Up and down on repeat all day always seems to be much more tiring than just one or two honest climbs and descents. You can actually do far less altitude but still end up really weary. I think it has a lot to do with finding a physical rhythm, but it seems to me to be psychological too. Acceptance of the climbs in particular has to be repeatedly mustered (or not mustered...).
