This video shows the complete rebuild of a Penn Squidder fishing reel. It uses the model 140 wide frame, but also applies to the 145 narrow frame chassis. I HAVE 2 140s. WHAT A SAILFISH REAL WITH 20LB MONO. THEY ARE SO EASY TO HANDEL LARGE LINE CAPACITY NICE DRAG AND VERY SMOOTH CRANKING. LOVE IT!! IT's A PENN

Thank you for this video! My girlfriend's father had a couple of them and unfortunately one was sold, but I kept the other and am hoping to use it. This maintenance video is going to be of great help, you make it look very easy.

I was directed to your videos from a very intelligent man who is helping me service my penn reels. I wanted to make a comment and thank you for your video. It has a lot of information and it is really well done. If you read this and want to respond... What is your favorite Penn reel to use? To work on?

Penn made a lot of reels for the common man. (me). they were relatively inexpensive and durably built to last a long time. I am a conventional reel guy, so the Penn Reels I like are the Squidder, the 350 Levelwind, the 3/0 Senator and the Penn 10 small frame level wind.

What’s good about this video if he didn’t change the bearings . That’s what I was looking for change of bearing . I don’t think he had any intention of taking of these bearing .

I have a 140 that was given to me... I’ve been trying to clean it... it appears to have grease from years ago that no one ever tried to clean... I’ve got most of it off but there is still some on the ends.. what wld u recommend for cleaning it? I’m a pro at taking apart, cleaning and greasing more modern reels but I’ve never tried one like this.. I’m absolutely in LOVE WITH IT AND CANT WAIT TO GET IT CLEANED & greased to use!

Try a brand called Purple Power. It is generally available at auto parts stores, Wal-Mart and online. It is an industrial strength degreaser and a free kitchen scrubby pad, like a section of Scotch-brite. I have had good success with this combination and it is generally non-abrasive while doing a good gob of guttering rid to grease, fish Cales, etc. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I enjoy your videos very much. My squidders look better than ever. I have one question for you. Have you tried removing the knob from the handle? I am trying to replace one, but no idea how. Thanks in advance.

Yes I have - If you are going with an aftermarket knob, you can remove the handle from the reel and drill out the peened end of the knob from th underside. Once you clear the top, use a pliers to snap off or pull it out by grasping the sahft under the knob - Dennis

What are the dimensions of the two spool bearings? And are ceramic bearings available for the 140? The picture on the sideplate shows someone surf fishing.

I am not sure of the dimensions. A good source for the ceramic bearing is Boca Bearings. They show there are products available for the squidded. u think they make boca bearings for these? I had a 140 at one time. Regret getting rid of it. but it cast like a dream with a 10ft. med heavy surf rod

I'm not sure as the bearings are pressed into the case and the adjuster cap. Best to check with Boca Bearings. - Dennis

I have a 140 and noticed when the plastic pin which the eccentric jack rides on. can i still use the reel like this or do you recommend i purchase a whole new side?

I think you are saying that the pin is missing or broken off - Yes? That pin guides the Jack and keeps it straight. My guess is that you can use it, but that eventually the jack will slip and the free spool will not operate because the Jack will jam the yoke if skewed. I would look to get a replacement - Try EBAY for a used one.. You don't need new, unless you want it.

15-20# mono max monofilament. The lighter the monofilament, the further it will cast - Dennis

I just purchased one of these but it has a burgundy spool as well. At what approximate year did the burgundy spool change to the metal spool?

They plastic spool was always an option for the Squidder. The plastic spool was lighter and could cast farther that the metal one. The burgundy Squidders were around in the 70-80s

My dad says that this reel is called the penn squidder because it's shaped like a squid long and narrow... is this true?

I haven't heard that one before. These reels were popular for jigging squid to be used as bait for larger fish. My guess is that was the name given to it when the designers were engineering the reel. Thanks

Jesus - it depends if you are trying to sell them as a lot or one off. If you want top dollar, then you are best selling retail, one at a time on EBAY or another auction site. If you want a fair price and want to sell the whole lot, then you will probably be selling to someone who is going to resell these and not use them personally.
