The only additive to be careful of in TGDI vehicles due to it exacerbating Low speed pre ignition is calcium. Most of those cars use 5w-30 though, which uses a different additive package. In fact, the calcium ratio is opposite in 5w-30 for Pens Plat, and Ultra, and platinum in 5w30 has almost 200 Boron. In 5w-30, all but the "High performance" oils like Amsoil, Pen Ultra, Red line have lower calcium levels, and higher mag levels. They also have higher tbns, but Castrol Extended has a very high TBN and still very low calcium additive. The other thing TGDI engines are famous for: fuel dilution. As far as that goes, Pennsoil and Quaker State have the highest Flash points by a significant margin, likely owing to their different base oil. They could likely survive a little more fuel contamination before that became a flaming death coffin issue. That being said, your main bearings would weld to the races due to the extremely low film strength, far before you catch on fire with all of the oils.
Every time I hear about LSPI I can’t help but laugh. Low speed pre ignition is an engine / tuning issue. Oil has nothing to do with it. It’s a joke. There’s no oil in the combustion chamber. If your engine is turbo and tuned poorly from the factory and has detonation issues, how is it the oil’s problem to SOLVE?!?!?! 🤨🤦🏻♂️😆🤣

However, IF there is oil in the combustion chamber, I'm sure some oils are more likely to exacerbate the issue than others. That being said, if there is oil in the the combustion chamber, it is t the oils fault, like you said.
Regarding FILM strength is their really much difference in their ultra 0w-20 vs ultra 5w-20 oil ????? was thinking that Running their ultra 5w-20 would be a better choice in the hotter months maybe even the 5w-30 but TOYOTA does list 0w-20 as they recommended oil.
Ok I think , so I use Quaker state now in both my cars a Toyota and a Kia is that ok? I wont use the natural gas pennzoil I used it once in both cars and wether it was a coincidence or not the Corolla I found a leak at the timing chain tensioner and had to get that repaired and the Kia I found a leak by the timing chain cover sound coincidence but now I have Quaker state in both, I hope Quaker state is good ? Thoughts?
Been using Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage W K&N High Performance filters and have had good results, have had people recommend against me putting it in my Honda but it’s gotten me this far, good video!

@@happyman9612 not sure what research you’ve done, but high mileage oils do not contain seal “softeners”. They contain seal conditioners. Check around on official websites.
I purchased in new 2021 in 2021 and began using the ultra after 1,000 miles and 3 months old. Prior to this vehicle I traded in my 2018 Jeep Rubicon Recon edition. I followed the same guidlines and noticed a strong oil vapor smell with the Pennzoil Platinum. A friend of mine that worked at another Jeep dealership said he had the same problem in his Jeep Rubicon and switched over to Amsoil Signature Series and never had a problem. He also stated he sent the sample to Blackstone Lab and the results showed a big improvement. I decided to try the Amsoil and also found starting and MPG improved. Engine also was much more quiet! I also use the amsoil in my new 2023 Harley Tri Glide. I still use the Pennzoil Platinum in my wifes Grand Cherokee and no smell or odor. Both our vehicles have the 3.6 liter engine.
the question is for the average vehicle is the extra cost of Amsoil worth it if you’re doing regular oil changes. for me, no but if you have the extra dough, go 4 it.
Great video! It's awesome to see what it looks like on paper. I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and it's an excellent oil! It performs great! The Platinum is also a very solid choice if the Ultra Platinum isn't available locally, but there's always Amazon.

Any oil on the market is fine as long as you change it at a correct interval based on your driving conditions. Supertech is a good oil and priced cheap. The Ultra Fram is the only oil filter you should be buying from Fram, their cheaper offerings are garbage, so good call on that one I guess. But anyways I've been using Pennzoil UP for 2 years now along with a WIX XP filter for both my cars. I change my oil between 3-5k miles. The $6 to $8 I'd be saving from going with Supertech and fram isn't worth it for me, I personally discourage anyone from buying a fram filter, supertech is okay.

That boron and moly B are probably what makes ULTRA a bit better but I'm unsure. One thing I do know is that Pennzoil backs up there engine warranty better for longer miles with the ULTRA vs regular platinum.

Project Farm tested Pennzoil 5W-20 Platinum along with 3 other Pennzoil products (sample date 4/22/2023) and had a sample analyzed by Blackstone Laboratories: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xtSwaF2evTU.html He provides a link to the analysis of four different Pennzoil products in the description of the video. The analysis showed calcium for the 5W-20 Platinum at 878 ppm, not 2139 as shown in the test sample for this video, also the PF sample had Magnesium at 386, Molybdenum at 47 , Boron at 5, Phosphorous at 550 and Zinc at 617. It appears to me that the formula for this oil has changed, mostly in regards to the Calcium and that may be for the potential LSPI issues associated with Calcium (real or not).
One guy on the web did a really cold weather oil flow test featuring Pennzoil synthetic 0w30. It featured Petro-Canada, Marvel Mystery Oil, Quaker State and regular Valvoline. Its really worth watching his video to see and compare how Pennzoil synthetic oils are performing in real life cold weather. Suprinsingly, Pennzoil was probably the worst of the synthetic oils being tested when it comes to flowing. Your video is very informative sir, i really appreciate the time and effort you took to show it. I am still using Pennzoil for my vehicles except winter driving. (Canada)
To be more precise; its the Pennzoil Euro Platinum LX that doesnt flow very well in extreme cold according to Rodger Martins video. The other Pennzoil Platinum are performing ok in extreme cold. That Euro Platinum is sold here in Canada.
One thing we do here in the midwest and northern U.S. states which has caught on to the point that some people call it a midwest oil change is that we run the same oil year round (popular choices here are pennz platinum, shell rotella gas truck, Supertech full synthetic) but once the harsh winter temperatures start, we substitute one quart of the above mentioned oils for 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and boy does that make a difference when it comes to start up but also a noticeable difference in countering the normal drop in MPG's that usually happens in the winter. Then after the temps start to climb again around the beginning of spring we dump that oil and go back to any of the above oils full strength. Everyone of my vehicles started running better year round after I switched to the midwest oil change including my chevy truck that for years had the well known tick has never had that tick again despite putting another 80,000 miles on her after switching to the midwest oil change method.

I have had an issue that Walmart was always giving excuses about taking used oil back, during the pandemic. So I have a pretty good Jiffy Lube near my house. Of my gasoline engine vehicles, I found the Penzoil Ultra Platinum to run slightly smoother over the Platinum. Since the Jiffy Lube sells the Ultra Platinum in 0w40 and Platinum in 0w20. I prefer the extra viscosity improvers of the Ultra Platinum. I live in the Mojave desert area of Northern Los Angeles County. And drive all over the Western USA. My '20 Dodge Durango GT has 117k miles. My '23 Jeep JLU Sport S Altitude is only 4 months old, and less than 2.5k miles. Every new vehicle that I have in the past 20 years gets an oil change at 700 miles. Then the factory interval thereafter. My '03 Ford Explorer V6 has 227k miles. I ran Mobil 1 since the first oil change. It now gets Penzoil Platinum, and still runs as good as when I bought it new. Running any synthetic automotive oil is good for longevity. Our '18 Ram 2500 4wd with the 6.7L Cummins, 5w40 Rotella T6. The dealer made a mistake of putting in 15w40 Rotella T6 in the oil change I had done when I had some warranty work done. A month later I put in the 5w40 Rotella T6. The difference was amazing! The engine ran much smoother and quieter. Got 3 mpg better too! We get 26mpg without our 4wheel popup camper and 22mpg with it. Both numbers are at 65mph.
Ultra Platinum also has a checkmark beside extreme performance where the Platinum doesn’t. Both start with a narural gas base as well. I’ll have to wait to try the Ultra Platinum when it’s on sale at Canadian Tire or Walmart. I’ve tried some synthetic oils in my 1970 Z28 and ended up going back to conventional oil so I can do 2 oil changes between April and Nov b/c of the cost. I did’t switch back due to leaks as some people think happens. Why some leak with synthetic oils is b/c your gasket set is old and not the new type of material that can stand synthetic oils.
Idk about the numbers, all I know is I use it on my 2016 Corolla since new and with 65k miles on it now the engine idles and revs as smoothly as it did when I drove it off the lot
I work for Ford and I’ve noticed a lot of carbon build up on cars running the motorcraft syn blend on the ecoboost engines. I’m running 5w30 penzoil full synthetic platinum and I’m already at 100k on my 2.0 ecoboost with zero issues. I think the full synthetic helps a lot on these engines. I hope to check the valves using a boroscope soon.
Just put it in my girlfriends Jeep JKU, just catching up on maintenance because we just got it. Just did rear, front, transfer, transmission, coolant flush, about to do a tune up, and just completed this Ultra Plat. oil change. Told her that she should see some MPGs back.
Put Mobil1 5W-30 full synthetic in my 21 2.0t. Cold starts are smoother and less valve train noise. Emailed jeep cares prior to the fill to cover my ass in regards to warranty. API SP GF-6A Certifications, good to go. Factory fill was dirtier than I expected 650ish miles, took delivery in July.
I paid 34 bucks at Napa Walmart even had it for 30 but didn’t have my type the small quarts 7 amd change on special just buy at special worth the money any quality Oil will be 20 or more anyways
“2nd best oil after Amsoil” - I agree. I used Penn Platinum for a while before finally switching to Amsoil. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that didn’t want to spend the premium for Amsoil.

Well Amsoil has one again side by side test against ultra Platinum. Yes it cost more but it also doesn't need to be changed for 25,000 MI so if you do the math it's actually cheaper than paying for the ultra.

As for me, I would never go 25,000 miles between oil changes no matter the oil so it’s not much of a selling point and not affecting the price. I change my oil every 6 months no matter the mileage. For me, it would take over two years to reach 25,000 miles and I would never wait that long. My cars aren’t exactly high performance (Murano and forester), don’t tow, only got Texas summers. Never tried amsoil but based on the current price I see on Amazon, $25 vs $125 per oil change is hard to justify. Of course if you are a dealer I’m happy to try it if you want to make me a deal 😃!
@@jerryyoung6494 there is some good material out there regarding the integrity and longevity of the Amsoil products. I wish I were a dealer but sadly am just a customer. I'm slowly moving all my fluids over to Amsoil but yes, the initial cost is a big hump to get over but the life of your engine/transmission can be extended using their products.
I tried Castrol edge and my motor made noises I’ve never heard before and I dumped the oil within 50 miles, and will never go back. The cold start flow is terrible with Castrol

Folks, make sure the Pennzoil or any brand oil that you're buying is labeled ILSAC GF-6A (or B for hybrid cars) the latest oil certification as of March 2020. Some retailers are trying to sell off old GF-5 inventory without customers knowing.

Apparently the ultra can be found off the self in Canada with ease. Not in the USA it's mostly order online like Amazon or Walmart and hope you don't get a 4 year old jug. The platinum is no problem anywhere it's the ultra hard to find. If you do find it like at NAPA car parts they want 55 dollars us for it . So I'm going to use the regular platinum at $23. Hopefully its better than the Toyota/mobile 1 full synthetic. After the dealer changes the oil my print out shows that they pay $1.50 per quart it reads 4.4Q @1.50 total 7.50 so i figure if there paying mobile 1.50 per quart it has to be crap then filter crush washer service charge and total $59. It's always 2.5 hour wait for an oil change and that there best time no exceptions.
2.5 hr wait for $70? Dealer can suck it!. Oil change places can suck it too. But I guess they all have to upcharge a little to keep the lights on and pay the employees. Throw in a Fujimoto valve in place of your oil drain bolt and a high quality synthetic 20k rated filter. Makes it real easy without having to jack up your vehicle until you have to change the filter that is. Just attach the hose, open the valve and drain. Change every 5k regardless unless UOA come back saying you can go more. I did like the Castrol Edge Extended but it looks like vegetable oil on the thin side of 5W 30 for my application. 2GR-FE V6 Toyota Lexus motor. I have either issues with the cam phaser VVTI locking pin on startup/oil circulation, and or piston slap and valve tick below 30 degrees for about 20 seconds in cold weather. Starts out short on fresh oil and as I get further into the OCI get louder and longer. I've tried all additives and combos. Rislone, Lucus, Prolong, STP ZDDP additive, MMO, different W weights and viscosity. Combos 0W 30 0W40 5W40. HM. Etc. Quietest I recall hearing her run in winter was with MMO and ZDDP additive. Quaker State FS QSFSHM, Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum are really good oils. Used the QSFS and QSFSHM for spring through fall. Oil had great clarity still almost same color as when put in. Both have good amount of molybdenum in it.

Can you specify the API ILSAC GF certification on the back of each bottle? The Platinum appears to be the older GF-5 certification based on the high Calcium and almost none Magnesium levels compared to the Ultra Platinum, which appears to have the more balanced levels characteristic of the newest GF-6A. Thus, this would not be an equal comparison.

@@deadly134 dumped factory fill in 21 JL 2.0T, 650 miles, extremely dirty. Mobil1 full synthetic made cold starts smoother and quieted down valve train.

To shed a little light, the reason why Calcium is higher in the Platinum than the Ultra because 1. Calcium is a detergent, not an anti-wear additive and 2. even if it is good, it has been found that too much Calcium promotes Low-Speed Pre-Ignition, so Calcium is brought back down to optimal levels in the Ultra. Tbh...I would think it would be easier to just add the same for both types of oil but we can assume it's done purposefully to delineate the two oil categories so Pennzoil can give a reason for different prices and marketing one as better.

I don't even care about the difference. I used the best version of Mobile 1 Synthetic... My driving is extremely repetitive, at night, flat roads, exact same speed every day. usually no stops all the way to my work. I averaged a consistant 6.8L/100km with Mobile 1. After switching to Super Platinum.. my car went between 6.1 - 6.2L/ 100km. That's enough for to get around another 50km/week extra out of the same gas. I buy this oil on sale... I save enough that it easily pays for this oil entirely and then some.
Just about to switch to 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum from Motorcraft semi syn that the previous owner used in a '19 F150 3.5. As this truck has about 43K miles on it, don't see a huge benefit by using the Ultra even though both are about the same price at Walmart. This first change will have minimum miles 2-3000 before another change. As for Amsoil - have never found an easily located distributor nearby

The presence of sodium in the PUP oil is not a contaminant, it is deliberately added for a purpose. Sodium is most commonly used as a corrosion inhibitor additive in engine oil. It can also act as a detergent, similar to sand grains, to scrub surfaces and prevent carbon deposits from caking up.
6-8000k miles is more than safe OCI in modern cars when a good synthetic is used. The 3000 mile oil change intervals are a thing of the past, when oils and metallurgy weren't as good as they are today. Coolants are way better these days too

I used Valvoline 5w30 in Wifes CTS change oil soon light always came on a little before 7500 miles decided to try Castrol Ultra Clean next time change oil soon light came on I had 2000 more miles on odometer and it was reset after last oil change I guess Castrol does a better job than Valvoline
maybe something to note, platinum has the dexos blend & may only be relevant with GM vehicles. If dealerships really wanted to get petty with warranty shenanigans
I have 4 serious contenders for you that may exceed Pennzoil Ultra and Amsoil. How about ENEOS Synthetic Oil, Torco SR-5 Synthetic Oil, K&N Synthetic Oil, and Neo Synthetic Oil.
In order for those oils to be "serious contenders", they must be READILY AVAILABLE, which they ARE NOT. The ONLY "serious contenders" for today are the oils marked "API Service SP". Yes you can use both. I think you have the V6 2GRFE motor as well yes?...I do something similar with my Lexus 09 RX 350 with Pennzoil Platinum HM and Platinum or Quaker State Full Synthetic and HM. Even though no oil loss or burn off between OCI. Every other change. I take HM oil and mix 25% to 50% to my 6 quarts to condition the seal but not run the risk of swelling them too much. So every other change.

Used both Amsoil and Pennzoil Ultra extensively in Alaska, towing a heavy trailer and long idle times in winter. All my boxes get Amsoil. But….Pennzoil Ultra has a more robust add pack with Moly, Boron, Antimony and Titanium. The GTL base oil is right there with PAO’s and the motor is quieter with Ultra. My iron is 4 PPM for 5K. I can change oil twice with Ultra to Amsoil once for price. I see the supposed analysis of 40+ PPM on some Amsoil sites. If you want to run your motors with metal particles in it…be my guest. SOPUS has a winner in ULTRA. Again both are good…but change your oil!

The Ultra have a bit more of additives (like boron), will be beneficial for any Direct Injection fuel system (for the deposits) and any engines with DOHC and cam phasers with multiple timing adjustments.

YES! my TOY trucks oil cap also says 0W-20 BUT!!!! the PENNZ Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20 oil JUG says ( And I Quote ). " SAME PROTECTION AS SAE 5W-20 " So then whats the point in spending the extra $5.00 ????????
watch Project Farms video on the comparison test he does. 0w20 was chosen because Toyota wanted to keep the oil film protection as low as possible..so as it will provide the "best possible for the life of the engine". i read some place they could get slightly better mpg with 0w20 (not penzoil specifically but in general) the thing to note is Toyota considers the life of your engine to be about 100k miles. not long after that it's common to have to do the timing tensioners, water pump etc which is about 1/2 the job of a quick engine rebuild.. or at the very least u got the less common maintenance done that everyone wishes they did way sooner ..
Make sure you stick with what the cap says. These engineers know what they are doing when they design engines . Do not deviate from their instructions..

I did change the Timing belt at 95,000 but that TRUCK was bullet proof with the exception of the RUST issue with its FRAME..... I ran 5w-30 Every 3000 miles .......I would have bought another one had they continued with that Motor....... That truck was the same size as the current Tacoma v6 which I now own but dis like due to all the SAFETY BS they've stuck on it..... Its auto High Beam switch locks me out when I attempt to go to high beam but it senses a STREET LIGHT and blocks my choice......... When I get in an accident I WILL be suing TOYOTA over that one........ ...... ALL of this should be set up so the OWNER get to select what he wants to use.....DEFAULT should be OFF not ON......
Where in a world do you find those prices? 5qt jug in Walmart is around 22-24 bucks. Ultra and Platinum at the same price range. Unless i live in different country.
@@danc319 1. I get a online offer from Canadian Tire "get $10 Canadian tire money on purchase of 50 or more". I have their trianglereward card. 2 Canadian tire also put them on 45% sale now and then but biggest sale 60% off comes around November or so in winter. I buy 2 5l jugs for whole year around that time. 3. Pennzoil now and then offer $10 rebates on one 5l jugs but usually its available in winter. They will send you cheque once you complete the process on their website. Hence i wait for 5L Pennzoil platinum to drop to $23 then avail CT money and Pennzoil offer. Which drops the price to like $8 for 5L jug.
I used to own a GM too! Until someone crashed into it. 330000 miles using Eneos dexos 1 oil. Also used Pennzoil Platnum as well when the Napa store is closed. Both good oils
Penn Ultra Platinum absolutely meets Dexos1 gen2 they just don't pay for the certs . we use only PUP in our fleet of newer & expensive F150 Ecoboost trucks! Owner sold on the oil tests.
@@davidklimmek3192 Same with Eneos Dexos 1 by JX Nippon Oil. Very good results. In my area only Napa has it. You should try it sometime if you had the chance. Suitable for most imported and domestic vehicles.
Forget the "DEXOS" bulls**t -- it's NOT a specification OR an ingredient. It's a marketing tool in the form of a LICENSE that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the quality or performance of the oil. Period.
Go to Walmart for best prices. Any motor oil with the API seal of approval is good oil even Walmart Super Tech is fine. Don’t go crazy with all the hype with fancy colors and logos. Turn the bottles on there backs and see the same numbers and letters. SN plus I and all the others. Best oil is clean.

Yes they can. Project Farm did a mix of 10 oils (all kinds of grade, kinds and brand) and it still was okay on an old engine. And since the mix would only be between Pennz Ultra Plat and Plat, it will surely protect and perform very well.
