The "Fighting Switch" or "Dog Override" switch is also good to use not only as a drag saver... but, if you know how many feet/inches each revolution of the crank lets out, it can be used as a depth counter to let your line out to a specific depth where you know the fish are. I use mine on my Kokanee rod and I can target the fish repeatedly in the strike zone. It's basically a very accurate, reliable and mechanical line counter that will never fail you.
Bars are probably Newell, maybe the spool too. Clamp definitely isn't Newell. Squidder jr conversion kits use to be popular around California in the albacore days. The anti reverse switch on my squidder has been modified to disable it. The new drag kits available for this reel really does help it stay modern enough to fish. Especially with an upgraded handle and stainless steel sleeve. I fish mine with 5-7pounds of drag easy. Always fun to bust it out early in the season to catch football tuna.
Yes - they are still very effective. The drawback against modern reels is the low speed retrieve and lesser max drag, but overall casting and fishing with it is a joy. Best wishes - Dennis

Another great video Dennis. I had a similar issue with the eccentric spring on a Jigmaster 505HS. The tag end of the spring needed to be filed flush, because it actually scored a groove in the back of the eccentric jack over the years.
That happens a lot more than you may think. Those springs have variances in the length of the arm and with use poke through more than they should. Best wishes - Dennis
Me again, thank you for all your help. I am in the hunt for a Squidder but know nothing other than watching your videos. I want to surf fish, living on se Florida coast , and liking the idea of a high speed reel. How can I tell the high speed reel apart from the standard and what should I consider when shopping online as to what to look for or stay away from. Of course I will need a rod too , I am a 77 year old beginner. Thank you for all you do.
OK - the best thing to do is an internet query when you narrow your search for reels. There are plenty of resources that will tell you the retrieve ratio, spool capacity and number of ball bearings. A Squidder is a nice casting reel with good capacity, but it has a relatively low retrieve ratio, so working Jigs and metals that need higher relieve ratios is more difficult. Start by going to a reputable reseller's site, like bass pro or Tackle Direct and search the reels for additional information - Dennis
That is a set screw to help lock the handle nut. Boat engine vibration and general usage can cause that handle screw (nut) to shake loose - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi Dennis, Another great video. We spoke a year ago you live a Colonia NJ and I grew up in Woodbridge proper. I started to do repair work and cleaning for some charter boats on the Jersey shore 3 years ago so I'm still learning. I'm having a problem with a Penn 100 Beachmaster, the reel is almost new, very clean when I open the right side up. However even after I removed the HT 100 drags, greased them the reel doesn't turn freely. Any thoughts? Many thanks, be well stay safe, Bill K
Hi Dennis Can you explain the Squidder 140 &146 color variations and side plate graphics? Black,(has 2 different graphics) Dark maroon and light maroon. Can you date the reels by this information Thank you. Dan
Dan - the reels originally came with the black side plates that were etched with the fishing scene when it was introduced int he early 1940s. In the 1970's Penn changed the side plate color to Maroon. These were changed back to black in the 1990s. Unfortunately, I cannot be more specific on the dating - Thanks for asking
Power handles are a matter of preference. You can use the bigger Jigmaster or Long Beach 24-66 is you like. The gear sleeve mount is the same as your 146. Dennis
