Not sure if you noticed, but with Matt singing lead, Scott is doing the bass part that Matt usually does, creating a bass rhythm effect that interacts with Kevin's percussion, then occasionally singing harmonies with Kirstie and Mitch. I don't know what it is, but watching PTX sing just makes me happy. Maybe because they look so happy to be singing. They really helped me get through the pandemic.
This was the song that cemented Matt's place as a Pentatonix member. I think a lot of people were still reeling from Avi's departure at this point, and openly missing him as the bass, worrying that Matt wouldn't have the chops to 'replace' him in the long run. This song proved that both he and Pentatonix had played it smart; Matt wasn''t 'Avi 2.0,' and nor was he trying to be - he has his own unique style and charm, and he showcases it brilliantly in this number. Don't get me wrong, I loved Avi's time in the group, but he could not have brought what Matt brought to this number - it would have been just as good technically, but it would have to have been different, to make it work with Avi's personality. I don't think you can pick which bass makes Pentatonix 'better;' they're equally amazing, but just different.
Matt did a fantastic job with the lead. Love the theatrics with the facial expressions. Kevin holding down the beats. Scott holding the base line. Then Mitch and Kirsty rounding it out.
I just realized that I gave my age away but it does not matter. Once I hear Elvis, I can "twigle" to whatever he sings,,,,,,I love to hear new singers.
PTX sounds like a jazz big band with “horn” section accompanying the soloist Matt. When they do that run in harmony up to a high trumpet “scream” by Kirstie! Oh, and the syncopation in the background! It’s such fire!
Nice seeing someone enjoying their full effort. It's not just vocals with these flawless people. Their visuals and arrangements are incredible. It's too bad they get blocked so often because watching new people react to their videos is just amazing to see . Thanks again and stay safe.
You can’t go wrong with any song you pick. With over 100 Christmas songs to choose from, good luck picking just 25! Ha, ha, ha! PTX gives each one their own special spin and no matter how tired of it you were they resurrect it. Can’t wait for your next reaction!
I am so glad you have decided to tackle the pentatonix christmas catalog. gives me something to look forward to each day. we pentaholics can recognize a reactor who is close to or at the same level of creativity in reacting as pentatonix is in their craft of being the best in their field., and in my opinion you are in a that very limited group of reactors that fit that bill. charisma comes to mind. so thank you for doing this.
Great reaction!! In case no one has suggested it, you must see Pentatonix's version of "Oh Come All Ye Faithful". Totally unique arrangement, and now my most favorite Christmas song of all time.
Just to let you know, most pentaholics can, and do, listen to PTX Christmas music all year long. Hopefully you can see the 12 days of Christmas. I've lost count of the reactors who have all sworn that they hate it, only to get blown away by the PTX version. Hold on to your hat, it's not Christmas without PTX.
I have been watching you and must say that I love your reactions. You are erudite, kind and soulful. Pentatonix and Home Free are the two groups that I have just discovered. I am an old Elvis Presley fan (60 years) and it is very very rare that I dig other performers. As they say, once and Elvis fan ALWAYS an Elvis fan....but there is room for excellent other groups/singers. I am listening and appreciating your reactions......Carole
A fun one to start! I get the sense of the “Big Band Era” with this song. The swingy, jazzy flavor of it. You’re right, they all do add so much personality & spice to their arrangements. Take one part away & it would fall flat. See you for day 2. PS: I love in the behind the scenes for this Matt complains to Kevin “I’m a bass I don’t remember lyrics!” 😂
You were having so much fun - it was great! Not only does Matt have a wonderful bass, but his crystal-clear enunciation at top speed is amazing, giving the lyrics a huge punch. Mitch's ad libs are so funny! The contrast with his high-fashion look here makes them even better. Yes, that's Kevin on the stick-rattle percussion, and indeed all the percussion effects. Kirstin and Mitch make a great brass section, and of course Scott is carrying the whole bass line because Matt is singing lead.
When this first came out it became my all-time favorite Christmas song. Normally I get bored to tears with all the Christmas stuff everywhere. But WOW Matt really banged this one out and made it all FUN again for me. Thanks for starting the month out with this one. You couldn't have chosen a better beginning.

This is one of my favorite covers of "Mr. Grinch". Matt has just a beautiful voice. There are a lot of people who can sing well. He can not only sing well, he has a truly "pretty" voice. I love his voice. And so much of his personality comes through in this piece.

My favorite comment I ever heard about PTX was that they don't cover songs, they upgrade them. Christmas music is how I found PTX, so welcome to the rabbit hole! It isn't technically a Christmas song, but Amazing Grace by PTX will make you believe in angel choirs.

The opacity is fine if it gives you a tension free post reaction result. Ideally a squidgeon more texture would be better if you can pull it, but this works. I love this jazzy version too - and it's sheer fun!
I’m sure you’ve probably planned all the songs for your 25 days of Christmas, but you really should do the Pentatonix version of “Making Christmas” from the movie “Nightmare before Christmas “. It switches back and forth from Christmas to Halloween and it’s INCREDIBLE!!! You will love it!!!

You've hit the nail on the head about Matt's bass! He definitely has that full, rich, "meaty", all-encompassing sound that you can feel reverberate through you. I've loved this song since my childhood, and this is my favorite version after the original.

The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci reaches notes that are beyond most people…you will be amazed. They are another A cappella group, and if you haven’t heard them yet…you really should!! My favorite Pentatonix Christmas song is one that they sang once and once only, while visiting Japan in 2014 or 15. It was called, "Christmas Eve," and was said to have been written by a famous song writer in Japan. What is SO cool is the amazing blending of a jazzy, blue notes on top of a fabulous European musical set. I don't know why they never sang it again, but you get to review it without distractions because it is NOT a PTX official song. Please go check it out. It is AMAZING!
I am such a big fan of Pentatonics. This is so cute but also fantastic. I have a request though. I know this is not the place to request this... to be disrespectful to Pentatonics is not my intention. Dimash did a Song ( Ikanaide/ Don't go) during the Tokyo Jazz festival 2021a few days ago. I would love a reaction from you. This is one of his top 3 performances for me. Pure sincere emotion. The song is about a Japanese actress that lived in China. The Chinese people adored her not knowing that she was Japanese. During the World war her true nationality was exposed so she was deported back to Japan. She was devastated.
