For someone with your musical knowledge, I think you would enjoy PENTATONIX THE RECORDING OF EVERGREEN. It shows them working together in the studio on their Grammy nominated Evergreen Album. (The Prayer is part of that album.)
I'd love to see you do this, but maybe listen to a few of the songs from the album first: you mentioned The Prayer. Also try Over the River (with Lindsey Stirling), and there's a good live version of I Saw Three Ships on the Late Show (there was no officia video for that).
If you want to hear Kevin play his cello (Beyonce), watch "Say something". You mentioned Scott using his hands to express himself, he is well known for that and in the Say something video, which gave the illusion of a portrait, Scott had to hold on the back of chairs so he wouldn't move his hands. But you could still see his arms moving sometimes. Kirsty had the lead and she was incredibly. Hope you put it on the play list, will be listening for it. Thanks for the reaction and analysis.
As you are probably a musical theater fan, you will appreciate My Favorite Things, and Waving Through a Window. Also, the Seasons of Love PTX did on PBS was so good, really showed what bad-ass Kirstie can be. Thank you for sharing this with me, as one of the Pentaholix, I’m always looking to see people react to the greatest vocal group in the world.
@@YourOnlineSingingCoach Here's my favorite completely live version. It was done at the Hollywood Bowl and the performance is spectacular. It was recorded for later broadcast so the production quality is peerless. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fcSkFppAFms.html
@@YourOnlineSingingCoachYou should check out their live performance of Hallelujah from their Christmas Special. It is stellar and Avi was the bass singer in that one. You will be able to see how Scott takes over the bass when Avi has his solo.
That overwhelming, full sound when they all sing forte is what we Pentaholics call their “Wall of Sound”. i’m guessing you’ll agree it’s an appropriate term. Enjoyed your reaction, out looking for more now 😊
Another nice little touch I noticed: Towards the end of Matt's solo, on the line "... that voices never shared...", he smoothly shifted from singing the melody (the Art Garfunkel part) into the harmony line (the Paul Simon part) to lead into that epic bass drop, with Mitch seamlessly picking up the melody line
@@panderson756 Since their voices can often sound similar, I just listened to that section on replay about 6 times to double check. it sounds to me that Mitch is singing the melody with Kirstie singing a high harmony that's very close to Mitch's part. Those two are absolute masters of tight, high harmonies.
I, too, geek out over the attention they gave to the lyrics, in arranging this song. Like how they echoed "but my words, words, words..." just before Kirsty sang "...and echoed in the wells of silence"
While Kevin doesn't play the cello often in their videos, it makes it even more impactful when he does. Here's some videos where Kevin plays the cello (not complete, just what I can think of offhand): Say Something (my favorite) Radioactive, Papaoutai, Over the River (all collaborations with Lindsey Stirling on violin) Shallow Dancing On My Own Thank You Perfect There are also videos on Kevin's own RU-vid channel (KO) - my favorite is his "Kover" of Down. And a recent video during their tour of Kevin's Fifth, where he gets to showcase his talents.
I've heard he's started looping some of the stomp pad sounds - still all him, but saving repetitive knee damage from stomping over & over & over. Totally understandable. 😊
When you watch their live videos, you will have yet an even higher level of respect for their talent. I can’t wait. PLEASE keep going with PTX. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks, again.
Just subscribed for more PTX. I am so excited to hear your breakdowns of their music. It's great when knowledgeable reactors find PTX and share their perspective. For live moments, there are so many out there, but one of my most favorite is the 2016 Popspring mini concert. They do 4 songs, 3 of them originals, so it shows not only how great they sound live, but also how talented they are as writers as well. And Pentaholics love watching the whole thing, so don't worry about the length. As mentioned, the Making of Evergreen is truly something you'll appreciate.
Great reaction! Love your analysis. 🥰 Already mentioned below for more Kevin cello are Say Something and Shallow, both great (of course)! Also, many of the members have solo work. You should check out Kevin's solo cover of Down. Amazing talent!!
Nothing against Kevin; he's both an incredible musician and one of the world's kindest people, and I adore him, but people don't realize how much Matt contributes to the richness of Kevin's percussion. With Avi it was easy - you ALWAYS noticed Avi's accompaniment - but Matt is more subtle than Avi; you don't notice that part of what you're hearing as drums is really Matt's bass. BTW, fun fact: Pentatonix goes to great lengths to protect their voices, for obvious reasons. One of the ways they do that is to drink lots of water. And guzzling water between songs is a really good way to also swallow air, leading to a need to burp. Kevin has said that it's very convenient for him that he's the beatboxer since he can just incorporate the burps into the percussion line. Kirstie gave him a dirty look.
So nice to see a reactor who has done her homework -- clearly identifying each singer. If you want to see a live performance check out their live version of hallelujah. That is also a visual display of how Scott takes over the base when Avi has a solo.
You'll get a lovely Mitch slap when you watch "The Prayer," but if you really want Mitch slaps I recommend"Bohemian Rhapsody"; it contains at least three of them. Also, you might want to check out SuperFruit. SuperFruit was a RU-vid vlog that Mitch and Scott posted to every week when they were living together, and for the most part it's a comedic gold mine. For something that's practically a reverse Mitch slap I recommend their "FROZEN MEDLEY (feat. Kirstie Maldonado)": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tA53EsnzlIg.html Be sure to stick around after the obvious end of the video for the blooper reel.
For superfruit: if you want to crack up - hip hop goes broadway 1&2, guy.exe, frozen medley. If you want to be blown away: feeling myself, Rise (with guest stars), empire medley, Beyoncé medley.
@@stephaniem2007 Especially "Rise," and be sure to read the description/dedication. "Rise" was SuperFruit's response to the Pulse nightclub massacre in 2016. All of the singers are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
This is and probably will be my favorite PTX song. I loved your analysis. As many times I've heard this performance, I never picked up on the little things you pointed out. Great Job!
The three Grammy winners Daft Punk is a showcase of Kevin's talent beatboxing, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a lesson in precision and finally Jolene with Dolly is just the humility and grace of these players. All three feature Avi on bass. Matt really shows off his lower register in You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch.
For sure. I often say that their magic is that on the surface their stuff is easily digestible for the general public (which helps them be mainstream) but under the hood it's all so complex if you know what to look for (which is what keeps all the music nerds hooked!)
Thanks for noticing the Falling phrase. I've been waiting years for a reviewer to catch that Gem. To see Kevin's cello chops, review their covers of Shallow and Say Something. Btw He beat boxes while playing. He calls it Cello Boxing.
OMG, I just found you this morning! I am so excited for you to continue discovering their perfection as artists!! You will love The prayer! I also would give my right arm to see you react to The Kevin Show - Kevin's 5th (Live) He beatboxes while playing the cello - he has his own channel - KO that will amaze you as well! Subbing for more Pentatonix! (Also you HAVE to check out the other 2 perfect a capella groups - Voiceplay and Home Free!!! You will thank me!!!) On the edge of my seat for your next reaction!!!
Kirstin Maldonado In February 2016, the a cappella group Voctave released the video "Disney Love Medley" which featured Kirstin Maldonado and her then-fiancé Jeremy Lewis. In the video, Maldonado and Lewis perform the songs " I See the Light " from Tangled , " You'll Be in My Heart " from Tarzan and " Go the Distance " from Hercules.
Just subscribed to watch more a capella reactions! PTX covered Imagine by John Lennon and it's absolutely beautiful. They create a wall of sound that's incredible. Another a capella group to check out is Voctave. They just released a cover of Somewhere from West Side Story that is amazing. Love your reactions!
A little bit of Matt's story. Hope I get this right. He saw PTX in high school with, I think, his choir group. Was a fan. Eventually, ended up at Berkeley School of Music in Boston. When Avi left, the story is that Matt learned all their bass parts for his audition. So he is now the youngest Pentatonix, instead of Mitch. He seems to be a really good fit. He has a great range, really soulful voice, and a beautiful smile. Check him out in The Grinch.
Run to you … is epic, Ive already enquiring my funeral song. Imagine , The Beatles cover When the party is over, Billie Eillish cover Gold , Kiara cover Daft Punk Medley Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Carol of the Bells the list goes on In Fact of the 200+ published songs there’s a huge repertoire to choose from
I always hone in on reactors that appreciate Kevin and his amazing talent! Christmas Tour 2022 Scott explained how they found Kevin for the show "The Sing-Off"... then gives Kevin the stage. RU-vid Kevin's 5th... find the 17+ minute video... it will be the most amazing thing to witness.
Scott is probably the most important and equally underrated member. Everybody loves Kirstie for her looks (I only say: „Can you feel the love tonight?“) or her insanely fast vibrato, or loves getting „Mitch-slapped“ or falls for Kevin‘s insane beat/ and cello boxing, but do not realize, that Scott is not only the „opening singer“ (in most cases), but also the most versatile of them all! He can take over the base, but also can go very high, almost as Mitch („Coffee in bed“)!
I'm sure somebody else already sent you this, but if you really want to get the full range of Matt's talent, watch "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch." He's lead and he knocks it completely out of the park. For his full bass, watch "New Rules/Are you that somebody."
Haha! „That chord“ („Sound..“) - I believe it’s a sus2 chord (but I‘m not entirely sure) The advantage, when you have 5 people singing different voicings!
Matt was a, uh ok, a fanboy of Pentatonix! He knew all the words to their songs…his first concert was even PTX! A fan whose wildest dream came true!!! And what an addition he is….
Boy, did the Pentaholics find a great reactor in you! Bring all the nerdiness and geekism you can muster, they also proudly claim the choir nerd label for themselves. Lovely, lovely reaction, so thanks. Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King is another example of how completely that can dominate an anthem, and someone else mentioned their Recording Evergreen mini-doc, which is a great behind-the-scenes look at a recent-ish Christmas album. They are notoriously hard workers, and that piece shows that. When you get a moment, please create a PTX playlist so we can keep current on recommendations. Peace …
Thank you for the great reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. They are amazing. Scott released a solo EP recently. It is really great. He has released videos for some of the songs: "Mars", "Parallel", "Four" and a visualizer for "King Kong". The rest of the songs do not have videos yet but the audios are on RU-vid. Kevin Olusola has his own RU-vid channel also. Please react to his Performance KOver for "Down".
I love their interpretation of this song. Simon and Garfunkle sang it in a light, warning tone. Disturbed had an ominous and angry tone. This one acknowledges the darkness, but sings with hope and passion. I don't think I've ever heard a reactor comment on Matt and Mitch switching out the last phrase of Matt's verse so Mitch could take the higher part. I enjoyed your reaction. Thanks.
I'd love to see you react to their evolution videos! They're done in all 1 take. They do it about 4 times and then pick the best one, and it's amazing! My favorite are the evolution of Ariana Grande, Rhianna and Michael Jackson ❤️
They each have beautiful, POWERFUL, multiple-octave-range voices. Even Kevin (beatboxer) has a beautiful tenor voice you haven't heard yet. You've gotten a taste of the famous "wall of sound" they produce. To be truly blown away by it try 'Imagine' or 'The Prayer' next. Love witnessing the excitement and joy in the birth of a new pentaholic! Welcome to our ranks. Sooo much to discover, anxiously awaiting your next reaction!
One thing I haven’t heard anyone comment on, among the reactors that I’ve seen, is the groups decision on where to place the “nd” of sound. I like it, but I must have been something they discussed. 💕🐝💕🎵
I'm loving your Pentatonix reactions! Pentatonix is my favorite group and your breakdown of what they're doing adds to my appreciation of them so much!!
On October 1, the premiere of a stunningly beautiful video for the song “Baikal” took place on Diana Ankudinova’s RU-vid channel. The soundtrack performed by Diana became the main musical theme of the film “The Spirit of Baikal,” which will be released in wide release on October 19, 2023. In the film itself, Diana voiced two roles - the spirit of Lake Baikal and the voice of the soul of the deceased mother of the main character of the film. The film received several top awards at film festivals.
5:56 Mitch has so much skill and understanding of his voice and vocal range, how he can switch between his head and chest voice with such ease.. but then with that, he has the most beautiful fix at times.
Probably 50 people have already talked to you about Scott's hands. He can't keep them still! We Pentaholics love watching Scott's gestures. I'd like to recommend two songs that, in the first place, are incredibly beautiful. But in the second place, they're notable because Scott--poor boy!--was obliged to keep his hands still because the climate of the video demanded it. Can he do it? Can Scott keep his hands still? For how long? Check out "Say Something" and "Can't Help Falling (in Love with You)"
I just found you from the Christmas PTX reactions and am going back to your prior stuff. First, I love your hair! Second, you really need to watch Popspring 2016. It is a live 4 song set recorded by MTV in Japan with 3 original songs. For more live/one take stuff, do the “evolution of xxx” videos- it’s a one take all the way through in the a studio (they did do those on tour live as well, but the studio ones have better volume and you can watch them all. Most start with evolution of music followed by Beyoncé, Rhianna, and Ariana Grande. For other originals where you should watch the music video: Sing, Love Again, Run To You, Happy Now, Love Me When I Don’t (this one was live on the Kelly Clarkson show during the pandemic but then their editors had at it). Let me know if you want more! lol.
You need to react to Imagine as well. You will be 🤯. Ohhh and all of their christmas bangers. Please santa please is their latest orginal christmas bop.
Loving your reactions. I am a huge Pentaholic and I go where ever they are being reacted to. Having heard 99.9% of their music, my 2nd most favorite thing is watching a true music lover listen to them for the first time. Some really good cello songs are Say Something, Shallow, Radioactive ft Lindsey Sterling, and Scott's original Christmas song Thank You released in 2020 during the Pandemic. Beautiful song.
Since you are raving about Scott's voice in this video, as is warranted and you should, I think you will be interested in this bit of trivia. Before Pentatonix, Scott tried to get on the popular competition show "American Idol." To demonstrate how irrelevant those shows really are in recognizing good talent, Scott was rejected three times. Also, if you really want an idea of how high Mitch can really sing, you have to view "The Prayer," in which he and Scott sing the lead. Love your reviews; keep them coming.
Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody and Amazing Grace are some I’d recommend, but everything they do is awesome. Try their Evolution of Music, Evolution of Michael Jackson, and Evolution of Rihanna are all must see. Then if you want some of their original music “Sing” and “Can’t Sleep Love” so good.
Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! We are here for it to accompany you with your discovery! And by the way: I have seen many reactions to PTX SoS so far - but nobody has yet pointed out the falling line at „fell“! I love it when people discover new aspects and am looking forward to your forthcoming PTX reactions!
I think the light represents moonlight instead of sunlight. I have listened to this song for over 40 years. My take is that the song is about dream sequences. The tonal qualities of their voices are incredible. Pentatonix will not release a song that they cannot perform live with the same perfection. I would suggest checking out another a cappella group, Home Free. They add a little bit of a country flair to their music. My recommendation is to start with their version of Seven Bridges Road, the a cappella song sung by the Eagles many years ago.
Matt has a degree from Berklee College of Music and I think he focused his training on pop / musical theater. Like the "trio" (Kirstie, Mitch and Scott) he did children's theater when he was young and his father was a music pastor. Unlike the other PTX members, he is a naturally confident performer on stage.
BTW, this video was shot by Ben Hausdorff, Kirstin's partner and now her fiance, as well as the father of her daughter Elliana. He also shot the Recording of Evergreen documentary that's mentioned elsehwere in the comments. (Also, subscribing for more Pentatonix.)
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and enthusiasm to this performance. I love listening to the reaction of professional singers because it allows me to appreciate what PTX does, even more. You can't go wrong with anything they do so I'll make my recommendation to listen to their 3 Grammy winning covers. Daft Punk, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy & Jolene.
Growing up, Simon and Garfunkel were a favorite; I had all their albums. This Pentatonix version of "Sound of Silence" has some elements of the Disturbed version, which was popular the year before they did this, but I think the arpeggiated bell tones between the verses are a tribute to the ringing guitars of the S&G original.
