The seventeenth day of my through hike of the Pennine Way, from Greenhead. As I set out that morning, little did I know that this was going to be the last day on trail, having to cut the day short at Once Brewed. Ultimately a very frustrating end to the Pennine Way with only 50 miles or so to go and 4 days left. Utterly devastating to have to give up so close to the finish. The video explains all. I'll be back....

The Pennine Way with it’s breathtaking scenery is still one of the most challenging long-distance walks for anybody to take on, you’ve done brilliantly and thank’s for sharing.

Thanks for watching. The trail passes some of the most incredible sights, and the first two days from Edale to Standedge are some of the hardest I've ever hiked - especially in that heat. The trail's not going anywhere, and I'll certainly be back to finish it!

Ahh that’s a shame you never got to complete the trail , all the more reason to get back and join up the missing miles, your new addition are lovely and will keep you busy , hopefully you tooth isn’t giving you any problems now , take care ,🥾🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thanks. It's taken a while to get the root canal done, but it's all sorted now, thankfully. Had I an extra two or three days, I might well have managed to sort it on trail, but alas I was just too tight on time. The two boys are a couple of hooligans - they've also made friends with next doors cat, so it's triple trouble!

We’re so sorry you had to cut your walk short due to tooth ache of all things! Your two babies Trip & Chase are gorgeous. Of course you’ll never forget Gilbert (or Sully) but your heart is big enough and has enough love for these babies too. God bless you. ❤️🐾

Thank you for your kind comment. As I type this, it's two weeks to the day until I restart the Pennine Way from Twice Brewed. The two boys are curled up asleep on my bed, after an energetic day! They are both very different and very sweet (Chase loves to bring me his favourite grumpy cat toy) and very close to each other. They can never replace Gilbert, but they were never intended to. They are full of energy and character. Hopefully they will appear in a couple of planned videos over the year! Thanks once again for your kind thoughts

PS We have one of those little black cats as well. She wandered into the house about 14 years ago and never left !! Our huge Abyssinian male bloke was hugely unimpressed and remained so until the day he departed !!!

These two are real chaos makers. They're bonded brothers, which help, but boy, they are live wires!

So sorry about your tooth! The trail will be there next year, and I look forward to watching your videos. Chase and Trip will bring you much joy. Best wishes.

They are a couple of little characters - although I now can't have anything on a surface that isn't nailed down! Thanks for following me on the trail. It's been enjoyable making these videos, really frustrating to get so close and have to end it due to toothache, but these things happen. Looking at May to finish it off, and hopefully I can get a few other things up on the channel in the meantime.

What a bugger !!! I've followed your trip from Day One and you have done a great job in editing and presentation. I'm 80 now but even at "my best" seriously doubt I could have done this. I have a friend who tried it many years ago and Bill got medivaced out at about the halfway point !!

Thanks for the kind comments. Sadly my natural stubbornness didn't help here. Sorry to hear about your friend. I guess that in the last few years, things have become a lot easier due to the internet and GPS. It must have been a far different challenge back in the day. I'll be back in mid-May to finish things off over the Cheviots, so look out for the final vids. Won't be the same as completing it in one go, but it'll have to do!

Ahh so sorry toothache meant you had to leave the trail you but it can be the worst pain ever. I've only ever had it once and certainly dont want to repeat it. Huge congratulations for getting as far as you did and I have no doubt you will finish it. I believe everything happens for a reason and we dont always know why, those 2 beautiful kittens prove my point - you were meant to go and get them. I've really enjoyed following you on this trail thank you

I'll certainly be finishing it. Having got that far, I can't leave it unfinished - I'm still really gutted about not getting to the end. Thank you for following my journey - hopefully I can add to it around May time and complete it!

First, congratulations on your new cats! I wish you every joy of them, and it looks very much like that is already happening. Second, congratulations on your walk. Even if you had to leave the trail a bit short of the finish it is still a hell of an achievement. And the great god of British hillwalking himself, Alfred Wainwright, said that the Pennine Way should really begin at Dovedale and end at Hadrian's Wall. Third,, thank you for this terrific series of videos -- as I said before, easily they are easily the best and most complete I have seen for the Pennine Way, and many another walk. I look forward to following your footsteps some day soon. And, by the way, when I walk it, I actually want to trek from Dovedale to the Wall. Looking forward to seeing you walking the home stretch when you get the chance!

They're certainly keeping me busy! Thank you for your kind comments too, the vlog was started mainly as a personal journey record. I never thought for a moment I'd get the number of positive comments that I have! I think the biggest frustration is getting so far. Even a sprained ankle or other injury could have been easier to take. With everything going so well, and no problems with fitness (the aches and pains I get used to), it was such a hard decision to make. I'm looking at May now to finish off, and I might just extend it from Kirk Yetholm to Melrose to take in part of the St Cuthberts way as well.

Loving these vids, thank you for sharing. Sorry you had to stop short on this one. I well remember that feeling of frustration when I had to do much the same on the coast to coast a few years back. Cumbria way vids were great! About to follow your Rob Roy adventures ! Subbed

Thanks for watching! I'll be going back in May to finish the PW off starting at the Sill, so watch out from that. Hoping to do the Coast to Coast myself this year, but West to East. Hopefully in the mean time, I can get a bit of plodding done on my home patch. (This bug that's been going around lately has really taken its toll, the past few months :( )

Thoroughly enjoyed your videos especially as you showed more of the Pennine Way than yourself! So sorry you had to come off the trail especially so close to the end. I expect we will see you completing it before too long - black cats permitting! I am at the moment planning my visit to the Pennine Way later in the year. I hope I get weather as good as you did and I hope I can produce videos up to the standard you set. Well done on a fantastic achievement.

Thanks for watching. I'm planning on getting back to the Sill in May now to finish it off. So very frustrating to get so close and have to come off trail - it wont be the same arriving in Kirk Yetholm, but it's unfinished business. In the meantime, I'll hopefully be covering some shorter walks and the John Muir Way when time (and cats) permit. Sadly, the dreaded lurgy has had me in its grip since November, and I'm just beginning to see the end of it! Here's to happy hiking in 2024!

It's the frustration of it more than anything. Getting so close to the end and having to come off trail for it is annoying. Not been able to do much recently because of the dreaded lurgy as well. Hopefully I can get out soon - it's enough to send anyone stir crazy!

Really gutted for you, it's been very enjoyable watching your videos they brought back a lot of memories from my Pennine Way walk in 2021. I'am glad you got the cats (I'am a cat person myself)we've had a dozen cats over the years and even when we lost one a couple of years back I said To my wife i couldn't face going through all the trauma and anguish again and didn't want another cat but we ended up taking in two strays and I wouldn't be without them now, so I can sympathise with you. ps I hope you finish the trail.
@blackcathiking7831

I'd intended to wait a lot longer to get another cat, but things happened so quickly. Coming home from work each day to an empty house was so difficult, which is why I went to the open day. The two of them are a couple of little characters, and it tempers the loss a little. The pain gets easier with time, but never truly leaves you and hits at the strangest moments. I think May next year is likely to finish it off, and I might just make it longer by walking through to Melrose on the St Cuthberts Way. Frustrating more than anything having really done the bulk of it!
