What a huge difference in shots when some actually knows how to use this camera, compared to so many youtubers who had so many blurry shots. You nailed so many shots and it shows what your talking about . Thanx for the video.

Olympus (Pen-FT) was the first, I believe, to offer a 1/2 frame film camera back in the 60s. I have no idea what happened to that camera, but it's the one I miss the most when I think of my early photography days, This is a very interesting offering from Pentax.

I have quite a few pen f's. You can still buy them for much much cheaper than this plastic camera. And they have better lenses/focus systems. $500 is crazy for this

The Pen f wasn't the first half frame camera. It was almost the last. It sold for a half dozen years, after which the fairly limited market for it was exhausted and sales fell off. It had the advantage of SLR concept. It had the failings of a lack of TTL meters, which was added as a patchwork after the first model, but never worked that well. Also the TTL metering made the finder as dim as any ever produced. I bought an FT (TTL metering) with several lenses based on reputation. I used it on one weekend fishing trip, then sold the whole kit the following month. No regret of that at all.

No, and the 3-element 25mm fixed on the 17 is probably going to be a drag once people pull their head out of their ass and just look at the camera design and specs. There were a number of half frame cameras made in the 1970s and 80s which have better features, lenses, and overall performance. Even adjusted for inflation, they cost less than the 17, and used, they are a fraction of the 17 now. If you want to shoot half frame 35mm, the only argument in favor of the 17 I've seen so far is that it's new and has a warranty. On all other issues, it's second banana at best. It may have "Pentax" stamped on the camera, but it's odd design and marketing stick of its master, Ricoh.

I already passed that time, I started in 1989 with negative and medium format, and I really wouldn't use negative again, this is an attempt but I don't think it's something that someone who does weddings or commercials wants to use today, the Digital passed the quality of the negative a long time ago, but I wish you good luck Pentax 17

A lot of the best wedding photographers still use film. I found a wedding photo from my aunt's wedding from 1955. The image quality was superb and still better than any current digital camera image. I did a test a few years back where I shot a wedding and used a film camera for one image and took the same image with a digital camera (same lens used on both cameras). The film image was absolutely beautiful. It took about an hour with Lightroom to get the image from the digital camera to look like the film image, but the film image was still better. Film requires you to be at the top of your game, digital lets you be sloppy and you still can get an acceptable image.

@@FelixCervantes Sorry that it differs from what you are saying Digital far surpassed the quality of the negative a long time ago, the first digital cameras were bad but now they far surpassed the negative, I tell you, I used both versions, I started in 1989 with medium format and Now I have the GFX 100 and believe me the quality that this medium format Fuji camera gives, the negative never comes close to this, so it is not bad to remember or that you like it but in the marketing sense it is difficult for this to come back, and that is reality

How many compact cameras do you know that have an exposure compensation dial, a prime lens, metal top and bottom and cost less than $500 new or in mint condition? That's what this camera represents, comparing it with the stinky K1000 from a dying smoker grandpa that a russian scammer is selling on eBay is pointless

Thank God I still have all my film cameras from the 90s and I still shoot with them. $500 for this? And it only shoots half frame? This makes no sense. I know film has gotten stupid expensive but why shoot half frames? Thank God I kept my three Minoltas and my Canon film cameras. Things are just getting worse and worse.

$500 is brand new retail. It will likely come down significantly in the next year. They have to recover R&D cost while having enough capital to (hopefully) fund the NEXT analog camera in the line. I bet later adopters will buy this new on sale for $350-400 by November/December.

It's a mystery to me why people still want to start this. I'm old enough to have grown up with film cameras and even studied photography using a Pentax 35mm camera in the 70's and 80's. I'm not going to list all the disadvantages of analog here but digital is much better in most respects against a much lower price. Especially if you take more photos than just an occasional snapshot. Is it the fact that people no longer know it and think they find something unique? I'll reveal a secret: there's little unique about it, it's a lot of hassle for a lot of money.
@gangganggang2219
@gangganggang2219 Месяц назад
For me it's the beauty of the colors. For digital you have to try to recreate the colors in Lightroom as they were when you took the photo. Film just does the colors perfectly automatically. I also love the film grain as compared to digital noise. Buying an old film camera can be much cheaper than a good digital camera, but the pricing evens out if you shoot and develop enough film on it, but at least it's not $800+ all at once. Also every shot counting helps me to focus on taking interesting photos and not just mashing the shutter button like I do on digital. I'll use my phone to document events and locations, but a film camera is for really engaging with and appreciating the environment and people I am with.

It's a common trend that older generations that started on film prefer digital. Inversely generations like mine that were raised in a digital throw away economy prefer a slower more methodical process. Plus it's retro I guess.
