I heard someone describe Matt’s voice as chocolate velvet and it has stuck with me. I love this so much. It was fantastically perfect!

Maybe I'm showing my age on this one but yes, it was darker like the Nightmare Before Christmas "Making Christmas" they did, but to me as soon as it started with the first shot of Mitch, I immediately thought of Barnabas Collins from the old 60's show Dark Shadows. Then as the video went on that's all I could see was Dark Shadows. LOL. I know a lot of people these days would think of the Johnny Depp version from the movie that came out in 2012 I think it was, but I see the original Barnabas as soon as I saw Mitch in that opening shot.

A lot said Nightmare before Christmas vibes...they did a steam punk vibe, first time Matt and Kevin wore eye makeup... All items were just randomly put on table by set design.... Great setting...

I'm glad you got to react to the actual video, because this is one of my favorite ones (see what I did there?). They got to bring out their musical theater kids background in this one. The vibe of the video was supposed to be Mad Hatter's Tea Party meets Steam Punk (meets The Sound of Music). All of the "favorite things" were just props that the set designers placed around the table (with other items being tossed down from production assistants in the rafters of the studio). The director just had each member grab something that was close to them and react to it on camera...none of it was planned out in advance, so there was no symbolism intended...thus Matt's teddy bear, Kevin's giant keychain (and TV remote in an earlier shot), Mitch grasping that little trophy with all his might, Scott's skull (??!!) and Kirstie joyfully playing with the toy airplane (which actually gives me life every time I see it)! In an interview, Kirstie was talking about the items being tossed down from the rafters, and she was certain that the PAs were actually TRYING to nail each member of the group with every toss!

Scott with the skull... how very Shakespearean! "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio!" Lol

Great reaction. You made a much better job of explaining the symbolism than I did. All I saw were things flying all over the place. This is an awesome video and it showcases so much of what makes PTX great. Kirstie killed it and all the vocal cameos were great. Kevin is brilliant, as always, but I couldn’t help thinking as I listened through the whole performance: Matt was such a great choice for PTX!

When you think about it, "the Sound of Music" was set in Austria during or just right before world war II so it was a song that is sung when things seems bad so I totally get the "dark" flavor of the video. I thought it was really well done :) as usual, wonderful reaction!

I love that mv too, great idea which suited very good to such a song arrangement. A bit of a spooky atmosphere with a thrill. And this piece of courtly dance at the end. From Christmas songs I recommend a beautiful performance of "Mary did you know" and "That`s Christmas to me" - original, and of non-Christmas songs "Evolution of Michael Jackson", "Water" Popspring 2016 - original, "Attention".

Speaking of the nightmare before Christmas vibe have you done their cover of Making Christmas from that movie? I think you'll like it if you'll like the vibe of this one. Festive and spooky at the same time. Plus that arrangement is even more complex. Given that the original song in the movie doesn't have much singing. Just mostly character speaking voices set to music. So they really had to create their own melodies to sing.
@heidifruchtl354
@heidifruchtl354 3 года назад
Kevin said that normally he has some idea of what/how he's going to do the beat. With the making Christmas song, he had no idea. They had to listen to that song a lot to figure out their arrangement.

This was so weird - reminds me of Making Christmas, with the dark make-up and odd movements. There is a video where they talk about making this, and there were guys up on crane baskets dropping things on them, that would sometimes hit them while they were singing. If they had to stop, they guys in the booms had to come down and pick up all the stuff and start all over. Not your Sound of Music version!

Don't try to put to much symbolism in the article. They said in their after party that they just grabbed what was near them. Did you notice the articles being thrown down throughout the song? Definitely a fun video.
