This is probably my favorite performance by Kirstin. Very breathtaking. Check out the original video here and subscribe to their channel: • Pentatonix - The Sound...
Did you notice that Scott took the baseline for Matt when he was singing lead? Scott has an amazing range. He also covers baseline for Avi in Hallelujah. Kirsten also has a fabulous lower range. You can hear it well in their version of Shallow. Great reaction!
Avi left PTX in 2017 and Matt replaced him as bass. All the members of PTX have and still are writing their own songs, collaborating with other members and preforming separately. Their are no egos within PTX which is why there is always so much energy in their performances. Both Avi and Matt have brought unique influences to PTX.
You should try Shallow, Say Something, Can You Feel The Love Tonight and Seasons of Love for great Kirstie singing. Also, Havana, and Come Along are kind of cool.
Kirstie has an acoustic version of her song Break a Little that is gorgeous. I hate to say that I don't like something she did, but the pop version just didn't do it for me. Then I heard the acoustic version, and it is hauntingly beautiful.
S&G wrote and recorded the song, but PTX now owns it. Kevin actually uses the stomp on stage to augment the sound of the percussion. Thank you for getting Kirs-ten’s name right. I hear and see commenters say it wrong and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. She is a star and deserves better.
"Sounds of Silence" was released in February of 2019 and "90's Dance Medley" was released April 0f 2021, FYI. Scott sings small bass parts when the bass (Avi or Matt) have solos. KIrstie is a mezzo soprano, which is a full and can be low voice. A lot of people also talk about this song as being a somber song, but the way PTX sings it reminds me of a plea. It's like "Hear us! We are telling you something important! Wake up to what is happening in the world!"
The new bass is Matt Sallee and has a music degree from Berklee College of Music. Not sure how his range compares to Avi's but he seems to have trained to develop his baritone range where Avi developed his low bass. Avi left after the end of Pentatonix's 2016-17 tour and they did some recordings and videos with four singers, then brought Matt in on a trial basis to record some tracks for their 2017 Christmas album and do the 2017 Christmas tour. I wonder how much time he had to learn all of Avi's parts for the tour repertoire.
According to the band, Matt came to his first audition knowing every single bass line in PTX's recordings. He was a massive fan before he was a member!
Great reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Thank you. They are amazing. They cover a lot of different genres and have songs/videos for every mood. Please react to Pentatonix "Mad World", "Can't Hold Us", "Havana", "Amazing Grace", "Come Along", "Evolution Of "Rihanna and "Butter x Dynamite". They are all different styles and I love how they did each.
Avi is doing great as is his solo work. Yes, please check out his new LP entitled Floating on a Dream. Every track is brilliant and amazing. I especially love the track He don't treat you Right. A natural born storyteller and that voice...soulful buttery chocolate. He and his music are relatable. Hope you will react to him more. This was a super reaction. Really enjoyed your breakdown. Thanks!
If you regularly look at Kevin while he's beatboxing you'll see that when he isn't actually using his hands to say, clap, or pound on his chest or something, they're actually holding imaginary drumsticks and are off beating on imaginary drums, or cymbals, or whatever. Cool to watch.
The song isn't inherently low. In all recorded and released versions of the Simon & Garfunkel original (there are at least three studio versions), Since sings in normal male midrange and Garfunkel supplies high harmony / counterpoint. In the Disturbed cover (both the studio and live TV versions), Draiman sings the first two verses low, then jumps up an octave.
I've heard some speculation that Scott starts off singing low because of the Disturbed version, but when he comes back in for the final verse, he's back in his more normal range.
Scott Hoying is a natural baritone (though it’s a rare and welcome surprise when we get to hear it). He has an awesome range, can and does sing bass to tenor as needed.
So, when Pentatonix arranges a song, they do a bunch of research on that song. I bet they’ve heard at least 5 variations of this song, and picked out some of the best pieces to put together, with their own flavor. After all, their nods to Walk Off The Earth (WOTE) in “Somebody That I Used to Know” were, to quote Ben Folds, “Bitchin’.” That also includes the screen shakes from WOTE’s version of “I Knew You Were Trouble,” which means they did research on the groups who covered the song, and not just covers of the song. Avi’s “Beard Guy” hat (RIP, Mike), and Mitch’s mannerisms and vocal stylings definitely point to their Gotye “cover,” “5 People 1 Guitar!” (Or as the thumbnail called it, “5 PEEPS 1 GUITAR.”) So any other versions of any songs they’ve done likely have snippets or vibes from that song’s history, like the poetic, upbeat (Thanksgiving) vibes from “Over the River,” or the Disneyesque key changes added to a previously key-change-free Disney song (Can You Feel the Love Tonight). Even the actual film clips from the original Wizard of Oz, showing defining moments of the original actors who played the characters currently singing near the end of “Wizard of Ahhhs.” And they originally got the idea to make all these songs better by incorporating other artists’ versions to the original from Shawn Stockman, on the Sing-Off, when he said, “I’m still a performer, so when I hear y’all doing stuff like that [impressive musical nuances], I’m like this [takes notes of what to copy], on the low.” They paid him tribute in their next performance, adding a well-placed Motown Philly “Mmm-DA-Da,” to a Britney Spears Medley.
I recommend checking out their version of John Lennon's Imagine next. Mostly because I feel like it is the right song for the time, but an amazing arrangement as well. I've really enjoyed your reactions!
You should really check out all of their performances from The Sing Off. They were so young and you can see how good they were and how far they have come since then.
Kevin, to me, is by far the most versatile of the group. They're all fantastic and have large ranges, but Kevin is percussion, sound effects, can shake your bones with his lower octaves and can sweeten anyone's heart with his angelic higher notes. Seriously talented. Also on a side note, I came here for the Pentatonix reaction because I love them but I love your zip-up, my guy. Plus ultra way to represent UA. 🤙🏼

I'm old so I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. But most people today know this song from Disturbed's version, particularly a viral live performance on a late-night TV program. This seems to be mostly based on the Disturbed version, but they somehow inject a feeling of hope into what Disturbed made a really bleak song.
The original Sound of Silence is by Simon and Garfunkel. It is a folk song in a much higher range. It made you think. Disturbed redid it as a much deeper, much more passionate song. It made you feel.
I can't remember if I commented yet on your videos but I basically found your PTX videos with your latest reaction to The Prayer. I immediately went back to your first video and I've been slowly making my way through them. I really appreciate your insight into their songs and voices & I'm really looking forward to seeing you do more. As others have said, Seasons of Love is a great one for Kirstin as is Rather Be. I don't think you've seen Kevin play the cello yet so reacting to Shallow would be great to see him cellobox and hear Kiristin with a great solo. It really showcases her vibrato.
Yes they eon the sing off. A record contract and $200 grand. A week after they moved to LA, the record company dropped them. They took the money and started making youtube videos and the rest is history. Unbelievable what incredible talent and a massive amount of drive and ambition can get you. I recently looked up the net worth of rhe group as a whole, is $80 million. Pretty good for a little group from Texas.
If you want to hear where The harmonize and you hear different Increases of the voices Try listen to amazing grace my chains are gone that song always makes me cry when I hear them and also hear can you feel the love tonight
I think the entrance was in response to Disturbed's version of this son, where he starts low and builds higher (excellent video to check out if you haven't)
Even though there's so many in the band when they sing together you can hear each individual voice as a pose to when you sing in a group your voice get dround out
I remember when they first released this... it was the first video with Matt as bass, and I wasn't disappointed. It's up there with my favourite PTX tunes.
Rob,if you want to see Kristian really show what she can do, view “The Wizard of Ahhhs” featuring Todrick Hall. It is amazing. Todrick Hall put this together and it is awesome.
(React to EVERYTHING on their channel . . it’s an entire rabbit hole of material past and present. They were amazing when they started and have only gotten better as they have worked more. .. 2021: “Christmas Under the Stars” to see their work LIVE Hallelujah Daft Punk Medley 90’s Dance Medley ALL Christmas (fun ones: Mr. Grinch, All My Favorite Things, 12 Days Xmas) Imagine Say Something Sing! (Original) Be My Eyes (Original) Mad World Happy Now (Original) The Prayer Sound of Silence Can’t Hold Us Amazing Grace Mary Did You Know? Are You That Somebody…. Come Along Havanna Coffee In Bed (Original) Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody Little Drummer Boy Notes: Original Bass: Avi Kaplan (People say he looks like Jesus) - Lett the group for family reasons & helped them find a replacement in Matt Sallee. When Matt has a verse, Scott (blonde) will step in on Bass. He has an insane register Mitch: He’s a chameleon in both clothes and hair with an amazing voice and crazy range. Kirstin: Only Female, amazing voice and strength Kevin: Beatboxer & Singer - He’s amazing ** EVERYTHING they do sounds the same LIVE. Their philosophy is that if they can’t perform it live and sound the same, they won’t cover or make the song. Scott, Mitch, Kirsten are all from Arlington, TX (DFW Area) and went to school together
If you haven't listened to the ORIGINAL original, please listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version. Paul Simon wrote this song in 1964, so you're listening to a song that 58 years old.
Find the video from them of Aha then find the live performance from Singapore. Sounds iffy, as it was recorded by a guy on his phone. The phone isn’t up too the notes that are hit. But find them both. Blow your mind. 🙏❤️🇬🇧
A song where Kirstin really shines in my opinion is "Seasons of Love", if you want to check that out definitely watch their live performance of it (Because there is no official music video for it, but the performance was recorded like a music video and has the audio qualities of it) !!!!
Thanks for your great reaction!! When you get a chance you should check out Wizard of Ahhhs. Toddrick Hall is in it also, I think you would really enjoy it. You should also check Gold, it’s amazing
No, 90's Dance mix was April 2021, Mitch had lost his mullet and Kirstie had a short blonde cut. Sound of Silence was released 2 years earlier in 2019.
You should listen to Disturbed sing The Sound of Silence - both the official video and the live version on the Conan show. They did it before Pentatonix and perhaps their version is where the deeper, darker versions have come from.
Matt replaced Avi & like the rest of them, he has amazing range as well. Kevin is the beat boxer, also has a great voice. I love him in 'Mary did you know'. Scott started the song & Mitch is the chameleon with different looks like Kirstin & shockingly good voices.
The earliest video where Kirstie finally took the lead and showed what she could do (stepping out of her comfort zone to do it) was in _Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix),_ which you can find here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QkVeKb2igrg.html It's glorious, but if you've never actuallly seen _The Wizard of Oz,_ starring Judy Garland, watch that first; without it _The Wizard of Ahhhs_ won't make much sense.
You're correct; the original was not that low. It was a duet and they stayed within a certain range. With 5 or more you get a lot more 'playing around' with the arrangement to allow each one to shine.
Isn't it fascinating that Matt, their bass, sings his verse an octave HIGHER than where Scott, the baritone, sang it? They are a very talented and versatile bunch
You should also listen to the version by Disturbed, but make sure you watch their official video, because the video really adds to how they interpret their cover of that song.
If you haven't already, you have to listen to the cover of this same song by a heavy metal band called Disturbed. Now, I know what you are thinking, it's only viewed 822 million times - yeah, no joke. It's an incredible cover - and would be a fun reaction after the Pentatonix version. Here is the link to the video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u9Dg-g7t2l4.html . There is also a terrific live version recorded on the Conan O'Brian show - but that's only been viewed 132 million times. Pick your poison and enjoy.
Scientists use carbon dating. Pentaholics use Mitch dating to determine when a video was recorded. Between his and Kirstie's looks, you can narrow it down pretty precisely.
hi i think you will enjoy this video cant hold us by the cover macklemore and ryan lewis with scitt abd mich rapping its a older video wth avi in it check out thanks
