True enough that all graphite-frame lever drag reels of EVERY brand are now made somewhere in Asia. However, Penn makes over 30 different reel models, plus another 11 "stock" bail/color options, plus everything in the "Custom Shop", in the same plant in Philadelphia, PA, USA, where they have always been made. The "threshold" for "made in USA" for Penn is at about $249 retail, and is simple economic reality. 2 new USA-made Penn models debuted this year, and 4 more will debut next year.

You might want to look at an Avet MXL MC. It has built in cast control and would help with the casting.

well i am currently spooled with 30# big game mono on my old penn jigmaster but if i purchase a lever drag reel i will most likely be spooling it with 50 to 65 lb power pro. the dead baits im casting are (in freshwater terms) relatively large and usually within the half to a pound range and i generally throw dead baits from shore rather than from my boat so i would be casting an average distance of around 60 to a hundred feet. i can cast with my jigmaster pretty well but ocassionally birdnest

No levelwind. All round reels are considered conventional. I have not personally tried casting with this model but you can do it. How far do you need to cast? Are you fishing with braid?

Have you tryed casting with tbis reel? I really want one for pike fishing ( yes I know its overkill but I like round reels, bait clickers and lever drags lol) I would like to use it for dead bait fishing and I feel a clicker and lever drag fits the bill perfect. I have an old penn jigmaster 500 that I currently use and I can cast with it but birdsnest once in a while. Does this have a levelwind or is it conventional?

I got one of these recently love the reel. On the lever you have free spool then there is a dot on the next one up. What setting is that?

Good day, I bought 6 sql30ld's from my local tackle shop, its really great reel , I use it for offshore trolling , I have a small problem though the reels does not free spool freely, is there someway to sort this.?

If the drag adjustment is too tight (thumbspool/wheel on the right above the crank) then they will do that. Loosen that up and it will freespool perfectly.
