In this video I'm discussing the Pentax 67: what I like about the system and some ways you can modify how you use it to better fit your shooting style and comfort. I also talk about the fantastic Pentax 105mm f/2.4 and share some samples taken with it. And keep an eye out for a 240fps sample of that famous mirror slap...
** Clarification on the TTL Meter / Lens Linkage process from
www.pentaxforums.com/forums/5...
The lens can be removed and re-mounted freely any time a TTL-meter prism is seated,
however, if the TTL-meter prism is removed or jarred loose:
1. Remove the lens;
2. Re-mount the TTL-prism, and then-
3. Re-mount the lens.

Very good overview, thanks. Just got myself one a couple of weeks ago and only made a couple of tests shots so far, but it draws beautifully. I am normally a nikon 35 shooter, but I have also a pentax 645, which is very good, but this is clearly a real jewel of photography. I bought everything (body, lenses, grip) on ebay from Japan, beware, it comes with hefty customs when you are in Europe, like 30 pc on top of the buying price.

I absolutely love my 6x7. I dont have hundreds of rolls through it, but many. And the quality and of pics and ease of use make it a dream. Last week I had a mishap and it fell off the tripod. Getting it repaired for a couple hundred (AND finding parts) makes it worth the repair costs. They are getting harder to find in good condition and will bring years of quality photography. Be safe.

Nice overview, Rob. I have 2 of the non-MLU bodies with 4 lenses including the 105mm f2.4 lens. I just recently had both bodies and meters completely rebuilt by a 6x7 expert. I keep one body loaded with color and the other body loaded with B&W. Regarding the mirror slap, I've found that it really only effects handheld shots made a 1/15 to 1 sec. Shots on a tripod or slower than 1 sec are fine. BTW, since I shoot mainly landscapes I usually shoot in the sweet spot of f8 and f11. F2.4 only if I want to accentuate a subject with a blurred foreground and background.

Nice job with the overview. I use the 90 leaf shutter and 165 LS for most of my studio work and I add the 45 for landscapes and for rock steady shots there is no substitute for a tripod and MLU. I seldom shoot negs it's almost always chromes, even my black and whites are converted. It is true that the in camera meter is good but I'm old school and I still meter incident and 1degree spot, you have to be right on with chromes.

You say everyone is talking about 105mm and you're right! I just really wonder why. I've had both the 105mm and 90mm at the same time, used both a lot and don't understand why the 105mm is so strongly and consistently preferred. There is something important here that I have not understood. So far, I say that the 90mm is sharper at fully open aperture. It has less coma into bright objects in the image, it is more linear with less distortion, it has less chromatic/purple color abberasion and with less flare and ghosting. I think almost all important criteria for evaluating the quality of a photographic lens speak in favor of the smaller, lighter and more modern 90mm f:2.8. In any case, I can tell everyone that shallow depth of field, 3D pop and bokeh from the 90mm fully open can really impress! Before I get this, it must be the old-fashioned classic look from the 105mm lens that can explain the apparently overrated status and hype. Perhaps portrait photography profiles the less perfect rendering. Let me understand - I'm listening!
@RobZeigler
@RobZeigler Год назад
No, you're right - lens choice is never something that can be 100% justified because it's such a personal decision. Everyone has their own tastes. I think the 105mm earns its reputation because it was considered the "normal" lens for the 6x7 and is also juuuust slightly faster to make it "unique". Often times lenses with character overshadow lenses with superior optical qualities. Both lenses are undoubtedly great!

Contra to another of those YT urban legends, I too find the metered prism to be very accurate. It by chance yours is really "off", then its takes a "while you wait" repair calibration at a decent shop. Those who gripe about its accuracy probably don't know how to use it. The meter reads the full screen (as viewed) evenly, whereas most users are expecting the center weighted metering pattern found on nearly all 35mm and MF SLRs and digitals. Center weighting the meter was done to compensate for users' failure to use TTL meters properly when first introduced decades ago. They down weight the exposure influence of the open skies which under exposed so many vacation pictures. With the 67 meter, you have to look at the view finder image and think about what the meter is reading, or you buy a 67II body and AE meter, and let the meter do your thinking for you.

how do you usually meter your Pentax 67? I am looking to get one but I'm afraid of the metered prisms "inaccuracy"
@therealchickentender
@therealchickentender 3 года назад
I hear your barking about the left-grip, but I still hate it. It was the first thing I culled from my setup 6 or 7 years ago. Next went the metered prism for the non-metered version, shaving even more (a surprising amount) weight. (This also prompted me to remove the chain and linkage so I don't to worry about quick lens swaps any longer.) I shoot my 67 for landscape and a 67ii for everything else though, so the grip and metered prism aren't missed in that capacity. But anyhow, blah blah blah. :) Agree with most everything you covered here. It's a legend for a reason. Re: the 105, yeah it's magic. But I honestly use the 90/2.8 more. It's half the size and 95% of the look, with a little more breathing room. It doesn't get enough love out there.

Hey buddy. Great video. I see @grainydays uses the official left hand grip for portrait orientation also.... and he also has the focus lever attached to his 105mm. The simplicity of this combo is just crazy!!!!! So im defo for the LH Grip in conjunction with focus lever/handle
@RobZeigler
@RobZeigler 3 года назад
The lever / grip combo really is a pleasure to use. The weight of the camera falls very naturally on your hand. Enjoy it!
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 3 года назад
Simplicity and convenience re the focus rings mostly depends on how you use them. I agree that the left hand grip is much under-rated, as it is perfectly balanced for the body with many of the lenses and is a very comfortable carry point. As to the focus rings, they can be a convenience in limited usage with the shorter lenses. However, they come in pieces which you use in various combos depending on the lens, and there are two sets if you want full coverage. Moreover, they are a real nuisance to change from lens to lens. So, if you use mainly one lens and have the rings set up for it, great. Otherwise, they are nearly useless until you loose a part, then they are totally useless. .

I love my Pentax 67 and the two lenses I have. The 55mm and the 165mm f 2.8. I too have heard all about the 105mm f 2.4 as a great lens and I'm sure it is. But do you know of any comparisons between it and the 165mm f 2.8? Is it that much better or are they both great lenses? I ask because I have the 165 and don't know that I need the much more expensive 105, based purely on the image IQ both lenses produce.
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 3 года назад
Keep what you have. The 105mm used to sell used for $120 all over the place. It's price has been run up by incredible (unwarranted) hype in social media. Purely on performance, it is a good lens, if not at its widest apertures. It's been around since the camera was introduced more than 50 years ago without an update except focus ring grip covering. The later 90mm 2.8 (not the LS model) is a better performer. The late model 100mm 4.0 is by far the best of the bunch, and priced accordingly. All that said, worrying about lens quality in medium format is a waste of time if you aren't printing your images in sizes over 11x14 inches. Scanned to put in social media, you could use an old Coke bottle just as well. The 165mm 2.8 replaced the earlier 150mm 2.8. At comparable apertures, it's probably a bit sharper than the 105mm, but not so much as you'd notice it apart from a resolution test chart. The last two versions of the 55mm 4.0 are certainly two of the best lenses in the Pentax 67 system; the early 55mm 3.5, not so much.

I have a question about the PENTAX 67 Rob. I have the 105, 55 and 75 all SMC pentax. For some reason, with the 105 and the 75, when I stop down the aperture in manual mode, it also stops down the lens. So if my lens is at 22, I can't even see what I'm trying to get in focus because it's too dark. The only lens that doesn't stop down is the 55 - I can see a bright screen at all apertures. Do you know why this happens to the 105 and 75 but not the 55? i have to focus wide open and then fix my fstop its pretty annoying. Do you have this issue or is my copy defective? the viewfinder is only bright in all apertures if i ahve the lens in automatic mode once i switch to anything lower than f11 i basically cant see anything in the viewfinder its wayyy too dark.

I am under the impression that 5:18 all of the 6 by 7 or 67 or 67 MLU or 67II cameras should have the lenses switched to “AUTOMATIC” and not “MANUAL”. This should produce a bright view all the time. Maybe you know this ? This switch is on the side of every lens. Thank you. RS. Canada

@RobZeigler
@RobZeigler 4 года назад
Hi Arnold. First - a silly question, is the lens cap removed and have you flicked the TTL metered prism to the ON position? If you set it to your widest aperture and a slow shutter speed do you see needle movement when pointing at a very bright object? Are you able to dry fire the shutter with the process I talk about in the video with that new battery?
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 4 года назад
Comments: 1. Agree that the left hand grip is far more useful than the many negative comments would suggest. If nothing else, it's perfect just to carry the camera around. 2. 105mm lens. I own most lenses frm the 35mm fisheye through the 400mm EDIF. I do not own the 105mm, and a do not understand why folks make a fuss over it. It was introduced with the system in 1968, and was never updated, so its 50 year old design. It's reasonably sharp, but not so much wide open. At the same apertures, the 90mm 2.8 (Not the LS) blows it away. The newest 100mm 4.0, even more so. In 1968, it was a marketing tool as much as anything: "We got the fastest..." A nice first generation lens, but not some miracle of lens making. 3. He remarks concerning the removal and mounting of the metered prism are dead wrong, which he shares with a number of others. The meter/lens linkage does require care, but it's not in the prism removal as stated. It's in the mounting. The lens must be removed before the metered prism is installed on the body, then the lens is attached. You can leave the lens on if you remove the meter/prism and then attach any other finder to the body. So, the basic rule is: If you want to mount a metered prism, there can be no lens on the camera. That all there is to it.

It would seem this kit is over spec'd for the sample images . Not only IQ wise but total cost per frame including the 3-4 dollars for film and processing and the time spent scanning, manually removing the dust/artifacts , retouching and any tweaking of adjustable image characteristics.
@RobZeigler
@RobZeigler 3 года назад
Not going to lie - I'm not sure where you're going with that but I wouldn't judge this (or any) camera based on a few samples in a RU-vid video. I learned a long time ago that money is too subjective when it comes to analyzing what something may be worth to someone else. $3-$4 may be pennies to someone who desires the Pentax 67 shooting experience and enjoys spending the time developing and scanning their work to share. To each his / her own.
@denniswilliams4789
@denniswilliams4789 3 года назад
A 54mm equivalent lens in 35 format ( +/- 7, depending on who is defining) is not particularly useful for head , head and shoulders or even ¾ shots of people and f2.4 is far too shallow - at f 5.6 you cannot fit nose to ears. Ears will be OOF. From a landscape or casual street perspective perhaps everyone is shooting 35mm format with a 50mm lens shot wide open, so the 67 with the 105 makes sense -I am not a street guy- but I believe the idea of f2.4 on a MF67 lens is far more "fantastic" than the functional usage for a great deal of content with the alternatives available. Most of my work is shot with a pair of 135mm lenses which, depending on who is you are listening to, equates to 70, 77 or 85MM in 35mm format . f5.6 is my go to aperture for fashion.
@RobZeigler
@RobZeigler 3 года назад
The 105mm at 2.4 is nice, but I usually live somewhere in the range of f/5.6 to f/8 for street photography with 35mm. f/11 sometimes as well.

Remove the lens before removing the prism to avoid breaking this chain. Then put the prism back on before you put the lens back on. Check an expert to be certain of not breaking this chain that is NOT in all of these Pentax medium format cameras ( for example : the 67ii has no chain )

The whole coupled chain thing makes me feel uneasy about buying one on ebay. What are the chances some giant ebay seller that handles 200 products every week and takes some quick photos of the body with and without lens, doesn't know about this weak spot and (almost) breaks the chain, leaving you an overpriced camera. Pretty high, I think. It's a lottery.

It's not an expensive fix and You can still use the camera anyway.
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 3 года назад
I have two of the 6x7 models effected by this issue, and I've never run into the problem, or anyone else who has, so it's not that common to start with. Also, note that he got it wrong. It's not a matter of not taking the lens off before removing the prism. What you do NOT do is have a lens mounted when you install the metered prism. You have the lens off when you attach the metered prism to the top of the body, then you mount the lens so it connects to the meter linkage. If you leave the metered prism on your body, you can change lenses all day. If you use any other viewfinder, you can do whatever you like. It always helps to read the manual before preparing your "how to" video, doesn't it?
