different patterns of pen knives. I would not touch any Case stuff made post 1970’s. It is sad what has happened to Case over the last 50 years since the family sold the company in the early 70’s
