The penny pandemic is still RAGING across America!! And now the liberal media is so OBSESSED with fads like a "global health crisis" that they re suddenly IGNORING their previous pet projects? In an election year?? Where's they're handing out billions and even TRILLIONS of pennies to people for "rent" and "food"? COINCIDENCE?!? Re-elect Trump and he will make the penny FUNGIBLE again! ...I'm sorry. I don't know why I was compelled to write this. I think my brain and heart are broken.

In Canada, we got rid of the penny in 2012. Now prices are just rounded to the next whole number. It saves time. It saves weight in your wallet. It means charities get more money via those spinning wheels young children love and it means the government saves money by not printing useless coins. It's a win-win for everyone. The fact that the United States STILL hasn't gotten rid of the penny is ludicrous.

I did an experiment awhile back in the cafeteria where I worked. I put a penny on top of a nickel on top of a napkin dispenser. They stayed there for a few hours. I noticed later the nickel was gone but the penny was still there. Note this: The penny was on top of the nickel. It was MORE work to just take the nickel than to just grab both of them. This tells me the penny has a NEGATIVE value. They are not worth the cost of counting them, or picking them up if they fall. Good riddance!

@Iconoclasher
@Iconoclasher 5 лет назад
@@Serai3 It's still money 💵 . No one is arguing that point. Some of us value TIME more than money. If I drop or find a penny, will I pick it up? No way. That's taking a few seconds out of my life (time) with essentially no benefit of return (purchasing power). The only "gain" you achieve is the physical exercise of retrieving that penny. (if you want to do a hundred knee-bends to "earn" $1, be my guest! 😅) Even if I get pennies in my change from a cashier, I usually leave them on the counter or I toss them in the trash on the way out. I probably lose $10-20 a year, but it's worth it. I've noticed a lot of stores will just round the change up and keep pennies out of the equation.

+James S. Amazing to see how some people flaunt their privilege. SMH
@Futu06
@Futu06 4 года назад
@@Serai3 This isn't privilege. They just pointed out the fact that a penny has no purchase power. In many places, quite literally - many stores don't accept payment in them. That effectively means that if you live in an area where businesses around you don't accept pennies, they are literally worthless pieces of metal. For it to have any purchase power at all, you'd have to collect a very large amount of them and then find a specific store or a way to use them. That's precisely why most pennies are out of circulation already.
@SatoshiMatrix1
@SatoshiMatrix1 4 года назад
In Canada, we got rid of the penny is 2012. And the effect is glorious. Whenever something is 12 cents, you give a dime. If something is 18 cents, you give two dimes. Most stores don't even care if you give them a dime and a nickel. It saves a lot of time and saves giving a lot of fucks.

@tgmforum tgmforum taxes as they are are set a percentages. If someone sells something for a dollar where I live there is 8 cents of tax. in order for that to be a number that is easily divisible by five either the tax code has to be rewritten or companies have to start purposely setting prices so that the math works out. neither of these options is as easy as just rounding.
@q5123
@q5123 4 года назад

I love pennies. Unless it’s dangerous to pick them up, like in a cross walk or the middle of the street, I always do. Once, I rolled $375 in pennies to pay bills. Those coins that no one else wants have helped me stay out of the red on a number of occasions. I also really enjoy collecting the older ones. It always surprises me to find a wheat penny and it makes my whole day that much more joyous. People are crazy for throwing away money. It’s the same for me when they throw bottles or cans out. That’s a whole nickel you’re throwing out there, and sometimes a dime. Like, honestly, I’m not too proud to take two seconds to pick it up. It’s like $38 in gas I’m getting from turning those containers in every two weeks. It makes a difference.

@DiscoChixify
@DiscoChixify 3 года назад
@tgmforum it took several hours, but yes 37,500 pennies. It was quite a lot. I’ve gotten pretty quick at it. You can make stacks of the same height and then double check them to make sure they’re 10c each. Or get a coin sorter. I have one that’s clear plastic where you put a handful of coins in the top and it sorts them. It has marks on the side that give you an approximate amount at that level, but not all coins are the same thickness. They ware down over time. So you have to double check the count but it makes the process faster. Since quarantine people have been staying in the house and using card instead of coins. It’s also a bit dangerous to collect coins and discarded recycling right now with the pandemic. But the coin shortage means people who collect coins are the only ones who have them right now. The scarcity increases their value.

It's baffling to me that the U.S. still has pennies and non-polymer bills. You guys are really good at doing things that aren't in your best interest! I was still working as a cashier at a casino when they got rid of pennies here in Canada. Man, was I stoked about it. No more having to count people's giant Ziploc bags full of pennies they'd bring in (because my bosses were too cheap to buy a coin counter).

Yeah. We dropped the penny in Canada a few years back. Life went on. The transition was pretty painless, really. I keep a 1965 penny on my desk though because it's my mother's year of birth and her name's Penny. But yeah, get rid of 'em, guys. Trust me, it'll be okay.

Did you guys round up or down? That is my fear, our govt will round up and call it a new tax. Plus I have been broke to where I would scrounge for change just so I could buy bread or rice. Prices are already high enough and our economy is greedy enough to figure out how to use the drop in pennies to up prices more. I guess I am just jaded from being in really tough times. I make good money now but 15yrs ago I didn't. A coworker bragged how she never picked up pennies and would vacuum them up when cleaning her car. She scoffed at saving them cause after a year it would only be a few dollars. It isn't like you could go on vacation with what you saved. From someone struggling to survive that was hard to hear. I still save e very penny because I don't want to struggle like that ever again.

Three words: Penny Pressing Machines
@kosmologist
@kosmologist 6 лет назад
Don't forget that when the half-cent was eliminated, the value of the penny was what a QUARTER is now. In other words, eliminating the half-cent back in the day would be functionally equivalent to eliminating all coins less than 25 cents. By comparison eliminating our modern penny would make almost no difference.

Go ahead and loose the nickle while we are at it. Drop a decimal point and make a dime the lowest unit. (yes the quarter would have to be replaced with something that doesn't end in .05). At this point there is no real reason not to make everything round to the nearest 10 cents.

In addition to the halfpenny we've had a twenty-cent coin, fractional notes (a special dollar bill meant to be torn into four "quarters") & a three-cent coin to pay for postage. In 1982 they changed how the penny was produced partway through the year, so there are many similar, but different, pennies from that year to collect (should you be so inclined). Also, dime was originally spelled" disme". ........and that's all I've got to say about *that* .

@@lazyhomebody1356 Fun fact, however superstition is cultural based and is given power by those who believe it. People now believe a heads up penny is lucky and so it is. The origin is rendered irrelevant due to the inevitable passing of time and shift of culture. The world around us is a lie and nothing is real. The Universe is infinite and meaningless. The only point of life is enjoyment. Get as close as you can. Have a enjoyable day.

@@Lanoira13 wow, thats pretty enlightened. It's the same way Trump is going to destroy America with false allegations of voter fraud. To many people, many years from now those allegations will be held as fact within them and they will propagate it as such... rendering this moment in history very relevant in that, this gaslighting behavior needs to be tamped down. Im sorry to put a political spin on your philosophical musings but it was on my mind and a recent topic of conversation with someone else. This person could not comprehend the very idea that you articulated impressively... in being able to project forward and extrapolate an outcome with emphasis on the human condition. You explained it much better than I could. I guess I could have simply mused this all internally... does this mean that I'm attempting to impose my ideology upon you by trying to align myself with you and then distort your views in doing so? I'm asking sincerely and earnestly. I've recently suffered a traumatic event and devastating loss. My mind seems to be changing without my consent lately. I'm questioning my long flaunted intelligence and sanity at increasing intervals. Do I matter? Used to happen once in a blue moon. Then once every few years. Then every few months. Then weeks. Now it seems to be several times a day and involving random people in RU-vid comment forums. Probably not a good sign. Sorry to trouble you.
@Lanoira13
@Lanoira13 3 года назад
@@jimig399 Well I certainly already hate Trump, so no distortions of my beliefs no. It seems more like you're seeking desperately to relate and interact, which is understandable in a time of grief. That combined with the other issues you mentioned struggling with, it sounds like you might be depressed, and would probably benefit most from speaking to a therapist or counselor. I also experienced a loss recently and have been noticing a tendency in myself to reach out, more to acquaintances or people I barely know rather than friends, so I relate on that.
@jimig399
@jimig399 3 года назад
@@Lanoira13 enlightened, intuitive and compassionate...once again I'm impressed. I need to surround myself with more people like you but there seems to be a shortage in my area. Already found a decent therapist. Helps to hold my interest that she's both smart and beautiful but her only council thus far has been to live in the moment and to forget my loss and move forward. Easier said when your not the one who's world has been flipped upside down, ripped apart and your the only person or thing left standing and all the people you loved most are gone from your life forever. I never understood depression. I've had a few friends over the years who were struggling with it. I think at the time I was irritated by them. The same as people seem to be irritated by me and my suffering now. I didn't understand what they were going thru or why they didn't lift themselves up and soldier on. Perhaps this is my just desserts for being so insensitive and apathetic which I can clearly see that I was and very much regret. As for Donald Trump ...I don't care for him myself tho I'm reluctant to bring the hate word into my life at this point. He has certainly set us back and seems intent on going down in flames with as many as he can get to go with him while passing the buck off to the people he's victimized. I think he's borderline personality disorder like my wife. She has a clinical diagnosis and I've had a front row seat familiarizing me with the characteristics and behaviors that are common in borderline personality. He exhibits all of them. Amazing that he has so made it this far and has so many supporters. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets away with all of it. Seems like they have their own support network and they very much take care of their own. I honestly believe that there is a plot being played out that is very similar to "Invasion of the body snatchers". We are being taken over by something and these latest election numbers show that they are almost half way complete in their task. I'm not a conspiracy theorist or a kook. I only know what I've observed and what I have suffered at the hands of these people... or whatever they are. They're not human because they lack humanity when it's appropriate...lack compassion when it's necessary and don't understand the concept of mercy. It's also how I know you are not one of them. Stay strong. Thanks for your compassion. Don't let the hate into your heart or mind. Good luck. 🙋🌞

I am a miniature painter, (as in the miniatures used to play Dungeons & Dragons,) and I glue pennies to the bottom of the miniatures' bases. The pennies weigh them down so if someone bumps the table the minis don't fall or move. The pennies are cheaper than buying washers or weights since they only cost the penny itself. I can weigh down 100 miniatures for a dollar.

Blue Panda Uchiha sure except it does not apply. The worth of something also depends on the scarcity of things. This is the reason why even money over 100 years old in a lot of cases is not worth as much as you would think. Same with other objects. As long as there is a lot of those then its not worth a whole lot. A good example for this is bible. My mother for example almost 10 years ago. While work at the church as a caretaker found old bibles in the attic, the oldest dating back all the way to the 1600's. You would think wow that is old. So the church had an expert come and take a look. Sadly because there are still many copies out there of that bible, it is not worth a whole lot. Despite being close to 400 years old.

When's the last time you found anything worth a single dime? I live near a dollar store and a random surplus store. The cheapest things there are 75c for 50 toothpicks & 50c for a cheap refrigerator magnet. The only I can think of at all worth less than 25c is loose candy, at which point you're better off just selling it 3/25c, than 1/10c.
