I think most people were annoyed that the penny did nothing. Many people collect pennies. It's weird but they do it. I would say penny removal went pretty quickly though.

It was kind of a non-issue really, nothing much to make a fuss about. :)

In Canada, we got rid of the penny in 2012. Now prices are just rounded to the next whole number. It saves time. It saves weight in your wallet. It means charities get more money via those spinning wheels young children love and it means the government saves money by not printing useless coins. It's a win-win for everyone. The fact that the United States STILL hasn't gotten rid of the penny is ludicrous.

That's taking a few seconds out of my life (time) with essentially no benefit of return (purchasing power). The only "gain" you achieve is the physical exercise of retrieving that penny. (if you want to do a hundred knee-bends to "earn" $1, be my guest! 😅) Even if I get pennies in my change from a cashier, I usually leave them on the counter or I toss them in the trash on the way out. I probably lose $10-20 a year, but it's worth it. I've noticed a lot of stores will just round the change up and keep pennies out of the equation.

@@Serai3 This isn't privilege. They just pointed out the fact that a penny has no purchase power. In many places, quite literally - many stores don't accept payment in them. That effectively means that if you live in an area where businesses around you don't accept pennies, they are literally worthless pieces of metal. For it to have any purchase power at all, you'd have to collect a very large amount of them and then find a specific store or a way to use them. That's precisely why most pennies are out of circulation already.

If someone sells something for a dollar where I live there is 8 cents of tax. in order for that to be a number that is easily divisible by five either the tax code has to be rewritten or companies have to start purposely setting prices so that the math works out. neither of these options is as easy as just rounding.

@tgmforum Prices still exists in single cent increments here. Anything paid by debit or credit card is still charged the normal price. It's only when using cash that the price is rounded to the nearest nickel.

I think it probably partly depends on the cost of living in a location, and probably the typical wages.

I agree, I've been saving spare change, mostly pennies, for years now. It might be silly, but I don't see the point in throwing away money. Sure, it'll be work to roll then all when it's time to put it in my account, but I kinda get satisfaction from saving the coins.

@tgmforum it took several hours, but yes 37,500 pennies. It was quite a lot. I’ve gotten pretty quick at it. You can make stacks of the same height and then double check them to make sure they’re 10c each. Or get a coin sorter. I have one that’s clear plastic where you put a handful of coins in the top and it sorts them. It has marks on the side that give you an approximate amount at that level, but not all coins are the same thickness. They ware down over time. So you have to double check the count but it makes the process faster. Since quarantine people have been staying in the house and using card instead of coins. It’s also a bit dangerous to collect coins and discarded recycling right now with the pandemic. But the coin shortage means people who collect coins are the only ones who have them right now. The scarcity increases their value.

Yeah, we here in the United States of America pretty much just sit around sucking deep fried garbage out of a putrified corpses punctured taint. Fortunately the country is going to collapse within 30 months from now, so you won't have to worry about us for long. I look forward to dying in the riots.

But what is the lowest possible denomination in you currency system? Currently, it is a hundredth of a dollar, that is, a fraction, and theoretically a dollar could be divided in any number of fractions, or no fraction at all. Anyway, in my country, Chile, we don't have a fractional currency, but we still got rid of the $1 and $5 coins and nothing happened.

We do not miss the copper being in circulation. Everyone kept some pennies, because they were an important currency in our history. It didn't make sense, to keep making cents.

No. I pick up and save all the change I can. I then wrap it and exchange it for bills at my local bank. It helps a lot.

No. I roll probably $25-$30 in pennies every year. Granted, I don't know if I'd get down on my hands and knees and pick up $1.50 worth but it's still currency. I've never understood the argument, "well it costs more to make them then they're worth". Ok, fair enough. But a 20 dollar bill doesn't cost $20 to make either. With the exception of the penny I'm pretty sure every other denomination costs less to produce than it's actual monetary worth.

To many people, many years from now those allegations will be held as fact within them and they will propagate it as such... rendering this moment in history very relevant in that, this gaslighting behavior needs to be tamped down. @@jimig399 Well I certainly already hate Trump, so no distortions of my beliefs no. It seems more like you're seeking desperately to relate and interact, which is understandable in a time of grief. That combined with the other issues you mentioned struggling with, it sounds like you might be depressed, and would probably benefit most from speaking to a therapist or counselor. I also experienced a loss recently and have been noticing a tendency in myself to reach out, more to acquaintances or people I barely know rather than friends, so I relate on that.

Already found a decent therapist. Helps to hold my interest that she's both smart and beautiful but her only council thus far has been to live in the moment and to forget my loss and move forward. Easier said when your not the one who's world has been flipped upside down, ripped apart and your the only person or thing left standing and all the people you loved most are gone from your life forever. I never understood depression. I've had a few friends over the years who were struggling with it. I think at the time I was irritated by them. The same as people seem to be irritated by me and my suffering now. I didn't understand what they were going thru or why they didn't lift themselves up and soldier on. Perhaps this is my just desserts for being so insensitive and apathetic which I can clearly see that I was and very much regret. As for Donald Trump ...I don't care for him myself tho I'm reluctant to bring the hate word into my life at this point. He has certainly set us back and seems intent on going down in flames with as many as he can get to go with him while passing the buck off to the people he's victimized. I think he's borderline personality disorder like my wife. She has a clinical diagnosis and I've had a front row seat familiarizing me with the characteristics and behaviors that are common in borderline personality. He exhibits all of them. Amazing that he has so made it this far and has so many supporters. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets away with all of it. Seems like they have their own support network and they very much take care of their own. I honestly believe that there is a plot being played out that is very similar to "Invasion of the body snatchers". We are being taken over by something and these latest election numbers show that they are almost half way complete in their task. I'm not a conspiracy theorist or a kook. I only know what I've observed and what I have suffered at the hands of these people... or whatever they are. They're not human because they lack humanity when it's appropriate...lack compassion when it's necessary and don't understand the concept of mercy. It's also how I know you are not one of them. This is the reason why even money over 100 years old in a lot of cases is not worth as much as you would think. Same with other objects. As long as there is a lot of those then its not worth a whole lot. A good example for this is bible. My mother for example almost 10 years ago. While work at the church as a caretaker found old bibles in the attic, the oldest dating back all the way to the 1600's. You would think wow that is old. So the church had an expert come and take a look. Sadly because there are still many copies out there of that bible, it is not worth a whole lot. Despite being close to 400 years old.

When's the last time you found anything worth a single dime? I live near a dollar store and a random surplus store. The cheapest things there are 75c for 50 toothpicks & 50c for a cheap refrigerator magnet. The only I can think of at all worth less than 25c is loose candy, at which point you're better off just selling it 3/25c, than 1/10c.

At my local dollar store, all the non-food items are $1.10 because of sales tax. So there's that.
